    1. Josiah Sasser's Children
    2. Wynell, Here is the information you requested about Josiah Sasser's children. The will of Josiah Sasser (1782) lists Susannah Sasser as one of Josiah's heirs. (An Abstract of North Carolina Wills From About 1760 to About 1800, by Fred A. Olds, 1968, p.321). Josiah Sasser (d. 1782) and Elizabeth Bryan (later Blackman) had children John, William, Susannah Stevens, Elizabeth, Mary Stevens, Josiah Jr., and Lewis. The Johnston County Court records trace family fighting over William's estate into the mid 1820's. The State Archives in Raleigh, NC, contains a copy from 1817 of one of the many divisions of the property in Smithfield (File Box .056.508.73). The property is divided between Polly Bryan (wife of Benjamin Bryan), Elizabeth Williams (formerly the wife of Isaac Williams), Elizabeth Sasser, Lewis Sasser, Susannah Stevens (wife of Edward Stevens), and John Sasser. Hope this helps, Doug Sherman dougsherma@aol.com

    2. Digest is when the messages come to you each day all in one message. Most of the list have digest mode, and it makes it a lot simpler to deal with especially on a heavy traffic list like the Sasser list. Doug could you send me a list of Josiah Sasser and Elizabeth Bryan/t 's children. I believe our Susannah Sasser who married Edward Stevens is one of them. Wynell Simpson

    3. I'm looking for any information abt. my great grandfather Karl Sassmannshausen (b. June 7., 1835 in Hilchenbach, Westfalia, Prussia) who immigrated abt. 1870 to USA. I don' know if he shortened his christian and/or surname in any way, perhaps the surname Sasser is a shortened form (?). My anchestor settled first in Laredo/Tx. The last information (oral history) about him is a hint that he died in Salado/Tx. (date and place of burial are unknown) My great grandfather married again, his second wife was german born, they had abt. 2 - 3 children (born 1875+, names and dates are not known). My great grandfather and his new family had correspondance with their german relatives until worldwar 1, the letters got lost. My recent investigations don't have any success . I'm interested in sharing information about Sassmannshausen family members in USA and elsewhere (surname in full or shortened form). I have posted below what information I have. Obviously, Eli being remarried will need to be taken into account. This is based on census data that Don has graciously provided me, letters from one of Eli's daughters (Rachel) to my grandmother (Maggie Cheek Sherman) and great-grandmother (Mahala Sasser Cheek), and from the Sasser Book. I also have some data from the Soc. Sec. Death Index, but this needs to be confirmed (please consider this to be a family tree that is "under construction.") 3. Maureen, Sorry I didn't get to answer earlier. Since going online two months ago, I have received 11 notebooks of email so far and several stacks yet to be answered. The MARTHA DORTHULA SASSER you asked about was the daughter of HENRY G. SASSER, born 1843 in Meriwether County, Georgia (not Alabama). He was the son of WILLIAM PINKNEY SASSER and SUSANNA ROBERSON DISON (not Dixon). The family moved from Meriwether Co. to Talladega County, Alabama during the 1840's. HENRY G. served as a soldier in the Confederate States Army during the War for Southern Independence. WILLIAM PINKNEY SASSER and SUSANNA ROBERSON DISON were married about 1835 (no date found yet). He was born 1822 in North Carolina but I haven't learned exactly where as yet nor have I learned who his parents were as yet. Susanna was born in 1822 also. They had at least nine children: Richmond, James Dison, Sarah Antoinette, Henry G., William, Regina Clementine, Laura, John Wesley and Susanne Roberson. This information comes from an unsigned and undated manuscript in the family files at the Alabama State Archives in Montgomery, Alabama which I copied back in the 1970's. There are Stillings buried at Rough Creek, along with several other cemeteries in the county. There are 3 volumes of cemetery listings in print for the county and one ready for the printer. I did not find either Eliza or James in either printed volume, will search further. Sarah Elizabeth is the full name of the daughter who married William H. Harkleroad.
