    3. Shannon: The Etched in Stone cemetery book that you refer to is available at the Newburyport, MASS library in their genealogical research section. Phone: (508) 465-4428/4429 - or write: Newburyport Public Library, Newburyport, MA 01950. The Noreen Pramberg publication is also in that library in that section. Not sure if they "inter-library" loan - but worth a check "to see". Good luck Winnie Sawyer Ahlquist

    3. Dear Valerie, Although Sawyer Families of New England is a very good book, you have to take the information and check it for yourself. I will tell you that I do not agree with some of the information she has on my family. And I, of course, think that I am correct! The entry about Charles N. that you are talking about is actually on p. 582 and she does have after the entry about Eliza S. McLellan, b. ?. I don't think I included that "b.?" before. After the section on Ezekiel Sawyer's family she gives the following sources: Gardiner ME census 1830, 1840, 1850, VR Gardiner ME and ME Old Cemetery Association, Series I-II, III, Augusta ME, 1982/1987. Good luck with your search! Phyllis On Wed, 7 Jul 1999 02:25:49 -0700 (PDT) SAWYER[email protected] writes: Phyllis S. Williams Mentor, OH and Punta Gorda, FL [email protected]

    2. Phyllis, Thanks for the Sawyer information. If I can't find a copy of the book, I'll take you up on your offer to copy the pertinent pages for me. Some of the information you gave me matches with what I have, but some of it is totally different. The info that conflicts is from page 583: Charles N., b. 9 Aug 1829 Gardiner, ME, d. 10 Feb 1888, m. 14 Jun1853 Gardiner, ME Eliza S. McLellan I've never heard of any McLellans in my family. I show that Charles N. married Abigail LEACH, and they stayed married until he died in the late 1800s or early 1900s. The birth date and parent information is the same, however. Hmmm... I'm going to enjoy tracking this down now that I have such a large Sawyer support group! Valerie [email protected]

