My Sawyer's (French Canadian) had there name spelled Sawyer, Chevrier, Chayet, Cherrier, and Sayer - All at one church in Northeastern NY! I'm convinced that they joined the Witness Protection Program after 1860 - Poof they disappeared! I am not very familiar with the dit names or how it works for sure and the difference in the name in French vursis English either. My Sawyer is from born Montreal Que. in about 1823 and she went home to parents I assume at Hogansburg, New York. Even had her on some census but not enough yet. So I would say just keep trying.
