    3. I have quiet a few Sarah Edwards in the line. It seems to be a popular name in that time frame. I have a few that I have no husbands for, though. I have information back to a Joseph Edwards Born: around 1660, Lambourn(e) Woodlands, Berkshire Parish, Wiltshire, England??? Married about 1694, a Mary Hickman, Born: 17 November, 1665 Lambourn(e) Woodlands Berkshire Parish, Wiltshire, England Died: 1733. We have not been able to find anything further about him. His son Joseph Born: abt 1695, Concord Chester (Now Delaware) County Pa. Married before 1741,a Sarah Born: before 1699, Died: unk, in Hampshire Co. Va. We have heard a couple different last names for her (Chamberlain, Nalley) but no proof either way. The Edwards I am looking for in Newberry County, is a Samuel Edwards Born: 27 May, 1741 in Berkeley Co, VA Died: abt 1799 in Newberry County, SC. He married a Hannah Born: Unk, place unk, Died: after 1799, place unk. I know they had 5 kids, 3 sons, David, Charles, Thomas and 2 daughters Sarah and Ann/Nancy birth dates unk. I know very little about all the kids but David, who is my 5th grandfather. Also, I think you can see a list of burials at www.findagrave.com if you look for the Bush River listing with 76 citations. 3. Judy, Is there a listing of the families that lived in this area and is there a listing of the people buried in the cemetery? Linda -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Judith F. Russell Sent: Wednesday, December 03, 2008 2:24 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] December 2008 NEWSLETTER: Bush River SCQuaker Cemetery Bush River SC Quaker Cemetery Newsletter December 2008 WELCOME NEW LIST MEMBERS We recently added many new members to our list of newsletter and email recipients and we welcome each and every one. Ours is undoubtedly the best group on rootsweb! Besides being so informative, our list is unique because we know that, since our ancestors were all Bush River Quakers or their families, they certainly knew each other and worshiped together at the Bush River Meeting House. They were friends, neighbors, and business associates in Newberry. They even married each other! In addition, many of them probably traveled together to Newberry down the Great Wagon Road from Philadelphia and points north. Many of them left Newberry together, too. At last May's Homecoming in Newberry we heard the story of their hardships and saw the actually remnants of the Great Wagon Road on which they traveled. In addition to the exchange of Bush River Quaker family information, our group is dedicated to the preservation and maintenance of the Bush River Quaker Cemetery on Dennis Dairy Road in Newberry, SC. We have completed the payment for another year of professional maintenance by Newberry Lawn Care owned by James Folk. Mr. Folk visited with us during our Homecoming and helped us with the installation of the Visitor's Bench outside the perimeter of the Cemetery. Maintenance is entirely supported by the proceeds from our book "Historic Bush River Quaker Cemetery, Newberry, South Carolina," and by individual donations. For several years now, we have achieved our goal of having the Cemetery accessible every day of the year and we hope to continue for many years to come. (Book sales information is available at www.bushriverquakers.org or email to [email protected] ) SPECIAL DONATION Recently we received notice of a donation toward our Cemetery Maintenance work from the Jay Family Association, approved at their meeting Board Meeting in October. They wrote: The Board discussed and approved the recommendation of a $100 donation to the Bush River Monthly Meeting Burial Grounds in South Carolina where it is probable that William Jay Sr. is buried. We are very grateful for this donation. A CEMETERY MANAGEMENT PLAN Ann Crowley and I recently had a very interesting meeting with Janine Duncan, the Historic Preservationist in charge of restoring an historic cemetery on the University of Georgia campus. She gave us many, many ideas to work on, including the most basic - we need to develop a management plan for the cemetery. A management plan would give all us an overview of what happens monthly and yearly at the cemetery as well as help us develop some guidelines about future work there. In the new year we hope to develop our plan and to investigate some of Ms. Duncan's other suggestions which included ways to find help to investigate the possibility of further burial sites and with developing a priority list for repairs. Your help is needed on this