    3. Hi Phyllis: Noticed your note re having the book, SAWYER FAMILIES OF NEW ENGLAND by Eleanor Grace Sawyer, and was wondering if you would look up and advise the inclusion of any data and/or info on William Sawyer b. 1703 (Scotland or England), d. 1784 Lancaster Co. PA. This William Sawyer, my 4th gr grandfather, married Sophia Clemson, dau. of James Clemson of Chester Co. PA. ca 1727/28 and there were 7 children born of this marriage. Thank you in advance for your assistance to me on this matter. It is sincerely appreciated. I have considerable data and information on my Sawyer line descending down from this William Sawyer, and would gladly exchange info, etc with any that might have common ancestry. Paul D. 3. Hi Valerie, I have the book, Sawyer Families of New England, 1636-1900 by Eleanor Grace Sawyer and Iooked up your Ezekiel Sawyer in there. She has him listed in a section on unconnected lines. The line is on pages582 and 583. The line starts with Isaac Sawyer, b. ca. 1762 Falmouth, ME, d. 11 May 1847 Gardiner ME, m. Lavinia Atkins of Bowdoin, ME, b. 1765, d. 20 Dec 1840 Gardiner ME. Both buried Cannard Cem., So. Gardiner, ME. She has 2 children listed for them: Ezekiel, ca. 1798-1877 and an unnamed daughter, b. 1810-1815. She follows with this above Ezekiel, b. ca. 1798 Gardiner, ME, d. 21 Sep 1877 Gardiner, ME m. 20 Jan 1825 Gardiner, ME Sally Atkins, b. 1800 d. 21 Dec 1873. Both bur. Mt. Hope Cem., So. Gardiner, ME. Their children: Mary A., b. 15 Jan 1827, m. 3 Aug 1854 Lewis Moore Charles N., b. 9 Aug 1829 Gardiner, ME, d. 10 Feb 1888, m. 14 Jun1853 Gardiner, ME Eliza S. McLellan Henry R., 1833-1907 Ezekiel W., b. 3 Dec 1836, d. 25 Feb. 1847 Augusta, b. 15 Aug 1840, d. 24 Oct 1856 She then follows with the family of Henry R. and then the family of his son, Ezekiel Joseph Sawyer. She evidently hadn't been able to connect Isaac to any parents, but there are many Isaacs listed in the Cape Elizabeth and Falmouth area, which is where some of my line was for a time. I am descended from a Jacob Sawyer who was in Cape Elizabeth and that family migrated there from Gloucester, Mass. where most of them were descended from James Sawyer of Gloucester. I think this is a hard family to straighten out, but you may be able to solve it eventually. If you have no access to this book and would like copies of these pages maybe sometime I could get copies made and send them to you. Hope this has been of some help. Phyllis Phyllis S. I have not looked for deeds. 2. Regarding the Pasquotank Sawyers Charles Sawyer - See also Thomas Sawyer 1730 between Thos. Sawyer and Charles Sawyer Space for the grave of John Sawyer father of Thomas. Fee paid by Charles Sawyer. Ref: To Chapell at Sawyers Creek July Court 1730. The above certainly is a mystery. Could they be talking about John Sawyer who supposedly died in 1713. He had a son named Thomas....but his will was probated in 1720 so we know it is not referring to the first John and Thomas Sawyer. John Sawyer Sr. had a son, John Sawyer Jr. has he been traced? Could he have had a son named Thomas? There must have been two Charles Sawyers by 1730 because there is a reference regarding Charles Sawyer to Capt. sawyer's old plantation. We know in 1690s there was a Charles Sawyer but have not been able to trace him or fit him into the early Sawyers other than owning property near the early Sawyers The above certainly is a mystery and one a group of us have been working on over one year in an effort to seperate these early Sawyers. I wish that magic person would appear who knows about the above reference. Also I have a reference as I have seen that people were looking for a Malachi Sawyer or a Cornelius Sawyer. Marriages for Cornelius Sawyer in Carteret Co. Marriages. Cornelius m. Frances Ann Gordon 12/23/1860 Cornelius Sawyer m. Harriett Windsor 12/2/1867 In the Henry Sawyer line there is supposedly Cornelius, son of Daniel Sawyer >From wills of Camden Co. 1755-1854 appears Malichi Sawyer was son of Cornelius Will 1753. 2. Below is some of my research. Also if anyone is descended from the Bermuda John Sawyer - Shannonhouse......In the book, House of Shannon by Edna Shannonhouse she states Elisha probably died young but I have found an Elisa Sawyer in Charleston, S. C. and Married to Ann Blake and also there is a will on file for him. If anyone is interested I will look up the references. Wills From: the oldest will book in Albermarle #431 John (X) Sawyer, planter 22 Dec 1713 (no probate) of Albermarle Co. Son John Sawyer 100 acres where he now lives, Son Thomas 100 acres, Son Robert - 100 acres where he now lives. Son Solomon - his choice on the land up the river left out of the other 400 acres; a mare in Boney Woods. Grandson Charles Grandy - the remaining 100 acres. Son John's eldest daughter - heifer. Son Thomas' wife - heifer. Wife Jean Sawyer - household goods. Other legacies. Exec. wife Wit: Thomas X Sawyer, Robert X sawyer, Timothy Reading I have looked at the N. C. archives for probation of John's will. Could anyone on the list please tell me how to go about finding the probation of old John's will or estate records if not on file at the archives. The date of Dec. 22 is when the will was written but it is not impossible that he wrote the will and died on the same day. If I am not mistaken just a little later than Dec. 1713 we see a JOhn Sawyer Sr. and Jr...being fined 5L for not going to "INdian warr" and two others and this according to court records went on for several months.(I will copy that to the list if anyone is interested) People have mistakenly tacked Reading on, making John's wife Jean Reading but I have not found any proof of this. (Found one ref. and there are others - Held in Chowan co 19th of Aug 1713...Upon complaint made by Daniel Guthree, Deputy Marshall for the precinct of Pasquotanke that Robert Morgan, John Sawyer Sr. John Sawyer Jr., Edward Williams, Richard Hastings and Robert Sawyer did utterly refuse to pay the fine of 5 pounds for bot goeing out in the Indyan Warr............. 3. The booklet, by Mary Frances Sawyer Webster, that I copied in the Currituck Co., NC library stated: "John Sawyer died 22 December 1713, and his will is listed as Albemarle Co, (which would be later called Pasquotank County). Like all Wills, before 1760, in the State of North Carolina, it is filed with the Secretary of State's Office. John's will named sons John, Thomas, Robert, and Solomon. He gave each a plantation. He also named Charles Grandy, as his grandson, and his wife's name was Jean (at his death)." The same booklet states: " Thomas Sawyer, of Pasquotank, died on 19 July 1920, and named sons Caleb, Stephen, Thomas and Richard. Daughters were Mary, Ann, and Hannah Sawyer, and his wife Dancy/Nancy McDowell. Ancestors of Caleb believe John, who died in 1713, was the father of "their" Thomas, but that was impossible, as in 1730 a Thomas Sawyer sold land to Charles Sawyer, stating that it was left to him by his father, John. It was signed by Thomas and John. (John was the son of John, and did not die until 1743.) Also, John who died in 1713, listed a Thomas in his will and he would not have named two living sons, Thomas. It is to be noted that John did not name Henry, either, in his will. A local noted historian and author referred to the donation of church land, by Thomas, who was the first cousin of Caleb. Obviously, he knew the "original John" and the "original Thomas" were brothers, which in turn made Thomas (son of John) and Caleb (son of Thomas) first cousins. It is my belief, when I found the 1720 Will of Thomas, of Pasquotank, naming his sons, it helped in sorting out the original Sawyers into three direct lineage's. John, Thomas and Henry were brothers. The Will of Thomas, d. 1720, is not listed in any of the North Carolina Will Books that I have come across. I found this Will in the North Carolina Historical and Genealogical Register." For anyone not familiar with the "North Carolina Historical and Genealogical Register", it is a three volume set of books written by J. R. B. Hathaway in 1901, 1902, 1903. Hope this helps. 1. John Sawyer and Thomas Sawyer
    2. The will of John Sawyer who names sons: John, Robert and Soloman was never probated that I have been able to find. I believe the will was made in 1713 but never probated. So we do not know where or when this John Sawyer died unless someone else has some information. The will for Thomas Sawyer Albermarle, Pasquotank Precinct states daughter Dancy McDonnell instead of wife. Some have speculated that her name may be Nancy and she could have been married to a McDaniel. >From earlier records, I believe the wife of Thomas was Mary. Then we have William Sawyer very early in the area. WILLIAM SAWYER - APPEARS 1691 (NO WILL HAS BEEN FOUND) A John and William Sawyer mentioned together in court record 1704. So we know there was some kind of relationship between an early William Sawyer and a John Sawyer. That's all for now.

    3. Hi, I would like to hear from anyone who connects to ABIGAIL SAWYER and her husband NATHANIEL HASKELL who came to Canada from Mass. around 1801 with their children. They were married in Lancaster in 1775 and her parents may have been Josiah and Abigail (nee also SAWYER!) Thanks, Kris [email protected]

    3. I can not find any reference to Pharoah Sawyer. I have checked all the books and reference material I have on Sawyers and can find nothing, which , of course, means nothing. There were numerous Sawyers in northeastern NC and more "arriving" everyday. He may not have been related to the original Sawyers in the Pasquotank area late 1600' and early 1700's. Sorry, but if I ever do come across the name and any info I will pass it on to the list.
