    1. [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Peninah Liles/Lyles and John Harbert
    2. Harriet Imrey
    3. There is considerable documentation of their marriage, but no absolute documentary connection to the Quaker Harberts of Newberry Co. Penina(h) Liles/Lyles (called Nina) was born 1785 in Edgefield Co SC, daughter of David and Deborah Liles. The family lived on Halfway Swamp of the Saluda River (just across from Newberry Co), were on the Edgefield censuses of 1790 and 1800, in Abbeville in 1810. In 1820, Deborah Liles was a 45+ head-of-household in Abbeville (M33, Roll 118, p. 35) with 4 sons and a daughter in residence. The adjacent household was headed by Lynah (sic) Herbert or Herbirt, a woman 26<45 with 2 sons under 10. If that's "Nina" (which seems likely), her family included Joseph Lyles Harbert, b. 4 Mar 1813, and Allen Walter Harbert, b. ~1815. She is attributed with two additional sons by Liles family historians, a Thomas Harbert b. ~1817 and James Dennis Harbert, b. 10 Dec 1823. Perhaps her husband went-missing, returned later. Deborah Liles died in 1825, Joseph Liles (her oldest son) was appointed administrator on 3 Oct 1825 (Abbeville Probate Records, Box 56, Pack 1323). I haven't seen an abstract of the probate records, but they are said to name John Harbert as Peninah's husband. Widow Peninah Harbert and her Liles siblings were all in Pickens Co (Oconee Section) by 1840. I can't check the census listings to see how many sons she had, because HeritageQuest does not index the censuses of 1830-50, doesn't do Soundex anyway. Peninah died between 1850 and 1860. It is certainly possible that John Harbert (b. 1769) second-married Peninah Lyles (b. 1785) in Edgefield or Abbeville Co SC in ~1812. The name of Peninah's son Allen Walter Harbert is at least suggestive of that. Joseph Liles, brother of Peninah, signed his will on 28 Dec 1869 in Oconee (formerly Pickens) Co SC. The will, and extensive probate documents, are online at http://home.earthlink.net/~jbl12403/lyles_family/Joseph.Will.html. Residual legatees, after the death of his wife, were his siblings or their surviving children. The children of Nina (Peninah) Lyles Harbert who survived her brother Joseph Lyles in 1870 were Joseph L. (Lyles) Harbert and Allen (Walter) Harbert. Allen W. Herbert stated in the 1880 Oconee Co census that both his parents were born in SC. A man named Walter Herbert owned land in Edgefield Co by 1813, very near the previous residence of the David Liles family. Walter Herbert (b. 1773 in Newberry Co) owned Edgefield Co. lands adjacent to lands of his sons Isaac and William in the 1840's. John Harbert (b. 1769) has no land references in Edgefield Co at all--not even listed as an adjacent landowner to anybody. This does not mean that he couldn't have met-and-married a woman in the region, following the death of whoever he'd married in 1789 (probably a Lydia). Harriet Imrey [email protected]

    3. Greetings: Those with links to our Coppock name may want to check http://wjcoppock.googlepages.com/home. As you will see, the first part of a monograph presenting documentation on the name back to a1379 Yorkshire tax roll is available. The second part of the monograph, which starts with Colonial US Coppocks, is in preparation. Much has been gathered and will be presented as text and illustrations, and a database CD on well over 4K Coppocks and thjose closely related will be included. As the above site also indicates, we're interested in hearing from anyone willing to share possibly additional information and documentation that might be of general interest to those wanting to know about Coppock. Such things as the LA flea market surfacing of a Coppock Bible mentioned by Gary Hawley are of particular interest. We'd heard a number of years ago of a Coppock Bible said to be in Medford, Oregon, but so far we've not been able to track it down.. Then there are those Coppock engraved silver spoons mentioned in John Coppock's will of 1587! Hope to hear from those interested in this project, but since we're away from home much of the time, we may respond somewhat less than instantaneously. -- Cheerio, Walter and Ruth Coppock

    3. By now you have an email addressed to Bush River Quakers by Harriet Imrey. I haven't met Harriet but I feel I know here by her work, she uses source documents to support her assertions. I haven't any of those sources she is using, and these she has found are wonderfully revealing. Captain, take whatever she has respecting recorded data as gospel because these sources are the very best that can be had. John, according to the documents was born in 1764. Harriet has facts beyond questioning; insure that you disregard facts that are not compatible with documentation. She does speculate here as to John's wife. Larry (in El paso) and myself separately concluded that John's wife was Penina Lyles. I am embarrassed to say I have no recollection of how I acquired my information, and my documents are in storage and inaccessible for another month. I believe I got the information from a listing of marriages in SC, but I no longer trust my memory. Harriet lists the complete family, which should