MAPLESVILLE Born- To the wife of Jasper Cottingim a boy. Miss Lizzie Harrison is very low at this writting. The residence of Mr. Thomas Doughty was burned last Thursday. He suffers a heavy loss, there being no insurence. OAKLEY Mr. H. C. Pennington and your correspondent visited Mr. Moses Mullins Sunday evening and while there they visited his June apple trees. LOCAL ITEMS Mr. Fred Pigg had the misfortune last Saturday while out fishing on Cumberland river to have his horse fall over a cliff and kill himself while grazing. Uncle John Arthur, an aged and highly respected colored man living five miles South of London, died last Sunday morning, after a long illness of typhoid. Mrs. W. L. Brown gave the young folks of London a very pleasant social last Thursday evening. A bold and desperate attempt was made last Wednesday evening just after dark by the eight prisoners now confined in our jail, to effect their escape, and had not their plot been discovered just at the moment it was they would have succeeded admirably. They had secured a two inch scantling about four feet long, with which they battered a hole in the sheet iron and broke the saw proof iron bars off their cage, making an opening through which two of them, Lewis Rector, the notorious horse thief, and a negro, had crawled and had about effected an opening through the brick wall sufficiently large to crawl through, when they were discovered. Judge Brown made an order yesterday transferring Rector to the Stanford jail for safe keeping. TUTTLE Mrs. Nancy Baker is very sick. Born-To the wife of W. F. Sasser a fine girl.
