Hello list. Not too long ago we had a great discussion on Benjamin Pearson and his first and second wives, Agatha Brooks and Margaret Evans of Bush River. I am wanting to get in touch with the Lady that provided so mauch helpful information. The name evades me but I am thinking it might have been Vivian who posts on this list a good deal. The reason is on another list this topic has come up and I was hopeing I might be able to pass on some good information to the other list. Below is a copy of the post: Dear Friends, I was told a long time ago that my Benjamin PEARSON (1722-1788) was first married to Agatha BROOKS, daughter of Jacob BROOKS, but I have never seen documentation of those facts. It would be very nice if all of us who descend from that union could nail it down. And while we are at it, what about the parentage of Margaret EVANS, Benjamin's 2nd wife and the ancestress of a lot more of us? Do any of you have documentation about that marriage? There was another EVANS named Joseph who married Esther BUFFINGTON. What do you know about him and his family? Jacob BROOKS took up land in the Bush River SC area before 1760 according to the SC Plat Books. During the Cherokee Wars (c1759-62) a fort was built on his land and he was commissioned to command it. Owning adjacent land was Benjamin PEARSON, whom I believe to have been Jacob's son-in-law. It appears that Benjamin's first wife was Agatha BROOKS, who died at about that time. Does anyone know what (if any) was the relationship between Jacob and Agatha BROOKS? The BROOKS family eludes me. I am also looking for information on the Joseph EVANS family who lived in the area as well. Please help me if you can. Desparately seeking Agatha, Paul and another post: Dear Friends, I have seen it asserted in many places, many times, by many people that Jacob PEARSON, son of Benjamin and Agatha BROOKS PEARSON, died as a prisoner of war during the War of the Revolution (1775-1783). Does anyone have any documentation regarding that allegation? Which side was Jacob on? He had a brother-in-law (Moses Buffington) who died on the British side. Moses in turn had three brothers, two who died and another who enlisted and deserted on the British side. Moses' sister Esther married a Joseph EVANS. Benjamin PEARSON's 2nd wife was Margaret EVANS. There was also a Robert EVANS and a John EVANS who lived at Bush River at the same time. Does anyone have documentation on these EVANS families ~ possibly all one family? I have the data on Rob't EVANS and some land records for all three of the EVANS men I named, but I don't know where the family came from or what the connections are. Author of THE ANNALS OF NEWBERRY says Rob't came from Camden. Agatha BROOKS, Benjamin PEARSON's 1st wife, is consistently named as a daughter of Jacob BROOKS. I have land records and some mention in the history of the Cherokee War (1759-1763) clearly establishing that Jacob was at Bush Eiver at that time and that Benjamin PEARSON owned land adjacent to his. Agatha would have died at the time of the Cherokee War, and Benjamin would have married Margaret EVANS before it was over. MORE QUESTIONS! Can anyone prove Agatha was the daughter of Jacob BROOKS or when and where she was born? Anyone have a record of her marriage? Can anyone prove who was the father of Margaret EVANS or when and where she was born or point to a record of her marriage? A lot of information about Benjamin and his family which shows up in many people's databases is certainly based on Geo. M. Pearson's book, BENJAMIN and ESTHER (FURNAS) PEARSON, etc., but much of his material just doesn't fit with what we can document from official records. This is despite the fact that he (GMP) claims on p. 29, in reference to the Ben. Pearson who married Agatha Brooks, not the one in the title of his book, that "The record of Benjamin's family was copied from his family Bible, which Eli Jay found in the home of Benjamin's grand-daughter." Did he lie? Was he mistaken? Was the bible record bogus? I think Geo. M. Pearson might also have originated the notion that the Hannah BUFFINGTON who married Enoch 'the Blacksmith' PEARSON had been married to a person named EVANS previously. Has anyone ever seen any evidence that was the case? I think it's bunk, one of GMP's mistakes that others have simply repeated. If I'm wrong, please point me to the evidence. I am seriously begging to be corrected! Paul How about some good discussion from this list to pass on? Thank you! Steve Pearson
Will of Jacob Brooks, SC Will Book TT 1774-1778, p. 54: Jacob Brooks, his mark, Craven County, planter. Wife: Rosana, use of my plantation where I now live during her life. Children: Jacob, John and William Garry [sic: Gary]. Grandsons: Stephen and Roger Brooks, sons of my son John. Granddau: Sarah Garry, dau. of Milly Garry. Mentions: son William Garry's wife Milly Garry. Exors: wife; son Jacob. Wit: James H. Casey; Henry Steeddom; William Legg, his mark. Dated: 17 Sep 1770. Proven: nd. Jacob Brooks petitioned for 550 acres of land on 1 Mar 1757, so he had 10 dependents (including servants and/or slaves) in his household at that time. Benjamin Pearson petitioned for 350 acres on 5 Feb 1759, so he had 6 dependents. His land was laid out adjacent to the Jacob Brooks tract. Jacob Brooks apparently did not mention each child and grandchild in his will, but evidence is slim re who those other dependents may have been in 1757, and which (if any) of his children lived in separate households by then. The SC records of Rev War soldiers (on the Whig side) include many men named Pearson, Person, Pierson, etc., but none of those was named Jacob. Thank you Harriet! I got you and Vivian confused. Can I link you up with Mr Paul Palmer? I sent misinformation about the SC colonial land laws. The rules for acreage changed, effective Aug 1756. Before that time, settlers were allocated 50 acres per household member. From that time forward, a head-of-household was granted 100 acres, plus 50 acres for each additional dependent. So Jacob Brooks arrived from Orange Co NC in 1757 with 9 dependents (not 10), and Benjamin Pearson arrived (from PA??) in 1759 with 5 dependents (not 6).
