For sometime, I have researched my families that went from N. C. to Macoupin, Illinois. My ggggrandparents Nathaniel and Amanda Blakely Robertson lived in what is now Laurens County and Edgefield County, N.C. They were closely associated with the Elkenah Sawyer family that eventually moved to Butler County, Al. Nathaniel's grandson Nathaniel Robertson married Martha Harrison. After Nathaniel died during the WBS, Martha moved to Macoupin, Illinois from Butler County with six of their smaller children. In my research, I have found related Thorntons who moved from Edgefield to Macoupin, also. I do not have a John B. Sawyer nor any of his children in my data, but I suspect he is related to John Sawyer, born in 1735., in Pasquotank, N.C. This John is the father of Elkanah Sawyer whose line married into my Alabama Robertson family. If you recognize any of these names, please write to me. My earliest Sawyer is Colonist William Sawyer whose grandson John Sawyer, born in ca 1735, lived in Pasquotank, N.C.
Have you looked at the "family book" that connects with the Shannonhouse name. This deals with one of the first Sawyer families showing up in N. C. late 1600s and I believe died in early 1700s. Part of this family went into Illinois. I am sorry it has been a long time since I worked on this line but I believe the book is called "The House of Shannon" and written by Edna Shannonhouse. If I am wrong about the author, sorry, been quite a few years. I often wonder where the B. comes from in this name? At the Linneus Town Offices there is a birth record for Isaac S. Sawyer. It states that "Isaac S. Sawyer" was born on 3 May 1869 to "Orvill L. and Nancy J. Sawyer". Isaac's middle name was Sterritt which is his mother's maiden name. His father was Orville Leonard Sawyer. Orville's parents were Isaac Sawyer and Eunice Bither. I believe Orville's father was Daniel Sawyer. If so, then his sister was Rachel Sawyer who married John Shields and also raised a family in Linneus. I descend from this line. Eunice's parents were Benjamin Bither and Anna Tyler. She is a member of the huge Bither family in Linneus. Isaac's mother was Nancy Jane Sterritt. Her parents were James Sterritt and Lillian Jane Wilson.

Surnames: Sawyer, Cairns,Hall,Quimby,Alger, Waldron,.McGilton,Smith Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kRFBAIB/1448 Message Board Post: Mrs. Gertrude McGilton of Sawyerville , Province. Quebec On May 29, 1982, Sawyervillelost one of its oldest citizens when Gertrude May McGilton passed away at the Second Mile Senior Centre, a residence fot the elderly in Sawyerville. Born in Eaton on October 30, 1883, the daughter of Jerone Sawyer and Margaret S. Cairns, sge would have had her 99th birthday within five months of her passing. Gertrude or Gertie as she was affectionatley called, was a great-grandaughter of the founder of Sawyerville, Captain Josiah Sawyer and the lastof that name in this area. Her grandfather was Peter Green Sawyer, eldest son of the Captain and her grandmother was Mary Hall. Her mother's people, the Cairns. were directly from Ireland, being of Ulster Scotch extraction. She was married at the age of 23 years to Benhamin H. Quimby on Dec 28, 1904, at Boston ,Mass. She spent many years in the Cambridge, Mass. area. After her husband';s death she returned to Eaton Corner and cared for Miss Katie Alger, a cousin, who left her home to her when she passed away. It seemed to be Gertie's lot to care for others. She nursed a lady in Cambridge and Anna Waldron in Eaton. On July 14, 1943, she married Wm. Charles McGilton and they lived in Eaton Corner. Some time after his death she moved to Sawyerville spending her remaining years here entering the Second Mile Senior Centre in 1977. Gertie had a quick wit and always an answer for everyone. She told stories of her childhood in Sawyerville. Her father was herdsman for William, Sawyer M.L.A. and they lived next door in the old house which had belonged to Capt. Josiah Sawyer. Gertie's mother died when she was only three years old and Williams wife Julia Smith Sawyer taught her how to be a lady as she put it. Julia had no children of her own and enjoyed Gertie's company and also taught her many Bible verses and how to sew and cook. Being sort of an imp, she would play in the church next door with her friends and she would always be the minister. They would ring the church bell but no one ever complained because of her being a protege of William and Julia Sawyer. This was in the old Methodist Church before the present United Church was built. Her father married Maria Osgood and Gertie went to Clifton to live with her sister Elva,Mres. Robert Taylor, for a few years. Her funeral service was helod ion the Sawyerville United Church on June 1st, with prayers at the L.O.Cass and Son Funeral Home. The bearers were Douglas and Lawrence Mackay, Fred Robinson, Lionel Hurd, Rene Bedard and Crescent Bain. Attending the funeral from out of town were Mrs Leonard McGilton, Pointe Claire, Mr and Mrs. Thayne McGilton, Beaconsfield, and Mr and Mrs reginald Leavens, Derby ,VT. The staff from thje Centre and a close friend Mrs Raymond Coastes were asked to join the mourners. Interment was in Eaton Cemetery. Donations to the Senior Centre in her memory were gratefully received. Gertrude SAWYER MCGILTON donated the soup tureen and pitcher that belonged to Josiah Sawyer father of Peter Green Sawyer to the Eaton Quebec Nuseum.
