I know that for the English it goes like this, and from I have seen Irish pretty much follow the same naming pattern; First Son or First Daughter - paternal grand parent Second Son or Second Daughter - the parent Third Son or Third Daughter - maternal grand parent So for example you have; William Freeman son of John and Hannah marries Mary Cording daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Children: John William Hannah Thomas Mary Elizabeth I am pretty sure this is one of the traditional Naming patterns.
