    2. Hi All, I am new to the list, and wanted to chime in and say I am researching Taylors mainly from Newberry SC and surrounding areas, but also, Singley, and Kinard. Mainly my interest of course lies in the Quaker Taylors of Newberry and surrounding areas though. Would love to hear from someone who has even one Taylor in their line between the years 1780-1850. 1. Re: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Edwards, Mote, Bennett, Chamberlain, Carrier
    2. Michael Reck
    3. There was a mass migration of Quakers from that area (SC) into Miami County Ohio starting very early 1800s. One reason was the slave issue. Ohio from it's beginning in 1804 has always been a free state. These early Quakers came north over the mountains, then followed the Great Miami River north from the Ohio River. Then, from the Dayton area, up the west-branch of the Great Miami (now known as The Stillwater River). These Quakers settled heavily in what is now Union Township, and the south half of what is now Newton Township of Miami County. That was before Miami County became a county, which took place in 1807. At first this area was a part of The North-West Territory then part of Hamilton County, then part of Montgomery County, and after 16 Jan 1807 it was Miami County Ohio. Later both Darke and Shelby counties were formed from parts of Miami Co. Soon after the Quakers came the Brethren (Dunkers/Tunkers) who did about the same thing, except they mostly came from Pennsylvania, down the Ohio River, them followed the Great Miami River north. These Brethren mostly took up land in Montgomery Co (as did some of the Quakers) then on up the west-branch of the Miami River (Stillwater) and settled north of the Quakers, which mostly placed the Brethren in northern Newton Twp and Newberry Twp. They too, like the Quakers, were opposed to slavery and war. The Quakers and the Brethren got along well with somewhat similar beliefs. Between the two (Quakers and Brethren) they settled the early wilderness of western Miami County Ohio. This was all before the first Miami County census of 1820. 1. Re: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Family of David and Dorcas Mote- MOTE family, what a find for a genealogist
    2. Audrey E Pool
    3. Hi, Anyone with the MOTE family would do well to purchase the book mentioned below. Also, the person who did the research on the MOTE family, did an exhaustive search and compilation. There are maps in the book, not only for SC, but VA. When I checked my Amelia will book, only Jonathan appears on the estate settlement of George CABINESS, but the people named in the SC record are there: OSBORN for one. I found Jonathan MOTE in one of my four Amelia Co, VA books, but I don't dispute the findings of the researcher. I also found 3-4 in my Bristol Parish Register; David's birth in 1733 for one. According to the SC book named, there should be more. Source: Bristol Parish Register: "David Son of Jonathan & Sarah MOTE, born 13th ap' 1733, Bap 20th Oct." I didn't find a single MOTE in my Pr Geo Co, VA books, but the researcher is too good to make a mistake on where they were. He must have gone to the VA counties for his searches. And, in my Laurens Co, SC will book, Audrey is spelled "Ordery," Jonathan Jr's wife. All of my southern friends and families call me Ordery. My name is Audrey and the researcher for the MOTE family spelled it correctly in the genealogy. Just expressing my opinion for an excellent researcher; wish he would do more family histories. I have no information on her family; she had at least seven children, all baptized in Old St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Philadelphia. Tom Key

    1. [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] New Member 12-02-08 (George Kelly)
    2. George Kelly
    3. I am a new member & interested in tracing my surname, 5th Ggrandfather Walter Kelly who arrived from Ireland with a Quaker Group in 1751. On borad the same ship was a Samuel & Timothy Kelly but I don't know their kin, brothers, cousins, father/son etc. Walter Kelley/Kelly (spelling seems to depend on the author) had a brother William because in 1773 both were killed & scalped near present day Cedar Grove, WV. William is not mentioned (in my records) as being onboard the same ship & may have come to the colonies earlier, not sure. I have that Walter married Elizabeth (last name unknown) but another GEDCOM I've seen has that his wife's name was Sadie (last name unknown). Walter & family leased for a year then sold their SC (350 acres, surveyed 1754 by Mr. Wyly) property to John Pain (Payne) in 1759 & moved to Pittsylvania County VA where a son James Kelly was born (My 4th Ggrandfather) Not long after Walter was killed the family returned to Kershaw County SC where James married (name of wife unknown) & raised 7 children as he stated in his Rev. War Pension Application. But he did Not mention the gender nor name of his wife or children. >From SC to TN: My 3Ggrandfather was William Thomas Kelly b. 1787 in SC (his wife was Rutha Alexander) raised 12 children in Perry County TN. Starting with William Thomas Kelly to present I have documentation. BUT prior to William Thomas Kelly is only MOST PROBABLE as to my ancestors. I am looking for documentation that William Thomas Kelly's father was James Kelly & his father Walter Kelly of the Bush River Quakers. Supplementing my search I have a Y-DNA file & am looking for male Kelley/Kelly descendants with a matching Y-DNA profile. All help appreciated. My email address is (all lower case) GLKELLY at JSCOMM dot NET ( [email protected] ) Thank you. George .

    3. Hi, Kathryn. I think you'd very much enjoy reading Jesse Hogan Motes III and Margaret Peckham Motes, Laurens and Newberry Counties South Carolina: Saluda and Little River Settlements 1749-1775. Neighborhood Maps, and Abstracts of Colonial Surveys and Memorials of Land Titles, Including a Case Study, Jonathan Mote 1727-1763, Migration to Little River (Greenville SC: Southern Historical Press, Inc., 1994). The region covered by the book is to the west of the main Quaker settlement (Scotch and Palmetto Branch Creeks of the Bush River), but includes the residences of many members of the Bush River MM. The case study of the Mote family and all their inlaws is 80 pages of the book. It includes land and legal records, meeting records, tax and estate documents, etc., all with complete source references. The section on David Mote (1733-1817) includes his records from Prince George Co VA, Orange Co NC, Laurens/Newberry Co SC, Wrightsborough GA, and Miami Co OH. This is a particularly complete reference collection for anyone researching the Mote(s) family, and also informative about the other settler families who lived along the Saluda River in southeastern Laurens Co and southwestern Newberry Co SC. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kathryn E.
