    3. I was working on this family a few months ago and it is still not clear to me but holds a lot of interest. Linda Coate Duddick makes a good case for Mary Bowater but I am not sure if it is her work or from somewhere else. I know that I have copied it but do not have a source and it is repeated around the web. I checked Hopewell Quaker records and she definitely was there. Her will is as follows: "I, Mary Wright, of Frederick County in the Colony of Virginia, being aged and sickly but of a sound and well disposing mind and memory do make this my last will and testament hereby revoking and disanulling all other wills that have heretofore been made or done by me. First, my will is that my body be decently buried and that all my just debts and funeral charges that I leave to be defrayed at the discretion of my executors hereafter named. Secondly, I give and bequeath and demise to the proper use and behalf of him the said Thomas Wright his heirs and assigns forever. Thirdly, I give and bequeath all and singular of my wearing apparel unto my seven daughters, vis., Mary, Hannah, Martha, Elizabeth, Ann, Sarah, Lidia to be equally divided among them. Fourthly, I give and bequeath to my daughter Sarah Pickering, one brass mortar. Fifthly, I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Wright all and singular of my stock and household goods. I also will that what money remains after my decease, from the land sold on Middlefork is to be equally divided among my ten children, vis. James, Isaac, Mary Hannah, Martha, Elizabeth, Ann, Sarah, Lydia and John. Lastly, I ordain and constitute my well beloved daughter, Mary Ballinger, Jesse Pugh and William Pickering sole executors of this my last will and testament as witness my hand and seal this 5th day of the 8th month, 1760. Signed, sealed and acknowledged by the said Mary Wright to be her last will and testament in presence of us. Signed: Mary Wright Witness: Elizabeth Powell, Elinor Rogers, Susanna Bevin. (This was proved March 6, 1764 in Frederick Co., VA) (C-696)" She signed her son in laws will as a witness This also protects any dower rights of their daughter. He is conjectured to be the parent of James Jr. McCool. His will is provided by Sandra Ferguson as follows: James McCool of Backcreek, near Opekon, will recorded 9th 2nd Mo 1751. "To well beloved wife Ann McKool, all goods and personal estate and all property to be used in bringing up our small children." The witnesses were James Wright and Mary Wright , Ann's parents. 5 I have a good bit on this family and don't mind sharing but I think I will put in separate posts so it makes it easier for additional insight from others as I still have a lot to earn. Also, I could do it off line but I guess it is good for this info to go into the archives for others. Sam Ziady, the new director of the Newberry County Library, addressed the group and told of his Quaker connection growing up in Whittier, California. He requested that the documents that are donated to the library be bound as funding for that is not available. b.. Terry Koon and Chris Prince presented details about Jean Epting Blackmon’s upcoming publication on the Bush River area and families. See the Old Newberry District Genealogical Society website for details to come. They also discussed the 2011 National Genealogical Society meeting in Charleston; volunteers receive a discount for events. c.. We discussed the possibility of a future joint Homecoming venture with our group joining with local groups to have a weekend event that combines many interest groups. Newberry has had Family History Homecoming events in the past. Any such joint venture would have to be at least two years hence, since local groups will be heavily involved in the National Genealogical Society’s meeting in Charleston in 2011. d.. She expressed her group’s appreciation of the work we do in preserving Quaker heritage in South Carolina. c.. Milton Cook presided over our Meeting on the DeWalt House porch. d.. The Meeting and the Homecoming were adjourned at 10:45 am Other activities during the weekend: a.. Assessment and marking of the Gauntt Cemetery to the south of the C.R. Koon Highway, US 76, about a mile southeast of Walmart. There is a very great need to protect this cemetery, which is in a power company right-of-way and in great danger of being destroyed by mowing machines. b.. Assessment of the Chapman/Summers or, Old Dunker Cemetery, well preserved and in good shape due, in part, it is thought, because of a lack of a tree canopy. c.. Pearson and related family cemeteries in Union County d.. A donation was received dedicated to covering the costs of printing and binding our collected family information for donations to the Newberry and Whitmire libraries. Others in attendance during the weekend: Edith Greisser, Mike Becknell, Sharon Shaw, Bernie and Forrest Allen In Conclusion: Those who were able to attend this meeting had a wonderful time meeting each other and exchanging ideas about our families, our research, and our ideas for the future. Our previous gatherings (2002 Clean Up, 2005 Mapping Day, 2008 Homecoming) have been equally enriching. We welcome your thoughts and ideas about future gatherings. Respectfully submitted, Ann K. 3. Good Morning, friends. I am very happy to announce that we have a volunteer to create a rootsweb website for us! This is something we have talked about for several