I've tried doing a search but all I get is Richmond, VA. It was described as a mansion large enough for an army, owned by Enoch Sawyer who inherited it from his father Lemuel. The last mention I can find of it is in 1823. Thanks so much, NC research from CA is hard. Samantha

The Joseph in our line was born in 1901, several years later than the Joseph you are trying to trace. I have come across many Sawyer families all throughout New York - many with the same first names which makes the search that much more difficult. I don't suppose you happen to know his parents' names or the name of his spouse? Another way I sometimes run into luck is in trying to trace siblings and their spouses. Good luck in your search, Stella

My gr grandfather is Joseph Edward Sawyer, born in New York about 1860-1875. He moved to Minnesota and then to Washington State. Where does he keep popping up for you? We can't trace where he came from in New York - I'm wondering if this is the same person. He had brothers named Louis, William and Sandy (Alexander?), but my aunts can't remember anything else. Thanks!

    3. Robert I think you are right about the paper trail and may just be non existent. With DNA, it can certainly be traced back to the area and the origin as the pool grows. Certainly an exciting science in more ways than one. 2. Samantha, Just a reminder to all of us that are searching for that elusive northeastern NC Sawyer connection. With all of the people, that have spent countless thousands of hours, searching for that connection there probably just isn't any paper trail to be found. If you are really interested in getting over this "brick wall" the Family Tree DNA "Sawyer Surname Project" is probably the best avenue left for us, but we have to have several male Sawyers that are willing to spend a little money to find out. The 12 Marker Y-DNA test cost only $101.00 (total) and that will give some real good indicators, the 25 Marker Y-DNA test cost $171.00 (total) and that will narrow the results down consideralby. Fred Sawyer, of Connecticut, got the full blown 37 Marker test and just received several leads of people who he is related to. Our tests showed that Fred and I have no common ancestor for at least 600 years, so.... I guess that means we are not related. But we now know that at least some of the northern Sawyer lines have no connections with the Sawyers from the Carolina's. Please think about joining, we need some participants to make this work. Go to their web site - familytreedna.com or contact me. Robert R. Sawyer Houston, TX

    3. Regarding early Sawyers. I did some research in Richmond back to 1640s and could not find a source for this pod of N. C. Sawyers. It would be wonderful if we could get back just one more generation on these early Sawyers.
