    3. Hi Doris - I found Hallalujah (our spelling) in my Yarnell book. We have that she was born 1808 or 09 and married James Byerly 12/7/1830; James b. 6/12/1807. Her parents are Jemima (Connor) and Joel Yarnell. Joel is the nephew of Mordecai Yarnell who married Jane Duncan. Hallalujah and James had 7 children: Martin b. 4/12/1831 Hannah b. 2/13/1832 Mordecai b. 3/17/1835 Thomas b. 3/8/1837 Mariah b 2/21/1840 James Sterling b. 7/2/1842 d. 10/?/1910 Newton Jasper b. 1844 I will print out the Byerly data and keep it with my Yarnell book. 3. A lot of this material started with me as info. Is from my Watkins family files...but it's nice to see it posted so well. I'll share this with the family. If anyone knows even more, I'd like to hear directly at df99md@verizon.net I'd especially like to know the connection of the first Jasper Byerley to the Shearer family in whose SC will he is mentioned. I suspect that his first wife was a member of that family, but have no other proof. Thanks, Doris -----Original Message----- From: sc-bushriverquakers-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:sc-bushriverquakers-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Harriet Imrey Sent: Friday, December 23, 2011 2:53 PM To: sc-bushriverquakers@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] a Yarnell in my direct Byerley of SC line that went to TN, includes Moore, Hart, McClain, Duncan, French, and many more You can find more details about the extended family at www.dutchforkchapter.org/htm/beyrle.htm. Original immigrant John Caspar Philip Beyrle (Sr.) was single when he arrived in Charlestown on the ship Caledonia in 1752. The biography includes other members of the family who remained in the Dutch Fork section of Newberry Co SC. 3. You can find more details about the extended family at www.dutchforkchapter.org/htm/beyrle.htm. Original immigrant John Caspar Philip Beyrle (Sr.) was single when he arrived in Charlestown on the ship Caledonia in 1752. The biography includes other members of the family who remained in the Dutch Fork section of Newberry Co SC. 1. [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Quakers of TN from SC, Duncan, Millsaps
    2. Doris F
    3. I do not know if anyone knows more about the community, but there was also a Quaker community at nearby Friendsville, TN... I'm told that Quaker life was very difficult on the TN frontier where guns became important in the remote mountains and where it was particularly difficult to remain neutral from Indians and other violent encounters. Another Quaker community: The Millsap/s name is associated with the Duncan name in TN and we recently had discussion of one of the Millsap cemeteries on a private list that I started for discussion of the Duncan name in E Tn. Copied by: Lawrence McConkey, Englewood, Tennessee The Millsaps Farm Cemetery is about 27 miles up the Little Tennessee river from Vonore on the river road leading into the Unicoi Mountains. It is over one ledge of the mountain from the river about 2 miles and on the nearest public road to the river. The cemetery was established at the time of the Civil War. Persumably the Millsaps family entered this land. It is now owned by Mrs. Mary Millsaps. The cemetery has been discontinued for over 50 years. It is in the woods and covers about 50 X 30 feet of ground. Vonore is 9 miles North of Madisonville. There are 2 inscriptions, 6 graves marked with field stones and 4 or more unmarked graves. 12 hours ago . Like Comment from a researcher: Happy Top Cemetery is also known as Tallassee or Tallassie Cemetery. It is located just off the Mount Pleasant Road about 3 miles south of Citico Beach. "A short distance from the old Carringer Post Office on the Millsaps farm is the Old Tallassee School. In the beginning the Quakers established a church there. After the church fell into a state of disrepair, a school was built there. It was known as Tallassee School. The Quakers established a cemetery by the church. The school was used for church purposes and when a revival was held there the people got happy. From that time on the school house was known as "Happy Top."

