    3. We may be cousins in there somewhere. My grandmother's brother Azariah Stewart married Elizabeth Pearson descendent of Benjamin and Margaret Evans. Then your Anna McClure is the granddaughter of Samuel McClure and Mary Stewart. I have not been able to prove it but I think your Mary Stewart had a brother John who is the grandfather of Azariah Stewart above and my grandmother. My Stewart's are buried in Wright Cemetery in Shelby Co along with the McClures and Julians (my grandmother Stewart's maiden name) Also, Margery Pearson (mother was a McClure)is buried in the Thomas Cemetery in Troy. These folks lived in both Miami and Shelby Co. Do you live in Riverside that is close to Dayton? I grew up in Miami Co but now live in Springfield. I would love to share info. I am still trying to fill in some of these people. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Michael Reck Sent: Tuesday, December 02, 2008 6:16 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] PEARSON I am looking for PEARSONS, EVANS, and MCCLURE. 2. Hi I have enjoyed being a member of this list for a while now and am looking forward to your Cemetery Newsletter. I have been researching John Pearson b. abt. 1730 in Philadelphia and d. bet 1790-1800 in Orangeburgh District. He and his family came to Newberry District in 1750 with his father-in-law Paul Williams and family. They settled on Second Creek. John and Paul were Baptists and not Quakers. I am seeking John and Paul's roots in Pennsylvania. It may be possible that John was a Quaker turned Baptist. Also researching Davis family. Seeking info on a family, some of whom left Orangeburgh/Barnwell for Newberry in abt mid 1700's. Harmon, Asa, Van, William, Rezin. Who was their father? 1. Re: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] what is the origin of the name Bush River in SC?
    2. Harriet Imrey
    3. The origin of the name is uncertain, and likely to stay that way. References to "Bush Creek" appeared from 1749, "Bush River" a bit later and less frequently. Creeks were often named for early landowners along them, but the waterway called "Bush" had its name 20 years before a Bush family lived anywhere near it. Backcountry creeks were named for natural features too, e.g., the multiple Beaverdam Creeks near Bush River, Mudlick Creek, Brushy Fork, Sandy Run, etc. Bush Creek/River was not considered a "navigable" waterway (the SC rules for surveying plats were different for navigable and non-navigable streams). Maybe too many bushes or brushy undergrowth for easy boat travel? The colonial surveyors and mapmakers decided whether to call a stream a creek or a river depending entirely upon how long it was, without regard to how wide or how deep. A surveyor in a wet season/year would find water flowing freely from headwaters well to the north of the mouth on the Saluda River, so it was "Bush River". In a dry season, the upper headwaters dried up, the stream was shorter, so it was "Bush Creek". ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, December 02, 2008 2:01 PM Subject: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] what is the origin of the name Bush River in SC?

    3. Just for the heck of it, I am going to see if Martin TAYLOR has any connection to the KINARDS or LAGRONES in my Newberry Court records. I don't especially like Court records because they don't give much information; however, they do say they were there...and involved. I see Martin TAYLOR in the index as well as LAGRONES and KINARDS. We don't have any of these families in direct line, but POOL-RHODES intermarried with them. 1. [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Whitten Family in Newberry & Laurens Cos.
    2. Virginia Alexander
    3. My ancestor was John Whitten (also spelled Whiten), who made his will in Laurens Co., SC, 3 July 1828, witnessed by John F. Kern, Jr., Alfred A. Kern and John Frederick Kern, Sr. He named his chidren: Lyndsey Whitten,, John Whitten, Jr., Sally Henly, Anne Jacks, Fanny Ray and Susannah Kennedy. Executors were Lyndsey Whitten and Claxton Ray. John and his wife Pheby are buried in Phillip's Cemetery on Duncan's Creek. John had bought land on the creek from Robert Whitten in 1793. Is John the man of that name on the 1781 tax list of Washington Co., PA? And is he the John Whitten who was a Minute Man in S.C. during the American Revolution? Welcome correspondence on this family. 1. Re: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Looking for family of ancestors David and Dorcas Mote
    2. I would be remiss to not point those interested in Bush River to the book "Charity Cook, A Liberated Woman" by Algie I Newlin. Sadly the book is out of print. Charity was my gggggggmother. At least 50 pages of this book are devoted to people and events at Bush River Meeting. Charity and Issac Cook were among the original ones there and their eventual migration to Ohio and Illinois is well documented. One excerpt from the book and the 12 mo, 26th day of1772 minutes of the meeting say" the ministering Friends of this meeting - Jonathan Taylor, Mary Pearson and Charity Cook -----in order to recommend them to the Quartely Meeeting and appoint them, David Jenkins and David Mote to inquire, make their report to our next mo. meeting--------------and if they find nothing to obstruct, to deliver the certificates at our next mo. meeting" etc. Thus Charity became a "recorded minister" like her mother, Rachel Wright. The book documents the marriage of their children to the Newlin, Furnas, Harvey, Herbert, Pearson, Lewis, Hollingsworth and Henderson families among many more families referenced herein. Charity and Issac Cook lived at Bush River for 43 years and then immigrated to Ceasers Creek, OH. Howard W Cook ************** Life should be easier. So should your homepage. Try the NEW AOL.com.