project: Please send your suggestions of the things (large or small) that you would like to see our group accomplish at the cemetery. You can email to the list or to me or Ann Crowley ([email protected] ) Send anything you've ever thought of, since we want our "to-do" to be as inclusive as possible. For some good reading on Historic Cemetery Preservation see: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/hal_mhc_shpo_Cemetery_Guide_105082_7.pdf HOMECOMING 2010 We are already developing some tentative plans for our proposed 2nd Homecoming in Newberry, Summer 2010. We are taking all of the suggestions we got after our fabulous weekend this summer and working out their possible implementation. One thing we hope to do for sure is have time for GROUP MEETINGS on the various BUSH RIVER FAMILIES. A possible site for our family group meetings might be at the new Library, set to open very soon. I think we'd all like a tour of the new site also so that we can see what it will mean for our research. One suggested theme is for our 2010 meeting is "Newberry and the Revolution." Another idea is mapping where our ancestors came from and where they went after leaving Newberry. Now is the time to send us any idea that you might want to implemented at the Homecoming! Send theme ideas, meeting events, day trips, research venues, day trips to research venues....etc., etc. At this point, the more ideas we have, the better we will know what people are interested in. 1. [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] December 2008 NEWSLETTER: Bush River SC Quaker Cemetery
    2. Judith F. Russell
    3. Bush River SC Quaker Cemetery Newsletter December 2008 WELCOME NEW LIST MEMBERS We recently added many new members to our list of newsletter and email recipients and we welcome each and every one. At last May’s Homecoming in Newberry we heard the story of their hardships and saw the actually remnants of the Great Wagon Road on which they traveled. Mr. Folk visited with us during our Homecoming and helped us with the installation of the Visitor’s Bench outside the perimeter of the Cemetery. Maintenance is entirely supported by the proceeds from our book “Historic Bush River Quaker Cemetery, Newberry, South Carolina,” and by individual donations. She gave us many, many ideas to work on, including the most basic – we need to develop a management plan for the cemetery. A management plan would give all us an overview of what happens monthly and yearly at the cemetery as well as help us develop some guidelines about future work there. In the new year we hope to develop our plan and to investigate some of Ms. Duncan’s other suggestions which included ways to find help to investigate the possibility of further burial sites and with developing a priority list for repairs. Your help is needed on this project: Please send your suggestions of the things (large or small) that you would like to see our group accomplish at the cemetery. You can email to the list or to me or Ann Crowley ([email protected] ) Send anything you’ve ever thought of, since we want our “to-do” to be as inclusive as possible. I think we’d all like a tour of the new site also so that we can see what it will mean for our research. One suggested theme is for our 2010 meeting is “Newberry and the Revolution.” Another idea is mapping where our ancestors came from and where they went after leaving Newberry. Now is the time to send us any idea that you might want to implemented at the Homecoming! Send theme ideas, meeting events, day trips, research venues, day trips to research venues....etc., etc. At this point, the more ideas we have, the better we will know what people are interested in. We are also definitely looking for VOLUNTEERS for the 2010 Homecoming Event, even among those who don’t know whether or not they will be attending. Just let us know if you would like to help and we will find a job for you! One thing that would be great would be to have a volunteer or volunteers for TEAM CAPTAINS FOR EACH OF OUR BUSH RIVER FAMILIES. 