be valuable in a number of ways in your future inquiries. Moreover, Harriet's detective work in determining the name of John's wife, which runs contrary to my own conclusions, may be correct. Here on this subject is a snippet quote from Larry Herbert of El Paso I found about a year ago on Genealogy.com: ..." I am a decendant of John Herbert & Penina Lyles, who were born in Newberry South Carolina, They were Quakers whose family came from New Jersey. My line descends from John Herbert 1769[sic]-abt 1825 to Joseph Lyles Herbert 1813-1879 to James Madison Herbert 1836-1895 to Miles Cleveland Herbert 1890-1968 to Haskel Frank James Herbert 1913-1991 to Myself." - Larry Herbert. Larry sent me all of his data in print and on a disk some years ago, but they are now among the files stored to move to Idaho, if ever I get this house sold. I will send you the hard copy of his data when I have my hands on it, in about a month. Not as certain I can find the electronic version. His web address is too feint to read on the Genealogy.com website: my eyesight is poor. But you might try that website, and try to reach Larry directly. Use Larry not Lawrence. Harriet has given us some wonderful data. Let me know is I can help with the New Jersey family and the Herbert family in Wales. 1. [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Walter and Ann Harbert
    2. I am interested in the Harbour, Harbert, Herbert family because I am a descendant of Mary Harbert, daughter of Walter Harbert (b. 1742) and his wife, Ann. Mary Harbert married Joseph Cook. The abstracted records of Bush River Monthly Meeting of Friends, as they appear in Vol. I of William Wade Hinshaw's _Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy_, indicate that John Harbert was born on 3 mo. 8, 1769. On 2 mo. 1789 John Harbert was reported to have married out of unity. This means that he had not married according to Friends discipline. His bride may or may not have been been a member of Friends at the time of his marriage. On 4 mo. 6, 1796 John Harbert was disowned by Bush River Monthly Meeting. The abstracted records do not state why he was disowned. Perhaps the manuscript records at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC give more details. In those times, members were often disowned for marriage contrary to discipline, but this disownment would have been seven years after the marriage was reported. I do not believe that "disownment" among Friends at that time had quite the stigma that "shunning" has today among certain Anabaptist sects. Disowned persons could no longer participate in Friends business meetings. Their spouses and children were often kept on the membership rolls. They often joined in Quaker migrations to other territories. They could generally be buried in Quaker cemeteries. Some of the Women's Minutes of Bush River MM have been lost, and there seems to be no indication in the abstracted Men's and Women's Minutes which exist as to whose wife Lydia Herbert might have been. Walter Herbert, (born 1873) son of Walter Harbert Sr. and Ann, lived until 1851 and was buried in the Bush River Cemetery. He appears to have been disowned by Bush River MM on 1st mo. 29, 1803. He married Ann Galbreath.. I have probably mentioned in another mailing that I doubted whether Walter Harbert Sr. and his wife, Ann, were members of Friends when they arrived at Bush River. Walter was received into membership by his request on 3 mo. 30, 1776. Ann was probably received at the same time, although the Women's Minutes for that time frame had been lost. It appears that Walter Harbert (b. 1742 ) was a grandson of Walter Harbert 1673-1755), a physician, a member of Middletown Friends Meeting near Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey. This Walter Harbert is mentioned by traveling Friends ministers of the time as someone who would accompany them from one place to another. It appears that Walter Harbert (b. 1742) was a son of Paul Harbert (b. 1715), a son of Walter Harbert, the physician. Paul Harbert seems to disappear from Quaker records as a young man. He may have died before his father and is not mentioned in his father's will. I would suspect that Paul Harbert may have married a non-Friend, and his son, Walter Harbert (b. 1742) may have married a non-Friend. However this Walter Harbert who migrated to South Carolina, if he spent his childhood in New Jersey, could have remembered his grandfather, the Quaker physician. During the years from 1720 to 1750, there was significant Quaker migration from Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey to Loudon and Frederick Counties in northern Virginia. There seemed to be several Harbert families from New Jersey in this migration. Some settled near Winchester Virginia, tending to become Baptists. A number of the early Quaker settlers at Bush River came from the Winchester area. It is my unproven theory that Walter Harbert (b. 1742) and Ann may have migrated first to Winchester and then joined with the migration to South Carolina. - Herbert Standing, Earlham, Iowa. **************Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. 2. Harriet Imrey
