Robert Earl and all, The Thomas Kirby you refer to was almost surely a close relative of Nancy Kirby Sasser. However, oral tradition has it that Nancy's father was Jesse Kirby. Few memories are as deeply imprinted in my mind as the confident tone in which my grandmother (born in 1875) answered when I asked her in ca. 1955 what Nancy's maiden name was: "She was a Kirby," my grandmother quickly replied, and she proceeded immediately to add that Nancy's father's name was Jesse. My grandmother must have heard this from many people of her parents' and grandparents' generations (particularly from her father, Arthur Humfleet, and from his mother Piety, daughter of Henry) and also from her husband, my grandfather's, mother (Susan, daughter of Jesse). The traditions I have heard more recently from other descendants of Henry and Nancy show a remarkable consistency in backing this up. As for the information I have seen from WFT etc. going back another generation to Jesse Sr. etc., I don't know how credible it is. But I would have to see a lot of documentary proof before I discarded the seemingly solid tradition of Jesse Kirby, Glenn ***************************************** Glenn E.
