My line has a Thomas born ca 1613? and there was a John Sawyer also. This family was listed in early early North Carolina, but almost right on the VA line----by the Great Dismal Swamp. I have searched incessantly for the immigrant Sawyer, but it is possible that he moved around a bit before settling. Somehow I think these two huge branches of family must be connected. What think you? Were there any migrations south in the earliest days that you know of?

Arcel, thank you for the offer. Here goes: My greatgrandmother was Mary Matilda Holt (1864-1955). Her parents were Thomas C. Holt and Mary Matilda Sawyer. He was reputed to be a doctor. The Holt family home is just north of the Va./NC line on highway 168. MMHolt was born in that house, so she was born in Va. She married Joseph Bailey and they lived in the St. Brides area of what is now Chesapeake VA, but I believe Dr. Holt's medical practice was in Currituck County, NC somewhere. Mary Matilda Sawyer would have been born no later than 1830, since her daughter MMHolt was born 1864. Her father was Daivd Temple Sawyer. Her mother was Mary Matilda Lamb (1808-1903). That is all I have on my Sawyer line, which is why it is a little frustrating. My father told me that as a child he used to go and stay at Tull's Creek in Currituck County, NC, with his relatives. My dad was born in 1915, and I am sure he spent a lot of time with his grandmother MMHolt, whom I suppose would have had Sawyer relatives on her mother's side in the Tull's Creek area. I have lots of info on my Lamb line. They arrived in the Mass Bay Colony with governor Winthrop in 1630 and a greatgrandson, Thomas Lamb, migrated to Currituck Co. NC in the 1730's. There are a bunch of Lamb's in NC, but I am not related to many of them because my Lamb line was a transplant. Thomas Lamb's son Gideon was a Colonel in the NC Line. I would love it if you can connect my MMSawyer and her father David Temple Sawyer to anyone. Most families trace surname lines, but we have a Mary Matilda line. Mary Matilda Lamb > Mary Matilda Sawyer > Mary Matilda Holt > Mary Matilda Bailey > Evelyn Lassiter > Mary Matilda Powell. Doubt that there will be anymore. My grandmother broke the chain and then my Aunt Evelyn tried to restart it. Would love to have a little info on MMSawyer to fill in. Thanks for your interest. jay ----- Original Message ----- From: "Arcel Sawyer" <searching3@nc.rr.com> To: <SAWYER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, February 04, 2005 4:56 AM Subject: Re: [SAWYER] Sawyers-origins, those in New Hampshire > Jay I have quite a bit of info on the Sawyers from 1690s thru about 1740s > in > Eastern N.C. > E mail me with the beginning of your line, maybe I have some info. > Arcell Sawyer > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Jay Lassiter" <jaylassiter@cox.net> > To: <SAWYER-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Thursday, February 03, 2005 10:01 PM > Subject: Re: [SAWYER] Sawyers-origins, those in New Hampshire > > >> Hi. hi! i was told that in eleanor's book, the father of joseph clark sawyer was joseph sawyer. his mother was susan. i have found this man in the 1850 census as joseph, but in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census, he is listed as josiah. would someone check her book and see if you can locate a josiah sawyer who was also married to a susan in 1860, he was in sanbornton, 1870 and 1880 in tilton. he and his wife lived into their 80's at least. also, it appears that joseph clark and apphia plummer had a child before she died-isaline, born march 1850. she is then in the 1860 and 1870 census with her grandparents. if eleanor is coming out with another edition, perhaps this information could be passed along? thank you, amy

Al, Elbridge Gerry Sawyer and his wife Alice E. Tourtellotte had at least six children that I know of. Helen Jane Sawyer was my grandmother. She was born 25 Sep 1904, and will be included in the updated version of the Sawyer Book. Her siblings include Raymond L. Sawyer, Omar E. Sawyer, Rena E. Sawyer, Leon Leroy Sawyer and Anna S. Sawyer. The last two I have no information on. I was emailed by the author of the Sawyer Families of New England, and she gave me the information that I have. Also, Helen J. Sawyer married John Tweedie. So, I guess down the line somewhere we are kin,,,lol. If there is anything I can help you with on this line,,,please let me know. I am always glad to share. Your line is very interesting Brenda. I don't see Helen Jane listed under Elbridge Gerry II. Was she the daughter born in 1896? Does the family still have members in the Woodstock area? I also am from William and then Stephen (we share the early Quaker history) followed by Stephen (MA), Bitfield (MA-NH), Betfield (NH), Thomas(NH), Meshack Weare (NH), Arthur Weare (NH), Allan Weare (NH), Aldrich Weare (NH-MA) I would be interested in hearing more.