    3. Doris - I was very surprised in reading your Jane Duncan info to find a relative - Mordecai Yarnell. Mordecai's parents are Daniel and (?) Yarnall. According to our records Daniel left PA after the Rev. War and moved to NC, then to TN, and about 1809 settled in Knox County, about 10 miles east of Knoxville. The census spelled his name Yarnell. Daniel is buried on the Yarnell Homestead, east of Knoxville. Mordecai and Jane Duncan (b. 1772, d. 11.20.1846) had Jinny who inherited from her grandfather a negro man Huey. Jinny had married Alfred Standifer. Wouldn't this inheritance be outside the Quaker rules? They also had Rebecca md John Tillery; Henry John md Susan Standifer and Ellen Murray; Martha md Wm. Dunlap; Isaac md. Rebecca Bonham; Frances md James Thompson and Stephen Marshall; Rachel md. Wm Parks; Isabelle unmarried; and Minerva md. Jess Parks. I can go down further on Mordecai and Jane's descendants if anyone is interested. They can contact me at threemares@gmail.com. I would like to put in my records the names of Jane's parents if you have them. Like you, I've hunted lost Willis names to help in my search to find ancestors. I'd love to hear from anyone with Hooker, McPherson, or Duncan/Dunkin ties. At any rate, here are a few early Willis names in early ETN: This one looks like a candidate for trouble. :) Descendants of Anthony Duncan 1 Anthony DUNCAN Abt. 1743 possible brother/unproven;PArt of VA line in REv. Anthony Duncan, born 1743-44 Lancaster Co. PA; married, wife unknown; served in the Revolutionary War from Augusta Co. VA on the VA Line, applied for a pension on 25 Oct. 1832, age 88, in Greene Co. TN. He had served a year at Fort Dinwiddie; later was drafted and served 3 months under Col. Trigg and marched from Montgomery Co. VA. He had lived in Augusta Co. VA, then Montgomery Co. VA, then after the revolution had moved to Washington Co. TN, then to Greene Co. TN for 30 years; his file included testimony by Azariah Doty (see 2.10.). (Rev. Pen. S-1808) No record has yet been found of Anthony Duncan in Augusta Co. VA. However, see Andrew Duncan of Augusta Co. VA, after 1.7. Anthony was in Montgomery Co. VA 1777-1782; he and Andrew (2.) gave their Oaths of Allegiance to John Montgomery on 6 Sept. 1777 (1776) in Montgomery Co. VA ("VA Military Records" Montgomery Co.'s Revolutionary Heritage, by Ruby Altizer Roberts, pg. 208); and Anthony was in Jeremiah Pearce's Company, over 18, on the list of 5 April 1781 ("Militia of Montgomery Co. VA 1777-1790" by Kegley). He was on the tax list of 1782 with 1 white pole, 4 horses, and 10 cattle, and land ("Montgomery Co. VA Tax List 1782" by Kegley; "1782-1787 VA Taxpayers" by Fothergill), as were Andrew (2.), James (5.), and John (3.?). In Montgomery Co. VA in 1782, Anthony Dunkin, assignee of Joseph Dunkin (4.), had a commissioner's certificate for a land entry of 200 acres on a branch of Reed Creek, settled 1770 ("Early Adventures on the Western Waters" by Kegley, Vol. II, pg. 30, 103). Anthony Duncan bought 50 acres in Washington Co. TN in 1791 on the ridge between Limestone and Sinking Creeks (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 4, pg. 231) and sold it to George Jackson in 1794 when he lived in Greene Co. TN (Washington Co. TN Deed Book E, pg. 68). He owned another 152 acres at the head of Sinking Creek which he sold the same date to William Jackson (Washington Co. TN Deed Book E, pg. 88). He was taxed on 200 acres about 1790 (undated tax list). His land was very close to land owned by Joseph Duncan from 1790 to 1795 (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 3, pg. 172; Book 7, pg. 199, grant to and deed of William Carson). This is probably Joseph (4.) since it is unlikely his son, Joseph (1.2.) who married in 1802 would have owned land by 1790. -- One Joseph Duncan fathered two children by Elizabeth Dodd, and posted bond on 27 April 1803, with Aaron Newman and John Smith his securities, for the maintenance of Robert Duncan age 1 year 10 months and Kinas Duncan age 3 weeks ("Greene Co. TN Minutes of the