    3. Joseph Sasser brother of Henry Did someone ask about a Joseph Sasser? I have a copy of an old photograph, it's in very bad condition, of Joseph Sasser brother of Henry. With a note in the right margin saying, "About 1913 at Tommy Hawk South of Bruno, Ark.." It's Joseph Sasser sited to his right his wife Josephine to her right the youngest boy Dee. To Joseph left an older boy Arthur. Back row left to right, Joseph, Mahdia, (A girl, possibly a teenager. The name can't be made out but ends ****kie), and Lindsay. If this is your group let me know. 3. Dear Glenn and all, I was the one who asked for the obituaries. I am trying to create a Sasser Family National Library, where information of every type can be preserved on our family, including and especially obituaries. I have always considered these to be very important sources of information. A typical obituary can include the date and place of birth, names of parents, spouse, children, sisters and brothers and often names of grandchildren; occupation, clubs, church; and the place of death and burial. Find a good obituary and you have found a real gold mine of information. I would appreciate it if all of you would make xerox copies of all obituaries you can find and send them to me at: Robert Earl Woodham 1130 Celia Drive Columbus, Georgia 31907 Thanks, cousins

Perry Someone suggested that we share obituaries we have in our possession. I have recently found a f ew, including that of my great grandmother, Susan Sasser Taylor, daughter of Jesse Sasser and sister of Wallace Sasser. She died in 1954 shortly before she would have turned 98. There is hardly any information in the obituary that we don't already have (and, in fact, as I will show below, there is some false information that should warn us anew not to accept something just because it is in print). She was my direct linkto the patriarch, Henry Sasser (her grandfather), as she knew him when she was a small child, while I knew her when I was a small child (I only saw her once, when I was six years old, at the time of her last visit back home in the Knox County/Laurel County area). Much of what I heard from my grandmother, Sarah Humfleet Taylor (Susan Sasser Taylor's daughter in law) came from my great grandmother as the two were in close proximity to each other between 1897 and 1911 (and were very fond of each other). (My grandmother--whose obituary I have also found--had presumably heard most or all of the same stories from her father, Arthur Humfleet, who too--like her mother in law--was grandchild of Henry Sasser.) This is the text of the obituary: SERVICES HELD FOR MRS. TAYLOR "BEATRICE, Neb. -- Funeral services for Mrs. Susan Taylor, 97, of Cortland, who died Thursday, were held here Sunday. Burial was in Beatrice Cemetery. "Born in Laurel County, Ky., Mrs. Taylor came to Nebraska in 1911. She was a member of the Baptist Church. "Surviving are her daughters, Mrs. Nancy McFaring of Blue Springs, Mrs. Sarah Day and Mrs. Rebekah Deming, both of Cortland; sister of Lexington, Ky.; 18 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren." This obituary contains two mistakes: (1) the daughter's name was Nancy (Nan) Hale (married to one of the Hales from Blackwater), not Nancy McFaring, and (2) there was no "sister of Lexington, Ky." (only a granddaughter). As for the other daughter, Mrs. Sarah Day, I don't think her home was ever in Nebraska, although she had often visited and helped care for her mother. The clipping that came into my hands does not give the exact date or the name of the newspaper. I hope eventually to write a short essay that will present what I have heard about my great grandmother that goes beyond the cold facts (and mistakes) of an obituary. 2. There are several small family cemeterys in the area that the Sasser's use to live. About 8--10 miles southwest of London KY on state route 80 there is an area with Sasser Road to the west and Blackwater road to the east and south. This is were these cemetary's are located. The cemetery where John Henry and Dixion Sasser are buried is off of blackwater road, you have to walk to it unless you have 4 wheel drive. This cemetery is badly overgrown with weeds and brush and I could only find 3 graves, John Henry, Dixion Sasser, and one other ( I can't remember the name right now). John Henry's grave had a fairly new stone on it. I am sure there are others here, but it was hard to find them with all the weeds. I found Bardin Sasser and his wife's grave off of Sasser Road in Gilbert Cemetery. This is a well kept up cemetery, but it was hard to find. I had to ask for alot of directions before I found it. The Children of Abraham and Margaret Sasser who died before the family went to Oregon are burried near Bardin Sasser also. There are new headstones on these graves also . Does anyone know who had the new headstones put here? There are other cemetery's in the area, Smith Cemetery is one. There are many Sasser's burried in the area. The names on the stones were all names that I knew from the family tree, as families in the area married each other. I took pictures of the graves and will scan them and send them after they are developed. I believe the children were: Bardin Sasser d.June 3,1890 Phebe Sasser d.July 28,1898 George Sasser d. June 8, 1900 Malinda Sasser d. june 1, 1903 I think there was one other infant Sasser here. I will get the name when I get the pictures back. Also send me the land grant information you have, thanks

