I have never researched the Kelly's but I seem to have a lot of them in my database. My daughter's mother in law was a Kelly from Darke Co Ohio but she does not seem to think that her family could be related to the Bush River Quaker group. She does not seem very interested in genealogy so I have never pushed the issue but the grandkids like genealogy. Hi Vivian: It is my undering that many of the Bush River Quakers moved to Ohio. My Kelly direct line did not move to Ohio but understand that relatives of my Kelly's did. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Vivian Markley" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, December 02, 2008 10:03 AM Subject: Re: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Kelly descendants of SC BushriverIrishQuakers >I have never researched the Kelly's but I seem to have a lot of them in my > database. In the last few days I've added a good many new subscribers to the list because of their interest in our upcoming Dec 2008 Bush River Cemetery Newsletter. That newsletter will go out in the next few days. It will be sent via this list ([email protected]) In the meantime, I hope that the new subscribers will want to introduce themselves and their research interests to our list. We now have over 250 members, all of whom have an interest in the Bush River Quakers, their backgrounds, their families, their travels, etc. This is the best way to make contact with others who are interested in the Quaker families who at one time lived in Newberry, SC. Here's how to send a message: New (and old) members: to send a message to the list, you can simply "reply" to this message and state your interests. BUT PLEASE, if you hit reply instead of creating a new message, CHANGE THE SUBJECT LINE, that is, type over the "Welcome New subscribers." Put your family interests or brief question in the subject line so that we can all tell at a glance what the message is about. Or you can create a new message and send it to: [email protected] New members, I think you will find this one of the best groups ever for sharing information, ideas, and research clues. We've had many interesting exchanges here on the list. I personally have made lots of new friends and email pals, too. Please send us your interests and don't worry about receiving too many emails ....we have bursts of activity and weeks of Nothing! Remember, please.....CHANGE THE WORDING OF THE SUBJECT LINE WHEN YOU REPLY, except if your reply is actually about the subject. New members, Welcome! We hope to hear from you soon. Also, please forward this email on to others who might be interested in our free email list and have them write to me at [email protected] if they want to subscribe. Tried to send this info to Sally by email, but it was bounced back. She can go to the S.C. Department of Archives and click on the on-line info. Then put in "Miles, Charles". She will be able to see all the info they have about him. If she has trouble navigating this, let me know. Jean
I don't have a "Miles" but always good to read your !! Have to get back to doing some "work !!" In 1790, the Charles Miles on the Newberry Co SC census was listed in between people who were currently living on Cannon's Creek of the Broad River, around 4 miles east of Newberry Courthouse. This was more of a "Presbyterian neighborhood" than a "Quaker neighborhood" in 1790. Two other Charles Mileses of SC skipped the census in 1790. One of them lived on Turkey Creek in Chester Co. He was a Lt. under Col. Andrew Williamson from 1776, and filed a pension claim from Robertson Co TN in 1826 (therefore not the one who died in SC in 1811). The other was a J.P. in Union Co, had been a Major under Gen. Sumter. He purchased enormous amounts of land in Union Co. and points west during the post-war decades. You can find the locations of those with the SCDAH search engine at www.archivesindex.sc.gov. The county wills are online through that site too. Charles Miles "of Newberry Co." did not purchase land from the state. One of the three Isaac Miles households in SC in 1800 was in Union Co; he and his wife were both born 1774-84, had no children. He was "probably" the son of Maj. Charles Miles of Union Co. The younger Isaac Miles household in Newberry Co. in 1800 was exactly the same: he and wife born 1774-84, no children. The 1800 Newberry census was reported in semi-alphabetical order, rather than by neighborhood, so gives no information about where the various Miles households were located. The size of the Charles Miles household in Newberry in 1790 is one clue that he is the one you're seeking. Another possible clue is that Martin Hollenback/Hollenbeck/Hollenbaugh lived in Newberry Co from the 1780's, on King's Creek of the Enoree River in the northwestern part of the county. King's Creek was the site of another colonial Presbyterian congregation. There was nowhere else in SC for Isaac Miles to have located a wife with that surname in ~1800. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Furuiye Sally" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, November 18, 2008 4:58 PM Subject: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Charles MILES b. about 1750 d. 1811 Searching for information about Charles MILES born about 1750 and died in 1811. His wife died in 1816. He had 14 daughters and one son, Isaac who was born about 1779. Isaac married Rossannah Hollenbeck and they had at least one son named Martin b. 1800. They may have been Quakers at the Bush River MM. Family stories say they were born near Charleston, but I can't find any reference to them there. Charles MILES shows up at a head of family in the 1790 census in Newberry District. He has 3 males over the age of 16, 1 male under 16 and 10 females, so this makes me think he is the right one. Any help greatly appreciated
Samuel and Sarah MILES of the Index of Wills for SC are in Newberry Co, SC. I meant to mention there is a John MARTIN who is on a different deed for JOHN MILES of Chester Co, SC; this record appears to be from the same MILES family, but Charles is not mentioned. The land for all 3-4 deeds for MILES is on sides of Turkey Creek on the Broad River, and the reason I believe they are of the same families. Here is a record with a Charles MILES. "Page 92: Deed made 5 Aug 1782 bet. John MILES of Camden Dist. of one part and CHARLES MILES of the other part. For one thousand and lbs. pd. by CHARLES MILES do grant 138 acres in Craven County on north side of Broad River on a branch of Turkey Creek being part of 200 acres granted to James MILES. Wit: William GIVIN, william MILES, Richard MILES. Signed: John MILES." I looked in my Newberry will book, but no Charles. Also checked Annals of Newberry, but no Charles; however, there are other MILES names. A couple of wills in my Index of SC for Samuel MILES and another for Sarah MILES. The wills are not in my will book for Newberry County. In my Quaker book for SC, there are MILES, but no Charles. Do you think the above deed could be your Charles MILES? Hi Friends: all my genealogy subscriptions say "you need a blog!" so I created one for our Bush River Quakers group. As far as I can determine, one advantage of a blog is that you can post photos, which we can't do on our rootsweb list. All you bloggers out there, let us know what other terrific things that we can now do our our Bush River Quakers blog. The address is: http://bushriverquakers.blogspot.com/ from a novice blogger, JudyR
Thanks, Joyce, that's what I'd always assumed, but I thought I'd check to make sure I wasn't off base. Thanks, Judy. I'm assuming it was August because it was 1765, more than a decade after when the Quakers were supposed to start using the Gregorian calendar.