Court of Common Pleas 1797-1807" by Houston, pg. 134, minutes book pg. 37; from Evelyn Sigler). On 30 July 1807, John Dodd posted bond to maintain a child he fathered by Elizabeth Dodd, and on the same date John Dodd filed a complaint against Elizabeth Dodd for breach of the peace; Elizabeth was to pay $300 unless she was of good behavior for a year ("Greene Co. TN Minutes" pg. 335, minutes book pg. 250-252). There is no marriage recorded in Greene Co. TN for an Elizabeth Dodd. Aaron Newman, Joseph Duncan's security, married Elizabeth Duncan (1.7.) in 1802 in Greene Co. TN. One John Smith, perhaps Joseph Duncan's security, married Sarah Duncan (Sec. III, 1.3.) in 1798 in Greene Co. TN. One John Dodd was bondsman for the marriage of Joseph Duncan's sister Mary (1.4.) to Jacob White in 1802. Joseph Duncan was in Greene Co. TN from 1805 to 1816 (tax lists); "Joshua" was in Greene Co. TN in 1830 (pg. 213), when his father lived with him. Joseph's will dated 18 Feb. 1833 named his wife Polly Dunken if living or his sisters (unnamed) or their legal heirs; Elizabeth McNeese, (1.6.) wife of Evan McNeese, was to be taken in with his sisters and considered the same; "my father, Anthony Dunken having contracted and agreed with me for a certain tract of land, which I now possess and live on, which my father by agreement made a will leaving me the land for his support; my wife Polly to take care of him; if she dies or remarries, the land to go to Joseph Smith, (1.3.1.) my sister's son and grandson of my father." Executors were his friends Samuel McNeese and Gravender McNeese; witnesses were Michael Bright Sr. and Jacob White (1.4.). The will was proved 22 April 1833 (Greene Co. TN Will Book 1828-1854, new pg. 393, copied from old pg. 111). Polly Duncan was in Greene Co. TN 1840 (pg. 54), and Mary Duncan in 1850 (pg. 572). Polly Duncan had a grant of 25-1/2 acres of land in 1839 (TN Land Grant Index). Polly wrote her will 21 Oct. 1869, probated 4 April 1881 (Greene Co. TN) and left her plantation called Boo place and all her personal property to Alfred Duncan, a man of color, for supporting her; her will mentioned Joseph Duncan, deceased ("Greene Co. TN Wills and Administrations" from Evelyn Sigler). An Abel Wilis is on Madison CO, TN (W TN) census of 1830 and apparently was at Overton CO, TN, Academy as a trustee in 1813, and called "Captain." And here is a VA to GA connection: The Virginia Herald and Fredericksburg Advertiser January 29, 1789 2:5 For sale, Two well known tracts of land, to wit: Popcastle & Lambs Creek, in the county of King George, lying on the river, 15 miles below Fredericksburg. Popcastle was occupied by the late Col. William Champ; it contains 1288 acres of productive land, well adapted to grain and abound in cedar. The buildings consist of a two story brick dwelling house, kitchen, dairy, smoke house, stable, barn, and negro houses; also, a good mill seat whereon there is a mill house, and a pair of stones, that may be had with the premises. Lambs Creek is now in the possession of Col. Lewis Willis; it contains 657 acres, adjoining the other land; the buildings are greatly out of repair and of but little value. This tract has also a valuable mill seat, with the whole of the dam remaining, there having been a mill formerly. Each of those tracts, bounds on the river, and the description of the above may be applied fully to this, each having the greatest advantages of wild fowl, fish, and a range for cattle, sheep and hogs, and each a good landing. A great proportion of both tracts is flat land, very durable, and a considerable quantity of meadow ground. Any person inclinable to purchase, may known the terms by application to Col. Lewis Willis, as I shall be a few weeks absent from this place. A good bargain may be had for cash or negroes, if the purchaser would take both tracts, and in that case credit would be given for one third the purchase money. Francis Willis, Of Georgia. 1. [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Any Willis connections in PA, VA, MD, SC, or Greene, TN?