    3. I have tried to follow the list(ing) of Sasser family names the last couple of weeks and am not really sure I understand what I know. I have to summarize the list as best I can. I am looking for the parents/siblings of Sabra(Sabry) Sasser, b. abt 1760, Dobbs Co., NC. I have tried to save every bit of info on any Sasser in that part of the country, hoping to get a link to her. I have seen a posting, listing a Sasser and Boyett in the same sentence, along with Dobbs/Wayne Co., NC. For some reason, I have lost that particular posting. to wit: (1) Sabra Sasser married James Boyett, abt. 1768, in Dobbs Co., NC. I assume, from the postings, that Dobbs was replace with Wayne Co. sometime after 1758. James (b. Northampton Co., NC) moved from Wayne Co., NC to Burke Co.,GA and later to Screven Co.,GA. His household is included in the 1790 census of Burke Co. (2) William Sasser (1715-1815) was shown in a posting, as being born in NC, and being a French Huguenot. I have heard that the Boyt/Boyet/Boyett/Boyette's were Huguenots also, but nothing specific. (3) William Sasser(1715-1815) had three sons, (1) Josiah (c. 1745-1781); (2) Stephen (c. 1747-1815); (3) John Jr. (c 1750-); (4) William (c.. 1753-1815); (5) Mary ( ). (4) Jame Boyett's father, Edward Boyette(Boyte), b. in Nansemond Co., VA, died in Wayne Co., NC, aft. 1785, so Dobbs Co., must have changed to Wayne Co. before 1785. (5) One of the postings mentions that "the French Sassers who were no kin to the other Sassers in the area-owned land in the eastern part of Johnston Co., that was split off to create Dobbs County in 1758 (now extinct),......... It goes on to say that Henry Sasser (1778 NC-1859 KY) was probably born there. QUESTION: Am I to understand there were two seperate families of Sassers in Dobbs Co. at the same time, one French the other ________? If the French Sassers were in the part of the county that was formed into Dobbs, what nationatility were the other Sassers in Dobbs Co.? If it appears that I have confused myself, then I have. I have tried to remove all the postings about family name meanings, and in the process, afraid I have removed some vital piece of information that may have given me the links to Sabra' parents/siblings. Any of the children of John Sasser could have been her siblings, or she could have been from a family of the " French Sassers " that do not connect to the Sassers? I would really appreciate any help on this line of the Sasser family, especially if I have anything wrong that I have posted. I am not beyond getting the facts confused.-Bill William L. 1. Sassers in the Revolutionary War
    2. To the group: This is a collection of some information I gathered at the library a few weeks back. It lists some Sassers in NC who had (or might have had) Revolutionary involvement. It is not exhaustive by any means. 1. NC Pension Roll (Copied from the US War Dept., Report on Pensions, 1835) County: Johnston Co. Name: Abel Sasser Rank: Private Sum Received: -- Description of Service: NC Militia Commencement of Pension: Mar 4, 1831 Age: 71 Laws under which they were formerly inscribed on the Pension Roll: Act of Mar 18, 1818. [Side note: Abel Sasser had property adjacent to William Sasser (Henry's father). If the age listed above is at the Commencement of Pension, then Abel was born ca. 1760. Could he have been William's brother?] County: Columbus Name: Benjamin Sasser Rank: Private Sum Received: $54.15 Description of Service: NC Militia Commencement of Pension: Mar 4, 1831 Age: 79 Laws under which they were formerly inscribed on the Pension Roll: Act of Mar 18, 1818. From "Roster of Soldiers From North Carolina in the American Revolution" by the NC DAR, 1932, pp. 440 and 426, respectively. 2. "Roster of the Patriots in the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge" by Bobby Gilmer Moss, 1992, pp. 187-188. Moss says the battle took place on 27 Feb 1776 and lasted only 10 minutes. It was described as "one of the first clear cut victories for the American rebels." This was an attempt by the British to establish a foothold in NC. a. Benjamin Sasser and Joel Sasser of Duplin County *may* have been in the Battle. Both served under Capt. Wm Taylor and Col. James Kenan. Kenan was in the Battle. b. Stephen Sasser of Dobbs County *may* have been in the Battle. He served under Capt. Wm Fellow and Col. Abraham Sheppard. [Unfortunately, I did not note which of his commanding officers was in the Battle, but one of them was for sure.] Doug Sherman dougsherma@aol.com

