Cheramie, John Sawyer was the first recorded Sawyer to northeastern NC. He came to the Pasquotank area as an indentured servant with his wife MARY who was listed as a servant. The 1680 document states John wad due three "Headrights," which was usually 50 acres for each "head". John had two "Freedom Rites" and one "Transportation Rite" as Mary's transportation was not owed for. In 1695 John is given a land grant with Robert his son on the southwest side of the Pasquotant River, referred to as Gumberrry Swamp and on the creek (Sawyer's Creek). Their grant was for 400 acres. In 1695 two land grants were recorded for Thomas Sawyer: 450 acres and 200 acres - described as being n north east side of Pasquotank River, one piece joined Thomas Cooper and the other piece joined Thomas French and William Jennings. In 1695 Henry Sawyer was also given a land grant for 190 acres in Pasquotank Precinct joining John Jones on north east side of Pasquotank River. John Sawyer died 22 Dec 1713. His will is listed as Albemarle County. Filed with the Secretary of State. Named sons: John, Thomas, Robert and Solomon; Grandson Charles Grandy; and wife JEAN (at his death). The next land grant in the area was given to Henry on 20 Apr 1714 for 510 acres on North River Swamp. On 22 Nov 1714 Henry and Robert were granted 674 acres on North East side of Pasquotank which joined Thomas and Henry's line, among others. >From 1695 to 1714 (19 years) John, Robert, Thomas and Henry accumulated 3, 086 acres in Land Grants, alone. Thomas died 19 July 1720 and named sons Caleb, Stephen, Thomas and Richard; daughters were Mary, Ann, and Hannah Sawyer; and wife Dancy/Nancy McDowell Henry died 24 Jun 1728 In Pasquotank and named sons Charles, Benjamin and Daniel; Daughters named were Tamer, Caen, Elizabeth Williams, Charity Gray and Susanner Williams. Robert Sawyer died 1735 in Pasquotank named sons: Jeremiah, Joseph, Zachariah, Denis and John Scarborough; daughters named: Ester Sawyer, granddaughter Susannah Sawyer; and wife Frances. According to this booklet Henry was a first cousin of Caleb, skipping through the relationships, the rationale of the author of this booklet is that the original John and the original Thomas were brothers. According to the author of the booklet there were three separate lines of Sawyers in early Pasquotank. Dear Cheramie, I was wondering where Sawyers Creek area is - in what state? My Sayers (later changed to Sawyers) are from Va, NC area. I have verified information on Andrew Sayers who married Nancy Puckett in 1836 in Stokes Co, NC and migrated back to virginia (Wythe and Smyth Co) by 1840. they were said to be a long time in Viriginia and went to NC to get away from Indian attacks. It is said that Andrew may be a grandson of Alexander Sayers who had a mill on the New River and died in the river trying to escape from the Indians. does anyone have a connection to this line? Does anyone have a Willis Sawyer who died in 1809. His wife's name was Sarah. A newspaper article of August 17, 1809 states that he was from Bertie County, NC, and that property he owned on and near Martin's Point in Currituck County would be sold to the highest bidder at the home of Willis Gallop, Esq. on the North Banks in Currituck Co. on the 5th of Oct 1809. Any information on either of these people would be appreciated. Jean ated. Jean=20

Hi! I haven't requested any information from you so far- I'm new at this. My grandfather was Charles Alan Sawyer(Worcester,Mass), son of Franklin Barnes Sawyer(of Millbury, Mass.), grandson of Samuel Sawyer(married to Lucinda Bacon), and I think? great grandson of Obediah Sawyer. I noticed some of these names mentioned on the web site and I am very interested in finding out more information. Also, I would like to know how to purchase the Sawyers of New England. Thanks for any info or help you could give me. I am looking for a Francis (Frank) Sawyer born circa 1817-1820 in Canada. He married a gal named Clarissa Odile (don't know her maiden name) born in Canada circa 1820. Francis and Clarissa moved to Northwest New York State (Jefferson County) before the 1840 census. Their children were: Clarissa, Julia, Joseph, Mary Ann, Margaret, Levi, William, Matilda, Josephine, Adeline and Charles. Poof ! - After the 1860 census both parents and all but two daughters disappeared from Jefferson County! Thanks for your time, Lucie
It seems that I cannot find any information on any Sawyer's that moved to Oklahoma, Texas, or Ark. I have a death cert. for Pashia but nothing else and absolutely nothing on James except for a picture. I have names for all the children of both grandparents and great grandparents. If anyone's line resembles this please contact me. Or if some one would like to help me research them. _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