    2. Anne Crocker
    3. Another of those lateral searches: I'm sure we all have one of those Willis middle names somewhere. This is a bit different. In our DNA subgroup for descendants of William Dodd (data from 1718-ca 1771), Quaker of probably Chester, PA, then Loudoun, VA, and finally the area that became Union, SC, we have matches at 67 markers to the surnames Campbell, Jennings, and now Willis. These are perfect 67/67 and near perfect 65/67 matches for a haplotype that has almost no other extraneous matches in the entire database, so a rather rare haplotype. Now we think we've can narrow down the Campbell and Jennings connection point to Loudoun, VA, in the 1747-1810 period when those randy Dodd men were not very good Quakers at all. Our matching participant for the Willis surname goes back to a James Henry Willis who appears in Greene, TN, in the later half of 1800s and who does not match the Willises that would seem to fit the paper trail. SO We still had Dodds in Leesburg and around Waterford in Loudoun, VA in the first half of 1800. That's just across the Potomac from MD counties, where we know the William Dodd earlier interacted with the Monocacy MM (his family was part of the Fairfax MM from 1745/6 on but were NOT Quakers in PA) and son Thomas dallied with a woman in one of the German settlements, and just east of the Hopewell MM in Frederick, VA, where son Edward Dodd married and lived. It's sons of Edward Dodd and wife Mary Littler that went on to Greene, TN, by 1796. Also after 1768 there were two Dodd sons Thomas and Jesse in the Padgett's Creek area of now Union, SC, each of whom had children that we have no names for (looking at 1790 census records and going on family oral histories). Thomas had bought land ca 1766 first in the Bush River MM area that Enos Elleman later owned, but moved to Union when his family, sibs, and probably the old couple William and Catherine came south in 1768. If you know of any Willis families around these areas prior to ca 1840, please help steer me in their direction. Merry Christmas to all of you. And if you have not yet ordered a DNA kit during the December sale at FamilyTreeDNA.com, this is the time to do it. This DNA research really is exciting. Anne Crocker Concord, NC

    3. Beverly Rampey: I believe I have your Mendenhall ~ Yarnall link. There was a Benjamin Mendenhall (sometimes Mendinghall) who was a wheelwright in Concord PA. He was the son of Moses Mendenhall of Wiltshire, England. He married Ann Pennell, daughter of Robert Pennell of Chester Creek on 17th day of 2nd month (April) 1689. They had a daughter named Hannah born in 1690, who later married Thomas Marshall of Concord., and a son named Benjamin. Benjamin Jr., b. 5 May 1691, married Lydia Roberts, daughter of Owen Roberts of Gwynedd, Philadelphia County, on 9 May 1717. Their 2nd child was Hannah, b. 19 January 1719/20. She is the one who married Nathan Yarnall, as appears in the minutes of the Chester Monthly Meeting dated "26/12/1749/50". That translates to 26 February 1750 New Style. The note states that Nathan Yarnall requested a certificate to New Garden to marry "Hannah Mendinghall, dau. of Benjamin Mendinghall dec'd." Chester MM minutes dated 30 July 1750 record that "Hannah Yarnall, wife of Nathan, produced a certificate from Newgarden." All the above was found in volumes 1 & 2 of EARLY CHURCH RECORDS OF DELAWARE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, edited by John Pitts Launey et al. Paul C. Palmer (Comal County, TX)and the body of the message

Thanks.... you have gotten me back into learning about them. I think about the Wrights a lot......... and admire much of what they and members of their community accomplished......... especially in supporting abolition..... I know that one of their descendants, William Wright, had one or more slaves at first at Bush River...... they must have gone through a lot of soul-searching. Her will is as follows: "I, Mary Wright, of Frederick County in the Colony of Virginia, being aged and sickly but of a sound and well disposing mind and memory do make this my last will and testament hereby revoking and disanulling all other wills that have heretofore been made or done by me. (This was proved March 6, 1764 in Frederick Co., VA) (C-696)" She signed her son in laws will as a witness This also protects any dower rights of their daughter. He is conjectured to be the parent of James Jr. McCool. His will is provided by Sandra Ferguson as follows: James McCool of Backcreek, near Opekon, will recorded 9th 2nd Mo 1751. "To well beloved wife Ann McKool, all goods and personal estate and all property to be used in bringing up our small children." The witnesses were James Wright and Mary Wright , Ann's parents. 