Hi everyone, I had time to kill in Northern Virginia yesterday and spent a couple of hours at the main Fairfax County library. They had a book called Hopewell Friends History. I jotted down the following certificates that were granted to Bush River. I believe these are all in Hinshaw's, but I thought I'd still send them along. I know it's not a complete list, but I was running out of time. 4 1 1768 Hannah Pugh & Children, 1 2 1768 Jos. Hollingsworth, Sarah Ruble & ch. Thank you all! I¹m a descendant of Cooks in Waynesville (grand daughter of George, son of Seth.) This is a very good solution, Robert, thank you! So, listers,.....if you want to reply to only the one person, or if you are including personal info in an email...click on FORWARD, type in the address, and then you will be sure that it only goes to the person you want. Judy and all, Regarding your email about checking the TO line to insure it goes to the appropriate person instead of the whole mail list (if that is what you intend in the first place). I hit the 'Forward" button (in my AOL mail program) and it opens an email with the TO: (blank...). One can then type the name of the person to receive the forwarded email along with their comments to that particular person or persons only. I don't know if this works with all email programs but it may be worth a try... i.e. Hit the Forward and type the persons name. I just tried it with my IncrediMail program also and it works the same way. I hope the List will forgive me for sticking my 2 cents worth in this, but I'm just trying to be helpful. I am rereading information from accumulated piles on The Thomas clan found in Bush River in the late 1700's and early 1800's. This is in my file labelled Thomas in Ohio. I hate admitting that I am sometimes sloppy, but I really want to pass along this paragraph to several of you....and I apologize that the paragraph has become unidentified over the years. It is probably from a Ohio county history....and I am guessing Miami County, Ohio...but it could also be Indiana. It is found on page 864 of the Biographical Sketches. I had labelled it #5, so somewhere there is a list of what I was looking at that day. But if I spend the time trying to find the list, you will never read the below. Of course, it is not a primary source....but it is interesting. Joseph Thomas, farmer and carpenter, PO WEst Milton, he was born in Clay Township, Montgomery Co. Ohio, March 4 1835, and is a son of Isaiah and Elizabeth (Cox) Thomas, who were born in South Carolina--hihs father, July 30, 1791, his mother Oct 2, 1795. Grandfather, John Thomas was born in South Carolina March 10, 1766, and was a son of Isaac and Mary (Davy) Thomas, who were also born in SC. John Thomas was married to Ann Pemberton. Elizabeth (Cox) Thomas, mother of our subject, was a daughter of David and Jane (Owen) Cox who were probably born in South Carolina. John Thomas, grandfather of our subject, came to Ohio in 1806 and settled in Warren County on the Little Miami River, where they resided a few years and then moved to Montgomery County, where they resided until their death. He died March 10, 1847. His wife departed this life July 22, 1840. They were the parents of four children, viz, John, Isaiah, George, and Ann, the three latter are deceased. Isaiah, father of our subject, came to Ohio with his parents, when a young man, remaining with them until his marriage. He as a farmer by occupation, and the land which he chose for his home was his dwelling-place for many years; he reared a family of eight children of whom six are living viz, David, Ann, Elijah, Susanna, Martha, and our subject. the deceased are James and Isaac. many generations ago, the Cox family lived in the moutain fastnesses of their Welsh home, and it is not postitively known where or in what locality they first settled in this country. Isaiah Thomas died May 8, 1862, his wife departed her life June 6, 1877. Our subject was reared on his father's farm on which he labored till his 21st year. On the 22nd of December 1855, he formed a matrimonial alliance with Miss Elizabeth, daughter of John E. and Susannah (Coppock) Pemberton, after his marriage he engaged in farming in Montgomery County for ten years, disposing of his farm he removed to hear Laura, Miami Co. but remained only a few monthsm when he sold out and purchased 56 (my copy is not perfect here....56 is my best guess) acres of land where he now resides . His land is all in a good state of cultivation and his farm buildings are superior in every particular. His land was entered by his wife's ancestors, in 1803, and is yet in the family connection. After he moved here, he cut down an apple tree which had been planted many years ago measuring nearly four feet in diameter. He has been much engaged in carpentering since he has made this his home, the work on the farm being performed by his son, who is....sorry that seems to be all that I copied. My excuse is that I still am not sure that this line connects with my Sarah Thomas McKinsey.....I did write at the bottom: 7 children: John, William, Emma, Clara, Francis, Sarah, Henrietta deceased....I suppose that that was a list of his children that would have shown up on pge 864. If I make it to Ohio this summer to buy tomatoes from Milton Cook, I'll try to read more of the county histories. They are lots of fun. I found a MAJOR breakthrough on my Elliott line while casually reading a county history from Indiana several years ago. Funny thing was that I was reading it for a buddy with a few extra minutes before my local LDS FHL closed for the day. She was getting ready to go to an Elmore reunion. I thought, hmmm, I'll just look to see if I can find anything to add to Roberta's reunion "stuff" on her husband's Elmore line. And there was Elliott info that I had read several times before right above it. But this time I had enough information to see that Joab Elliott was my Catherine Elliott McKinsey's BROTHER! Suddenly the information was EXTREMELY interesting. Gotta quit for the morning. marsha
On page 328 of Southern Quakers and Slavery begins a listing of Friends Meeting in the Southern States. In this listing you will find the Bush River Quarterly Meeting and those Meetings that comprised the Quarter The information also shows the date the Meetings were settled and the date that they may have been laid down. There is a brief description of the location of these Meetings. Again thanks so much for your good work. peace fFriend John Allen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judith F.
