The booklet, by Mary Frances Sawyer Webster, that I copied in the Currituck Co., NC library stated: "John Sawyer died 22 December 1713, and his will is listed as Albemarle Co, (which would be later called Pasquotank County). Like all Wills, before 1760, in the State of North Carolina, it is filed with the Secretary of State's Office. John's will named sons John, Thomas, Robert, and Solomon. He gave each a plantation. He also named Charles Grandy, as his grandson, and his wife's name was Jean (at his death)." The same booklet states: " Thomas Sawyer, of Pasquotank, died on 19 July 1920, and named sons Caleb, Stephen, Thomas and Richard. Daughters were Mary, Ann, and Hannah Sawyer, and his wife Dancy/Nancy McDowell. Ancestors of Caleb believe John, who died in 1713, was the father of "their" Thomas, but that was impossible, as in 1730 a Thomas Sawyer sold land to Charles Sawyer, stating that it was left to him by his father, John. It was signed by Thomas and John. (John was the son of John, and did not die until 1743.) Also, John who died in 1713, listed a Thomas in his will and he would not have named two living sons, Thomas. It is to be noted that John did not name Henry, either, in his will. A local noted historian and author referred to the donation of church land, by Thomas, who was the first cousin of Caleb. Obviously, he knew the "original John" and the "original Thomas" were brothers, which in turn made Thomas (son of John) and Caleb (son of Thomas) first cousins. It is my belief, when I found the 1720 Will of Thomas, of Pasquotank, naming his sons, it helped in sorting out the original Sawyers into three direct lineage's. John, Thomas and Henry were brothers. The Will of Thomas, d. 1720, is not listed in any of the North Carolina Will Books that I have come across. I found this Will in the North Carolina Historical and Genealogical Register." For anyone not familiar with the "North Carolina Historical and Genealogical Register", it is a three volume set of books written by J. R. B. Hathaway in 1901, 1902, 1903. Hope this helps.
