Hi, Tina. The problem is not in locating a Revolutionary account record for Daniel Williams: all those are together in Accounts Audited (A.A. 8541) and Stub Indents (X689 and U397). The big problem is which Daniel Williams they were talking about. When the filing system for SC Revolutionary records was set up after the Civil War, every piece of paper with a given name on it was placed in a single file. One man with multiple spellings could appear in a different file for each spelling, along with all the other men whose spellings intersected. The Daniel Williams file, A.A. 8541, includes records that pertain to Daniel, son of Col. James Williams of Hanover Co VA, and his death at Hayes' Station in 1781. It also includes records for the Daniel Williams who was in the Cheraws District militia under Col. Lemuel Benton. One of the Stub Indents, U397, was for £4.5.8 1/2 as reimbursement for lost property. It's in the right general region, because the account was included in Anderson's Return, [Col. Levi] Casey's [Little River] Regiment, Ninety-Six Brigade. But the other Williams men included on the same return were Joseph, Joshua and Barwick [AKA Baruch] Williams. That Joseph was also a son of Col. James Williams, and also killed at Hayes' Station. Barwick/Baruch Williams was one of the bunch who married Ducketts, Odells, and Prathers, in both MD and SC. I don't know if they were close enough to claim kin with Daniel and Cassandra Prather Williams. Besides Daniel, son of Col. James, Daniel Williams (Sr. and Jr.) from Granville Co NC also lived in the same region (Reedy River in Laurens Co). There would be little benefit in tracking down a record that said that a Daniel Williams (somewhere in SC) had provided services or provisions for some militia company (generally unidentified). There were so very many of them that it would be sheer chance to run across a familiar name connected with one specific Daniel rather than all the others. Bush River Baptist Church was established in 1771. The records begin, however, in 1791. They are on microfilm at Furman University, Baptist Historical Collection, Greenville, SC. Also, see a book by Leah Townsend, South Carolina Baptists 1670-1803. I can also send a copy of what I have. The fastest way to get the A.A. number (for ordering records from SCDAH) is to use their online search engine at www.archivesindex.sc.gov. Just enter the name of the person as Lastname, Firstname, check the Soundex option (because spellings could be practically anything), and specify years 1775 to 1785. That will catch all the service records with their Accounts Audited numbers. The numbers for the Stub Indents are not included, and are not fully-indexed anywhere. Many of them are noted in Bobby Gilmer Moss, Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution. That's the most comprehensive of the reference books for SC military service, but does not include accounts for the provision of supplies. It also includes some material from secondary sources that occasionally turn out to be inaccurate. If you order a copy of an A.A. file, it will include all of the Stub Indent records...although don't count on their being legible or containing much helpful information. An indent signed by "Capt. Smith" won't pinpoint a specific ancestor, unless you already know the locations of all of the Capt. Smiths in Revolutionary SC, and know that your ancestor served with that Capt. Smith. Some of the material covered in the Moss book is online as a Google Book. Since it's copyrighted, not all of it is accessible that way. I have a copy of the book, and can look up a name-and-number, but the online information is the best way to get to a file number for an individual.
