Hello! Of all the e-mails that I have received regarding the Sawyer's....are there any researchers out there that our names are spelled.... SOYER? Help! Cindy
Hi Noni and All, I think I can shed some more light on this line. This information you have sounds like what appeared in final form in Ruth Sawyer Thompson's "Dear Folks" book on the 4 lines of she and her husband's parents (Joseph Thompson, James Sawyer, Hugh Thompson and Booth families). The book was published in 1972 and I received my copy from my grandfather (Clifford Benjamin Sawyer). My site at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Fields/3076 has most of the Sawyer information from this book on it. Bert Sawyer was one of the many people Ruth had gotten info from in preparing the book. I'd be happy to try to answer other questions based on my copy of the book. Contrary to the book's statement that James was born in England, I believe he was born in New England and is descended from Thomas Sawyer through John and James, but I haven't been able to prove this yet. Also, some research on file at the Orange County Genealogical Society in Goshen, NY indicates that his wife's maiden name was probably not Bradner. Steve Sawyer in AZ
Even though I have not found a connection to my "Sawyer's", I want to thank everyone for all the hard work and research that has gone into this (obviously very large) family. I hope everyone has a very happy holiday and if anyone is researching the Currituck County, NC, Sawyer's in the early and mid 1800's, I would love to hear from you. Hi Gang, Didn't expect such a response with my "give - away", of which I will go more into detail. Please, if you think it is your line, I will send you the copy, and if you think (??) it might fit into your line, I will make a copy (via hubbie's work)------ But, just having it will not help you unless you are keeping several files, like I do. In going through my files today, I found a copy I had made (in 1 B.C.) of; "JAMES AND ELIZABETH SAWYER" 1735 -1971 compiled from data given by Bert Sawyer James was born 1738 in England --d. 1782 m. Hello Jo, I did not see your first query. If your John Sawyers was b. 1751 in Augusta Co., VA, d. 20 Nov 1837 in Knox Co. TN, and was a patriot of 1776, I can help you. Let me know if this is the one you are searching for. Kathryn
Dear Jo, I am wondering if your John Sawyers can be related to my Andrew Sayers (later spelled Sawyers). I have never been able to find the parents of andrew Sayers. He was born about 1812, maybe in Wythe co, Va, maybe in NC, maybe somewhere else! He notes different birthplaces in different censuses. Andrew married nancy Puckett in 1936 in Stokes Co, NC. they moved right after that to Wythe Co and then Smyth Co, VA where they had 10 children and many grandchildren. Nancy died in 1887 and Andrew died in 1907. It has been said that Andrew fought in the Indian Wars and recieved a pension, but I have no proof of that. Andrew and nancy are both buried in Falling Water Baptist Church Cemetery in Attoway, Smyth Co, Virginia. Since I've had no response to my query about Capt. John Sawyer and since I've been able to locate information about him myself in another King's Mountain book, I'll share that with those of you who may not know and who may be interested. The book is KING'S MOUNTAIN AND ITS HEROES by Lyman C. Draper, LL.D., which has references to Capt. John on pages 286, 418, 569, 576 and 577. Page 418 says, "John Sawyers was born in VA in 1745, shortly after his parents arrived from England, who early settled in Augusta County, VA. In 1761 young Sawyers was engaged on Colonel Byrd's abortive expedition, and in other frontier service against the Indians. In 1768, he with others explored the Holston Valley, early removed to that frontier, and served at Point Pleasant, on Christian's Cherokee campaign, and on the Chickamauga expedition in 1779, and led a company at King's Mountain. Settling in what is now Knox County, Tennessee, he was made a Major, then a Colonel, and twice chosen a member of the Legislature. He died Nov. 20, 1831, aged eighty-six years." Information on the other pages pertains directly to the battle. Jo Sawyer
I'd really love to find this Frank Sawyer's family. I'm looking for information on Frank Sawyer born about 1810 in Canada. He married Clara Dellmarse and lived in Clayton, Jefferson County, in Northern New York State. The family disappeared from Clayton after the 1860 census. Children of Frank and Clara were; Clara, Julia-Ann, Joseph, Mary-Ann, Margaret, Levi, William, Matilda and Josephine, All children born in New York State. I'd really appreciate any info that anyone could share! Thanks! All the Best, Lucie
Hi Betty: Since you seem to be serious about your research, I would like to give you some further information. The line of descent from Thomas 1616 through your William 1679 is fully documented in a serious work of genealogy by a recognized author. I refer to Eleanor Grace Sawyer's "Sawyer Families Of New England 1636-1900," Penobscot Press, Camden ME 1995. It is shown that the line with supporting reference documentation is as follows: Thomas 1616-1706 EGS Page 166 for documentation. Thomas 1649-1736 EGS Page 167 do William 1679-1741 EGS Page 168 do If you need the "proofs" for this line you should get the book and make a copy of the sources so you can verify them for yourself. In my previous message I mentioned checking on the URL: http://mail.ancestry.com/ancestry/users/fjt Since you are a descendant of Thomas 1616, you would be most welcome to join with a group of us who are researching his line. I have just begun my Sawyer research. So I have very little information. I have 2 different Sawyer lines in what I am researching. One is in the Macoupin Co., IL area: Charles Sawyer, Hester LaVina 1837 - 1932 born in Staunton, Macoupin Co., IL died Cook Co., IL. And the other is in GA. John Sawyer 1730 - 1784, Cader Sawyer, John Sawyer 1805, Uriah Paige Sawyer 1845 - 1929 (Mitchell Co., GA) Is anyone else researching these lines? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hi to all, I'm looking for William Sawyer married to (1)Abigail Lilley and (2) Dorcus Burnap. My line is from William's first marriage (Abigail) Henry Sawyer their only child. I have not been able to find William's father. One has it as Samuel Sawyer of Newbury another says Thomas Sawyer of Lancaster, Ma. Neither really fit as William was born in Lancaster, Ma but Thomas has other children born at the same time as William. There are no vital records showing him born either place. Big mystery. Anyone out there know anything about William of Reading?? Thanks, Carole in San Juan Capisstrano, CA
Does anyone have the lineage on this person? Thanks. Jo

Hi James: Eleanor's book is out of print. She still has a small quantity of copies on hand for sale. The last time I contacted her she was charging $45 to include shipping. Her mailing address is: Eleanor G. Sawyer 9100 Belvoir Woods Pkwy, Apt. 305 Fort Belvoir, VA 22060 Her e-mail address is: [email protected] I have been told that the main difference between her book and Fred Sawyer's is that Eleanor's book contains referenced sources wheras Fred's book does not and has a lot of unsubstantiated guesses and errors in it. I would never use the Fred Sawyer book for anything other than a guide for further research, not as a source for any genealogical data. At this time Eleanor is working on an update to her book including a section on the later Sawyer's who left New England.