3. There may be a lot of us who are descendants of David and Dorcas Mote. Have you researched your Edwards lines? I have long been searching for information about Sarah Edwards, 1st wife of Nathaniel Carter Jr. m 1769. His second wife was "Mrs. Jane Edwards" m. 1791 and a third wife was Jane Collins m. 1798. They were in Orange Co. NC by 1758. I was able to purchase this book for $9.00 from Amazon.com, which also sells used books. Other sites to try are Craig's List, E-Bay, and antique/genealogy book dealers. Sadly the book is out of print. Charity was my gggggggmother. At least 50 pages of this book are devoted to people and events at Bush River Meeting. Charity and Issac Cook were among the original ones there and their eventual migration to Ohio and Illinois is well documented. One excerpt from the book and the 12 mo, 26th day of1772 minutes of the meeting say" the ministering Friends of this meeting - Jonathan Taylor, Mary Pearson and Charity Cook -----in order to recommend them to the Quartely Meeeting and appoint them, David Jenkins and David Mote to inquire, make their report to our next mo. meeting--------------and if they find nothing to obstruct, to deliver the certificates at our next mo. meeting" etc. Thus Charity became a "recorded minister" like her mother, Rachel Wright. The book documents the marriage of their children to the Newlin, Furnas, Harvey, Herbert, Pearson, Lewis, Hollingsworth and Henderson families among many more families referenced herein. Charity and Issac Cook lived at Bush River for 43 years and then immigrated to Ceasers Creek, OH. Howard W Cook ************** Life should be easier. So should your homepage. Try the NEW AOL.com. 1. Re: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] BURTON
    2. Gerre Byrd
    3. Folks, I'm new to the list. I have no reason to think the BURTONS were Quakers; but after 37 years of research and not being able to identify my great grandfather's parents, I'm reaching out in every direction. Jeremiah aka James Jeremiah, J. J., Jerry, Jarat BURTON was b: SC 1814-1818 (according to all census records). He married Millie MOORE in 1836, Rabun Co., GA, purchased land in Rabun Co. (and some in Ellijay, Macon Co., NC, but lost it), and remained in Rabun Co., GA until his death in 1902. Millie MOORE's parents were in Rabun Co., GA, but had come from Macon Co., NC where her grandparents resided most of the time until her grandfather, John Parker MOORE, died there in 1852. They are said to be in some Quaker Records (VA). Millie had died abt 1845, so Jeremiah married Edy RAMEY. After she died abt 1880, he married Sarah JUSTICE whose first marriage was to a GILES. DNA has pointed us to John of Cobbs who married Elizabeth FOWLER. Reasoning has led us to Nathaniel BURTON of Newberry, then Edgefield. Is it possible there were BURTONS among the BUSH RIVER QUAKERS?? Quakers in my line include: ECHOLS & TERRY. My line left VA for OH. Anxious to hear from anyone who may have a clue, suggestions, or knowledge. Gerre Byrd

    3. I have been searching for the parents of William Pearson, born October 5, 1777 in SC.  Because of his migration from SC to OH to IN where he died March 14, 1856 in Deer Creek Township, Miami County, Indiana, I have been searching in hopes that I will find a link to the Bush River Quakers.  I have been seeing links to the Benjamin Pearson who was listed as an early Quaker settler but have not seen anything on the William Pearson who was also listed as an early settler at Bush River.  Does anyone have a connection to William? This William could be my Williams's Father.   Diane

    1. [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Motes Book
    2. Just to add to the above information about the Motes book, I believe it is for sale at Books on Main in Newberry, S.C. I think that was the place I got my copy. The shop owner is Randy Berry, and he is so nice. Carries a lot of books for the Newberry Genealogists as well as other wonderful books. Worth calling him.

    3. I have a Yates Hollingsworth married to a Nancy Mote. I collect Hollingsworth as it seems one might be one of my grandmothers a way back the line. And I have an Aaron Furnas married a Lucy Mote. These look like they are back in the early 1700,s and Quaker. The Mote's that I have that married the Byrkett's and Shearers in Miami Co are more likely to be Brethren. I lived in Pleasant Hill back in the 1970's and one of my girl friends was an Elaine Mote. I moved and lost touch. Do you have " Quakers in the South Carolina Backcountry Wateree and Bush River" by Heiss? This is definitely this group and he talks about Charity at length. If you do not I would be glad to send you a copy -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, December 02, 2008 6:34 PM To: [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: Re: [SC-BUSHRIVERQUAKERS] Looking for family of ancestors David andDorcas Mote I would be remiss to not point those interested in Bush River to the book "Charity Cook, A Liberated Woman" by Algie I Newlin.