5 I have a good bit on this family and don't mind sharing but I think I will put in separate posts so it makes it easier for additional insight from others as I still have a lot to earn. Also, I could do it off line but I guess it is good for this info to go into the archives for others. In looking at your website for Chester County folks, I see Mendenhall as one of your names. In their family there are a couple of Hannahs with no later families. I'm looking for a Hannah Mendenhall (I don't have her parents) who was born 1/19/1720, d. 8/19/1760, md. Nathan Yarnall on 5/10/1750. 2. An article in "The American Genealogist" July/Oct 1997, p233-237 by Stewart Baldwin is probably where the information from Linda Dudick originated. If you can't find a copy I have one. I descend from Susanna Wright, daughter of John Wright and Rachel Wells, who married Isaac Hollingsworth. I haven't worked on this family for awhile but do have information and am willing to share anything I have. Burnis Argo In a message dated 12/19/2011 7:53:28 P.M. Central Standard Time, vivm2007@woh.rr.com writes: I was working on this family a few months ago and it is still not clear to me but holds a lot of interest. Linda Coate Duddick makes a good case for Mary Bowater but I am not sure if it is her work or from somewhere else. I know that I have copied it but do not have a source and it is repeated around the web. I checked Hopewell Quaker records and she definitely was there. Her will is as follows: "I, Mary Wright, of Frederick County in the Colony of Virginia, being aged and sickly but of a sound and well disposing mind and memory do make this my last will and testament hereby revoking and disanulling all other wills that have heretofore been made or done by me. First, my will is that my body be decently buried and that all my just debts and funeral charges that I leave to be defrayed at the discretion of my executors hereafter named. Secondly, I give and bequeath and demise to the proper use and behalf of him the said Thomas Wright his heirs and assigns forever. Thirdly, I give and bequeath all and singular of my wearing apparel unto my seven daughters, vis., Mary, Hannah, Martha, Elizabeth, Ann, Sarah, Lidia to be equally divided among them. Fourthly, I give and bequeath to my daughter Sarah Pickering, one brass mortar. Fifthly, I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Wright all and singular of my stock and household goods. I also will that what money remains after my decease, from the land sold on Middlefork is to be equally divided among my ten children, vis. James, Isaac, Mary Hannah, Martha, Elizabeth, Ann, Sarah, Lydia and John. Lastly, I ordain and constitute my well beloved daughter, Mary Ballinger, Jesse Pugh and William Pickering sole executors of this my last will and testament as witness my hand and seal this 5th day of the 8th month, 1760. Signed, sealed and acknowledged by the said Mary Wright to be her last will and testament in presence of us. Signed: Mary Wright Witness: Elizabeth Powell, Elinor Rogers, Susanna Bevin. 1. [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] James Wright and Rachel Wells
    2. Vivian
    3. There is a lot already on the internet and since I am not sure what you already have I won't post it all here but this is where I personally stand with this family and what I have discovered so far. This is the first generation out of Va. Wrights were firm Quakers but I do not think the Wells were or there were definitely two Wells families that got confused. The Wells have a big family taboo. Rachel Wells parents Joseph Wells and Margaret Swanson may or may not be the siblings of George Wells and Susannah Swanson. Susannah Swanson was married to James Ward and had children. She names one Wells Ward. She has is reprimanded by Queen Anne's vestry for co habitation with George Wells and they later married. That should be St Barnabas Church not Quaker. I have not actually found the record myself to confirm or deny the record. The affair is attested to because Nathan Ward descendents DNA are a perfect match with other descendents of Thomas and Susannah Plummer (another Quaker name). But there is not questions about this Joseph being the brother of George because DNA is not matching. Since I have not researched Joseph Wells/Margaret Swanson's children for very long, is