years. We've been in need of an interested volunteer and now we have one....our list member Forrest Plumstead of San Antonio, TX. Thanks to Forrest, we already have the mostly empty website up and running at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bushriverquakers/Index.html In the coming months, Forrest will be adding content and photos to the pages. The possibilities are endless. But he wants to begin with vital statistics on all of our +Bush River ancestors,+ whether or not they are buried in the Bush River Cemetery. These would include, as a start, any of the family members who at any time lived in Newberry County. To make this easy for us, Forrest has created a template for you to access, then copy and paste into an email to him with all pertinent information added. His request for basic info on your Quaker ancestors, with details on how to use the template is at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bushriverquakers/templet.html As you will see when you look at the template, there is plenty of flexibility for you to add the details that you want. Please, everyone, put this submission of basic data for the website on your "to-do" list for the coming days and, especially, in the New Year. What a great step for our group! Please forward this email to any one who might have family data to submit. And.......Thank you, again, Forrest! Judy Russell

Tour and assessment of Bush River Quaker Cemetery led by Judy Russell b.. Tour led by Mike Becknell of Cane Creek Cemetery, Union County c.. Marsha Moses demonstrated the use of the MAC equivalent of Powerpoint in organizing and displaying family history research. Marsha continues to develop her presentation concerning all Bush River Quakers and welcomes your input of family information and photos: mosesm@earthlink.net Sunday, May 16th: a.. Milton Cook was honored for being the one of our group who had visited the most cemeteries during the weekend. b.. Grace Gifford and her son Jason of the Five Rivers Friends Meeting attended and shared ideas about modern Quaker structure and practices. 3. I'm just going to throw this out there for informational purposes. Thomas Gilbert b. abt. 1772 in Newberry Co. was the eldest son of Caleb Gilbert b. 1740 in Bucks Co., PA and married Rebecca Gauntt of Newberry County. The father Caleb was born a Quaker, but did not maintain the faith. His grandfather was a Joseph Gilbert who can first definitively be found in American records on the 1693 Bensalem Twp., Bucks Co., PA tax list. There's no evidence that he was ever a practicing Quaker, but his son Thomas would become one (for awhile at least), and DNA ties these Gilberts to the Quaker John Gilbert who came to Bensalem in the 1680s from Cornwall, England. Bensalem is less than 10 miles from Burlington, NJ across the Delaware River, and I stumbled upon this deed record not long ago: West Jersey, New Jersey Deed Records, 1676 - 1721 John David Davis 10 Feb 1688, Richard Finnimore to Bernard Devonish, 5 pounds. Signed Richard Finnimore. Wit: Thomas Fox & Joseph (X) Gilbert. (Devonish was from the Parish of Great Bartholomew, London, now of Blandford Grove, Twp. of New Salem, Fenwick's Colony.) Bernard Devonish was a Quaker from Burlington based on information I found on the Internet. I don't know if this Joseph Gilbert is "our" Joseph Gilbert, but it certainly could be, and would place him in Burlington, NJ at about the same time the Gauntts were there. Just an FYI. 1. [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Correction on acreage
    2. Harriet Imrey
    3. I sent misinformation about the SC colonial land laws. The rules for acreage changed, effective Aug 1756. Before that time, settlers were allocated 50 acres per household member. From that time forward, a head-of-household was granted 100 acres, plus 50 acres for each additional dependent. So Jacob Brooks arrived from Orange Co NC in 1757 with 9 dependents (not 10), and Benjamin Pearson arrived (from PA??) in 1759 with 5 dependents (not 6). Harriet -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Benjamin Pearson + Agatha Brooks and Margaret Evans Date: Mon, 31 Oct 2011 21:24:56 -0500 From: Harriet Imrey <hhimrey@gmail.com> To: sc-bushriverquakers@rootsweb.com Will of Jacob Brooks, SC Will Book TT 1774-1778, p. 54: Jacob Brooks, his mark, Craven County, planter. Wife: Rosana, use of my plantation where I now live during her life. Children: Jacob, John and William Garry [sic: Gary]. Grandsons: Stephen and Roger Brooks, sons of my son John. Granddau: Sarah Garry, dau. of Milly Garry. Mentions: son William Garry's wife Milly Garry. Exors: wife; son Jacob. Wit: James H. Casey; Henry Steeddom; William Legg, his mark. Dated: 17 Sep 1770. Proven: nd. Jacob Brooks petitioned for 550 acres of land on 1 Mar 1757, so he had 10 dependents (including servants and/or slaves) in his household at that time. Benjamin Pearson petitioned for 350 acres on 5 Feb 1759, so he had 6 dependents. His land was laid out adjacent to the Jacob Brooks tract. Jacob Brooks apparently did not mention each child and grandchild in his will, but evidence is slim re who those other dependents may have been in 1757, and which (if any) of his children lived in separate households by then. The SC records of Rev War soldiers (on the Whig side) include many men named Pearson, Person, Pierson, etc., but none of those was named Jacob. Harriet Imrey