    3. This is the single Harbert family mentioned in the Bush River MM records, or mentioned as Quaker in Annals of Newberry or the early deed books. The spelling was generally Harbert, but Harbour, Harburt and Herbart were alternates. The second generation preferred Herbert. Walter Sr. marked with an H, did not spell. Walter Harbert (Sr.) did not get a colonial land grant, so may have arrived in Newberry not long before he was received by request at Bush River MM on 30 Mar 1776 (i.e., no certificate from a previous meeting). He purchased land between Little River and Beaverdam Creek of the Saluda. He was in fellowship at the time of his death on 26 Oct 1797. The MM records list the children of Walter Harbert (Sr.) and Ann: 1. Mary, b. 15 Jan 1765. 2. Rebecah, b. 28 May 1767; m. Isaac Jenkins on 10 Nov 1785. 3. John, b. 8 Mar 1764; rpt mou Feb 1789; disowned 30 Apr 1796. 4. Ann, b. 3 Apr 1771. 5. Walter, b. 13 Jun 1773; m. Ann Galbreath on 27 Feb 1796; disowned 29 Jan 1803. 6. Alizabeth, b. 18 Nov 1775. 7. Rachel, b. 13 Feb 1777; disowned 24 Feb 1798. 8. Charity, b. 10 Sep 1781. 9. Peter, b. 14 Apr 1784. 10. Thomas, b. 10 Aug 1787; d. 13 May 1788. In 1809, the 130 remaining members of Bush River MM and Cane Creek MM were joined to New Garden MM. Those members included Ann Herbert sr. (widow of Walter Harbert Sr.); Lydia Herbert (wife of John?) and children Esther, Ann, Eleanor, Martha, Jobe and Lydia; and Ann Herbert (Ann Galbreath, wife of Walter Jr.?) and children Hannah, Isaac, William and Peter. The 8 May 1822 men's minutes show that Isaac, William and Peter Harbert (sons of Walter Jr.) were received at Springfield MM; the 5 Jun 1822 women's minutes list Ann Herbert (wife of Walter Jr.?) as joining Springfield MM. The Newberry documents do not show absolute proof that the woman who married John Harbert in 1789 (one daughter by 1790) was named Lydia, but imply it. John and Mary Eleman sold land in 1793 to Aron Mills [also Miles], all of them from Quaker families. The deed was witnessed by John Harbert (who marked with an H, as did Walter Harbert Sr.), Lydia Harbert, and Rebecca Mills (Newberry Deed Book B, pp. 491-2). A same-surnamed man and woman who jointly witnessed a deed were nearly always a married couple, but there were a few exceptions. Lydia Harbert in 1793 was not a wife of Walter Jr. (who married Ann in 1796) and was not a wife of 9-year-old Peter. That seems to leave John Harbert as her only potential spouse. John Harbert proved the deed by oath, not by affirmation. He was not behaving in a Friend-ly manner on the marital or legal fronts. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Herbert" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, January 25, 2008 12:42 AM Subject: Re: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] New member searching for family I think I'm the one you want to talk to. 3. I think I'm the one you want to talk to. My name is John Herbert, descendant of Peter(1784), last born son of Walter(1742). I live in Maryland. Other brothers were Walter(b. 1773), John((b.1769). A descendant of John is living in El Paso. Have you a given name for your gt gt gt gt grandfather's brother? The Walter you saw in the Quaker cemetery outside Newberry was probably Walter(1773); nearby would be his wife Ann Galbreath. The Walter (1742) who came from New Jersey had a falling out with the Quakers, and was dismissed from the Friends, so he and his wife Ann are buried somewhere else. John Herbert, 116 Stewart Dr, Maryland 21037, [email protected] Very glad to hear from you. I have lots for you if you want it. 3. Hello all! After taking up the mantlet of family historian, I came across a couple of family members who had moved from New Jersey to South Carolina and settled in the Newberry area. Being Quakers, I assumed (correctly) that they would be either buried there or related to some who are. I have already found Walter Herbert buried there, who is my great-great-great-great grandfathers' brother. Taking Mrs. Russells' suggestion, I would ask anyone else who subscribes to this newsletter to see if they have any information regarding the Herbert family that lived in Newberry from 1762 onwards. Any info you have would be extremely helpful to the cause. Anything I can do for everyone, please just let me know. Thanks! Sincerely, CPT Mark Herbert Fort Knox, Kentucky

    2. For the person who is wanting to know where they should fly in to SC to be near Newberry. Your best bet is Columbia, SC. It is close to Newberry. Also, there is a wonderful motel downtown on the square in Newberry. The Mayor's wife owns the motel. I can't think of the name, but it is one of the motels that everyone is familiar using. Very nice and very friendly. Charlotte is not too far from Newberry. To your benefit, the State Archives is in Columbia. It is a new building and very nice. IF you go to the website for the SC Archives, there is a map telling you how to get to the Archives in any direction you are coming from. Also the times and days they are open. Enjoy your visit to SC. Nora **************Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape. http://body.aol.com/fitness/winter-exercise?NCID=aolcmp00300000002489