there a possibility of an adoption, first unknown marriage or something that could explain this. So much location and matching surnames just makes it seem so apparent that this would be a two brothers married two sisters so a lot of research still needs to be done. It is obvious why George and Susannah would now be outside the Quaker church and it appears that Joseph and Margaret raise their children at Cane Creek ( I actually visited there for three days this summer but need a lot more time). This land deed also ties this group together. Prince George's Land Records 1710-1717 - Liber F -folio 428 o Indenture, 10 Dec 1714 From: James Ward, planter of Prince George's County, and Susannah his wife lately called Susannah Swanson To: George Wells, planter of Prince George's County For 2 pounds of tobacco James Ward and Susannah his wife acknowledged the right of George Wells to ownership of a parcel called Swansea's Lot Signed: James Ward (seal), Susannah Ward (seal) Witnessed: Richard Rose, William Housbin (mark) I have not looked into what other Wells families that Joseph could belong with if he is not a son of Thomas and Susannah Plummer. Here is Thomas's will. Proves he has a son Joseph and not at all happy with George! I have it somewhere which other descendent's have proven matches but it is not at my fingertips. Wells, Thomas, Sr., planter,Prince George's Co.,26th Sept., 1718; 5th Jan., 1718/19. To wife Frances, dwelling plantation, "Strife," and adj. tract "Something," in all 218 A., during life; at her decease to four sons, Thomas, Robert, Nathan and Joseph. Shd. all of sd. sons, Thomas, Nathan and Robert, die without issue, lands to descend to son Joseph; shd. he die without issue, to 4 daus. equally, viz.: Frances, Mary, Sarah and Elizabeth, and their hrs. To sd. daus., personalty. To son George, 5s. To wife Frances, extx., and hrs., house and lot in Queen Ann's Town and residue of estate. Test: Richard Duckett, Wm. John Black, Thomas Howell. 14. 724. MARYLAND CALENDAR OF WILLS: Volume 4 This comes from the website of Tod Marshall. I corresponded with him breifly. My orignial interest in this was Rachel Wells. http://todmar.net/ancestry/wright_main.htm son of James and Mary was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania on January 28, 1716. He removed from Nottingham Monthly Meeting to Nonocacy MM in Prince George County, Maryland, where he married Rachel Wells. She was born in Anne Arundel county and was the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Wells. Both John and Rachel became Overseers of the Men's and Women's Meetings of Monocacy in 1745. They transferred to Hopewell. In 1749, with the seven minor children born to them by that time, the Wright's were granted a certificate to Carvers Creek Monthly Meeting in North Carolina. There they became charter members in 1751 of Cane Creek MM in Orange County, NC. They became parents of six more children during their time in NC. According to the Quaker Records from Historic Camden, S. C., by Kirkland and Kennedy, they were present in Camden District by 1760 when John Wright appears as a witness to a deed. The Annals of Newberry mention three more children born to John and Rachel after they removed to South Carolina. Reportedly, Bush River Monthly Meeting in Newberry County to which the Wright's belonged was established in 1770. However Cane Creek MM records Rachel Wright's transfer to Bush River in 1767. Their presence in SC prior to the time of Rachel's transfer suggests there was no meeting to which they might belong prior to 1767. It may also be presumed that the Wright's were instrumental in the formation of a meeting at Bush River. During the migration of southern Quakers to the Ohio Valley in the early 1800's, almost all of John and Rachel Wright's surviving children and grandchildren became a part of that movement. A good number of them, particularly the Hollingsworth and Cook descendants, became Hicksites and Wilburites when they separated from the Orthodox Quakers. From Abstracts of Old Wills, John Wright Sr will dated 9/17/1789 proved 6/8/1790. Wife (no name). Ch: Joseph (dead)-to his son John; John to his son Jesse; Nathan to his son, William; and to my son-in-law, Isaac Hollingsworth, to have my shoe-makers tools and one certain cow and calf. Other legatees, Joab Brooks, son of James Brooks; Joseph Cook, my grandson, (son of Isaac Hollingsworth); Isaac Cook, my son in law to have the price of a cow which he never paid for; Rachel Cook (daughter of Isaac Cook. Exrs: Joseph Wright, my son.
