Thank you, Judy Russell ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Report of the 4th Meeting of the Friends of Bush River Quaker Cemetery May 14 - 16, 2010 Historic DeWalt House, Newberry, SC Friday, May 14th At 2:45 pm Judy Russell welcomed the participants of the 4th gathering of Friends of Bush River Quaker Cemetery. In attendance at this meeting at the Dewalt House in Newberry, S.C. were: Judy and Tom Russell, Susan and George Webber, Milton Cook, Barry Eiland, Barnett Warren, Marsha Moses, Chris Prince, and Ann Crowley. a.. Participants were asked to introduce themselves and tell about their family lines or research. b.. The general outline for the weekend was presented and refined. c.. Judy presented the attached report on the finances of the group. The main sources of income for Cemetery maintenance are book sales and donations. Book sales, after several successful printings are now about one a month. We will have to rely more heavily on contributions in the future. We will also investigate other publications as means of income. d.. The role of electronic repositories for our research reports was discussed, especially the need for the participation of volunteers interested in this type of activity. We have a great deal of material that could be presented on a web site, but we need a volunteer to coordinate the efforts. e.. Judy introduced Barnett Warren as the person who volunteered to co-chair the next event of the group, if someone else will volunteer to be his co-chair. f.. Many ideas were presented for consideration in regard to a future 5th Gathering. But there is a critical need for more volunteers if our events are to continue. Anyone interested in being co-chair or committee chair of a future gathering, please let Judy Russell know: jrussell2@charter.net g.. No votes were taken. The brainstorming session ended around 5:30 pm. h.. “Ask Granny”© demonstration was cancelled for lack of attendance. Saturday morning, May 15th: The participants were all of the above, plus Terry Koon, Roscoe Bedenbaugh, L.H. Buff, Sam Ziady, and Anne Crocker a.. Sam Ziady, the new director of the Newberry County Library, addressed the group and told of his Quaker connection growing up in Whittier, California. He informed the group about the financial challenges the library faces and asked that the group let the local political leaders and Chamber of Commerce know about the business that groups like ours generates for the community and ask for their support of the library in the future. He requested that the documents that are donated to the library be bound as funding for that is not available. b.. Terry Koon and Chris Prince presented details about Jean Epting Blackmon’s upcoming publication on the Bush River area and families. See the Old Newberry District Genealogical Society website for details to come. They also discussed the 2011 National Genealogical Society meeting in Charleston; volunteers receive a discount for events. c.. We discussed the possibility of a future joint Homecoming venture with our group joining with local groups to have a weekend event that combines many interest groups. Newberry has had Family History Homecoming events in the past. Any such joint venture would have to be at least two years hence, since local groups will be heavily involved in the National Genealogical Society’s meeting in Charleston in 2011. d.. An informal email group (Chris Prince, Terry Koon, Mike Becknell, Barnett Warren, and Judy Russell) to discuss the idea of the future joint venture was created. Others who wish to participate are welcome; send your name to Judy at jrussell2@charter.net e.. Milton Cook gave us information about next year’s Celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Meeting House of the Bush River Quakers in Waynesville, OH. He invited everyone with an interest in this to attend, May 15th, 2011. f.. Judy Russell presented a list of potential projects involving the Bush River Cemetery. There are approximately 50 ideas for improvements and repairs at the Cemetery, and for publishing and electronic projects concerning the Bush River Meeting and its families, but very few can be addressed until further volunteers are involved. g.. A Cemetery Committee has been formed (Milton Cook, Ann Crowley, Chris Prince, Judy Russell) which will work on assessing needs and developing a prioritized list of needs as well as a “wish list.” h.. Judy Russell presented the reports sent to us by our Family Coordinators; we discussed various hard copy and electronic ways of sharing. We will continue collecting the reports from other family coordinators and investigate various ways of sharing the material. Saturday afternoon and evening: a.. Tour and assessment of Bush River Quaker Cemetery led by Judy Russell b.. Tour led by Mike Becknell of Cane Creek Cemetery, Union County c.. Marsha Moses demonstrated the use of the MAC equivalent of Powerpoint in organizing and displaying family history research. Marsha continues to develop her presentation concerning all Bush River Quakers and welcomes your input of family information and photos: mosesm@earthlink.net Sunday, May 16th: a.. Milton Cook was honored for being the one of our group who had visited the most cemeteries during the weekend. b.. Grace Gifford and her son Jason of the Five Rivers Friends Meeting attended and shared ideas about modern Quaker structure and practices. She expressed her group’s appreciation of the work we do in preserving Quaker heritage in South Carolina. c.. Milton Cook presided over our Meeting on the DeWalt House porch. d.. The Meeting and the Homecoming were adjourned at 10:45 am Other activities during the weekend: a.. Assessment and marking of the Gauntt Cemetery to the south of the C.R. Koon Highway, US 76, about a mile southeast of Walmart. There is a very great need to protect this cemetery, which is in a power company right-of-way and in great danger of being destroyed by mowing machines. b.. Assessment of the Chapman/Summers or, Old Dunker Cemetery, well preserved and in good shape due, in part, it is thought, because of a lack of a tree canopy. c.. Pearson and related family cemeteries in Union County d.. A donation was received dedicated to covering the costs of printing and binding our collected family information for donations to the Newberry and Whitmire libraries. Others in attendance during the weekend: Edith Greisser, Mike Becknell, Sharon Shaw, Bernie and Forrest Allen In Conclusion: Those who were able to attend this meeting had a wonderful time meeting each other and exchanging ideas about our families, our research, and our ideas for the future. Our previous gatherings (2002 Clean Up, 2005 Mapping Day, 2008 Homecoming) have been equally enriching. We welcome your thoughts and ideas about future gatherings. Respectfully submitted, Ann K.
