    3. Belle, I am interested in your Macoupin County connections. I have a ggggrandaunt Martha Harrison Robertson who moved to Macoupin County, Il., from Butler County, Al., with six of her youngest children after her husband died during the WBS. I think her grandfather or greatgrandfather Moses Justice and his family were the reason she moved so far north, but I still haven't solved that mystery. Do you research any Justices or Harrisons?I know that the Thorntons who were in North Carolina also moved to Macoupin County, a family connected to the Robertsons. The Sawyer I research moved to Monroe County, Wiley Sawyer, son of Elkanah and Mariam Belk Sawyer. Elkanah is the son of John and Priscilla McPherson/Keel? Sawyer. They were in Edgefield, N.Carolina, after moving from Pasquotank, N.C. Would like to hear from anyone who researches this family. 1. Re: [SAWYER] Sawyer ancestors Pasquotank, NC area
    2. Belle, Thanks for responding. John, Thomas, Richard and Thomas are Sawyers that we think we are related to, but we cannot make the paper trail connect. My earliest ancestor, that we can prove, was John Sawyer who showed up in Edgefield District, SC, near Batesburg about 1770. He bought and sold land in Duplin County in 1762 and 1769. He also sold land in Onslow County in 1757. His neighbors in Edgefield District all came from the Pasquotank area, we don't think that is a coincidence, we think that John and Priscilla came there to be reunited with friends and family. Several people have worked a long time trying to make the connection to the Sawyers in the Pasquotank area but have been unable to prove it. There is a company, Family Tree DNA, that only does genealogy DNA work. They only map the Y chromosome, which is passed from father to son to grandson and so on, with no appreciable change. Thus they can take a saliva sample from two or more people and tell if they have a common ancestor, they can't tell who that ancestor is, but how many generations back he was. At this point we feel this may be the only way to prove that we do indeed have a direct link to the Sawyers in the Pasquotank area. Family Tree DNA has created their "Surname Project" so that unknown people of the same surname can have their test run and compare the results with other participants to see if they indeed are related to a common ancestor. In this way a theory can be proved or disproved, allowing the researcher to work harder to prove a paper trail or forget that theory and move on to another. The Sawyer Surname Project is open to any male Sawyer worldwide, if you were to participate there is no telling how many unknown Sawyer branches you might find that you are related to, our branch alone could bring in approximately 15,000 names. I have initiated the "Sawyer Surname Project" thus I will be the group administrator (the worker, the clearing house), I assure you that I will receive no monetary gain for this, only the genealogy research benefit. My immediate goal is to convince several male Sawyers, with a direct ancestral connection to the original Sawyers who settled in the Pasquotank area, to join in this project, but I certainly anticipate Sawyers worldwide to join in and benefit. I apologize for the length, but feel that I have only one chance to interest you. If you are not interested, would you please pass this message along to some relative that might be. Please check out their web site for further info and details: www.familytreedna.com It's a relatively small investment for the untold doors that might be opened, and your privacy is assured. If you would like to contact me direct I will try to answer whatever I can. Sincerely, Robert R. Sawyer rs4147@aol.com "Sawyer" Project Administrator