Box 578 > Caddo Mills, Texas 75135 903-883-4203 Hi - Here's what's going on. When RootsWeb adopted the Maiser lists, we set three goals for ourselves: (1) Deliver messages to accessible hosts in less than 30 minutes on average. (2) Have essentially no unplanned down times. (3) Have the list archives be fully indexed and searchable. That requires a lot of CPU power and, given our existing hardware, it looked like the cheapest way (a couple of thousand dollars) to get that power was going to multiple CPUs in each of server boxes. The good news is that multiprocessing did get us the CPU cycles so we could do fast turn-arounds and have power left over for searchable archives. The bad news is that multiprocessing seems to be unstable with our current operationg system and we're having far too many unplanned downs. So we're falling back to single processor machines. The lists have been down while we reconfigured servers and balanced loads again so we can get the mail delivered quickly. We should have the lists back up within an hour or so. However, this means we have no spare capacity at the moment for searchable archives. We'll buy and install more capacity as fast as we can, though. Without intending to beg and grovel too much for financial support of RootsWeb, I would like to mention in passing that if you intend to become a RootsWeb Member or Sponsor (or mention that to your subscribers), now would be a particularly good time to do so. "January 29th, 1863, Camp opposite of Yazoo River, Louisiana Dear Uncle, This evening I seat myself to inform you that I am well at present, and sincerely hope when these few lines reach your hand they will find you all well. I have nothing of special interest to write at present. Our Regiment is in bad health. At present it reports about one hundred men able for duty. As I have nothing interesting to write I don't think I can do anything more than give you a sketch of our trip since we left Memphis, Tennessee. We left Memphis on the 20th day of Dec., and went to Vicksburg. We reached Vicksburg on the 26th and skirmished all day Friday and Saturday. Sunday morning a general engagement came up. We were ordered in line of battle and fired on the Rebels. The fire was kept up about one hour when we were ordered to charge the Rebels' cannon. We did it in double quick. There were reports by the heavy of the Rebel artillery. We were ordered to fall to the ground to save ourselves. You may rest assured that ordered was obeyed. I think I lay as close to the ground as ever a squirrel did to a limb. We stayed seven days with them, though failed in taking Vicksburg. We then went on the boats and went back up the river to the mouth of the Arkansas River to a place called Post Arkansas and attacked the Rebels on Saturday morning, and Sunday at 9 o'clock p.m., the Rebels surrendered the fort. Eight thousand prisoners, ten thousand stand of arms, one thousand head of horses and mules, one hundred wagons, a large quantity of commissary stores and camp equipage. We then came back down the river to where we are yet in ten miles of Vicksburg. Our men are cutting a channel and turning the living Vicksburg 10 miles to the left. The news here is that the Rebels are vacating Vicksburg, but whether it is so or not I cannot say. I don't know how long we will stay here nor where we will go when we leave. I want you to write me as soon as you get this letter, and when you write, direct your letter to Memphis, Tennessee. So no more at present, but still remain your best friend. Iven Jones to Iven Jones (Stationery has a picture of General Halleck) I have corrected spelling, added punctuation, etc., to make this a quick read. I believe this to be Evan Jones, son of Darling Jones and Rachel Stanfield. This would be the Evan who married Barbara Sasser. He seems to be the only one in my data base who is the right age to have served in the Civil War, and who is also Even Jones' nephew. I'd welcome your thoughts. Evan Jones was listed in Margie's list of the 7th KY Infantry. Shirley Martin Chandler

    2. Hello, No, I believe that since there are so many Henry's, John's and Williams' in this Sasser family, this leaves room for error. THIS particular Henry was married to Ann (?Boyette?) and then to Elizabeth (?Grant?) b. 1825. In Henry's will ( probate 17 Jun 1872 Wayne Co., NC) his gives only $1.00 to each of the children from the 1st marriage. But to the Children of the 2nd marriage he gives land. Sources of info: Will of Henry Sasser - GS #20098 p. 46 Census: 1850-GS #444661 p. 448 Entry #477 1840 GS #18098 p. 208 1800 ref.10dex ****************************************************** Our family researcher has found that the John Sasser that so many of us have in common (Of One dozen Sassers) had a son named William b. abt 1754 (who married Elizabeth _?_). William and Elizabeth have a son named Henry that marries (1) Ann ?Boyette? and (2) Elizabeth ?Grant?. Henry and Ann have a son (among the rest of the children)named Elisha (b. 1801 ) who marries Eliza Ann Starling. Elisha and Eliza have 2 sons Eli ( my gg grandfather b. 22 feb 1826) and William "Willie" Sasser. Eli marries Eliza Game (NC books call her "Garne"--but it is Game) and they have Luther Blaine Sasser. Luther Blaine and Helena Martha Michaelis have several chlidren . My grandmother Fern was one. No one seems to be of this line (in this newsgroup) that I've found. If anything sounds familiar to anyone please let me know. Thanks Stephanie Eberle
