    3. I have two areas of Sasser interest, both of which originate in Wayne/Johnston Co. NC. My ggg grandfather Lazarus Crawford b.c.1740 Old Dobbs area of NC, d. 1818 Rutherford Co. TN named in his will a grandson, Olin Crawford Sasser (Wayne/Johnston Co. NC) This is a "burned county" area and research has not yielded the names of Olin's parents. Also, my gg grandfather Solomen Grantham (1808 - 1871) of Wayne Co. NC married Emily Sasser (1818 - 1908)9 September 1838 in Hardeman Co. TN. They are buried in Hardeman Co. TN next to John Sasser (d. 1875) and Mary Sasser (b.1819 - 1904) Can anyone provide me with information on either of these Sasser families? Cornelia B. Holland SJVW18B@prodigy.com

    3. Gabriel, Sarah was my husbands great Aunt. I would like to exchange info with you if you will E-mail me, but I need to correct some information that was posted from another so I am responding to the discussion group. Lewis Marion Sasser DID NOT die sometime between 1880 and 1900. He made application for a confederate pension in 1900 and again in 1914. In 1910 he is on the Geneva Co census with his second wife Sarah. Sarah Clark is buried at Bay Springs Cemetery along with 4 other siblings, as well as my husband's Mother Bonnie Hall Sasser. There were 11 children born to John and Sarah. One of Sarah Clarks infant is buried in the Sasser Cemetery on the home place which is still owned by one of John Dallas grandchildren. Since John Dallas Sasser died in 1912, and lived in Geneva Co(his house was just torn down last year) I wonder if a street would be named John D Sasser in Houston Co. There were other John D Sassers. WILLIAM was born in 1814 in Wayne County. Mary Ann ("Polly") was born 2 Sep., 1850 and died 23 Jan., 1888. They had at least six children. She MAY have been his second wife. You named three brothers. 3. Dear Gabriel, SARAH ELIZABETH SASSER was the daughter of JOHN DALLAS SASSER and SARAH ANN ELIZA HALL. JOHN DALLAS SASSER was born 23 Dec., 1857 in Henry County, Alabama and died 2 Nov., 1912 in Geneva County, Ala. He married Sarah Ann Eliza Hall, daughter of JOHN HALL about 1879 in Geneva County (marriage records in Geneva County for that period were destroyed in a courthouse fire). They had at least nine children. Sarah Elizabeth was the oldest. JOHN DALLAS was the son of LEWIS MARION SASSER and his wife MARY CATHERINE (don't know her maiden name yet). LEWIS MARION SASSER was born in 1838 (also listed as 1832) in Georgia. His wife MARY CATHERINE was born in 1841 in South Carolina. He moved to Henry County, Alabama sometime in the 1850's and first appears in records there on the 1860 US Census. At that time, Henry County included most of what is now Houston County, so I don't know whether he was living in what is now Henry County or part of Houston County. He later lived just south of the "arm" of Houston County which juts west of Dothan and just inside of Geneva County. Both Lewis M. and Mary Catherine died sometime between 1880 and 1900. His son John Dallas and his wife are buried at Bay Springs Baptist Church, which is located in northeast Geneva County, near the Houston County line. His parents Lewis M. and Mary Catherine MAY also be buried there but their graves are not marked with a tombstone. A street which runs several miles on the western side of Dothan is named "John D. Sasser Street" for him. Dothan is the largest city in southeast Alabama. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you who the parents of LEWIS M. were as yet. I am convinced that Lewis M. was a grandson of LEWIS M. SASSER, who was born in Wayne County sometime in the 1770's and died in 1823 in Pulaski County, Georgia. He had two sons by his first marriage: JOHN and NOAH as well as a daughter; and five sons by his second marriage. Your Lewis M. was apparently a son of either JOHN or NOAH. His widow, Elizabeth and children settled in Stewart County, Georgia, which borders Alabama, sometime before 1850. His youngest known child, LEWIS HENRY SASSER, moved to Henry County, Alabama sometime in the 1850's at the same time that your LEWIS MARION moved there also. To complicate matters worse, there was ANOTHER LEWIS SASSER, who died about 1840 in Twiggs County, Georgia. His widow, Jane, and her children also settled in Stewart County, Georgia. More later... Your cuz, Robert Earl Woodham

    3. This last week I visited Henry Sasser and Kate's grave in Higlandvile MO. The cemetery is South of Springfield MO. To reach it take hwy 65 South to hwy EE. Then go East about two miles.. It is located on the North side of Hwy EE. I took some pictures of the tombstone if anyone one wants a copy... My Father, as well as five of his siblings were born there. Highlandville is just north of the Orzark Mountains on a flat prairie like area. Today the town has a population of 722. I also had a difficult time trying to find the cemetery. I had to stop and ask direction several times. The direction posted by the Christain Co. Historical Society were incorrect. One gentleman I spoke to was names Sheldon. He was 80 years old and lived there all his live. He remembers his dad talking about the Sasser's and had always wondered what happen to us. He also said his grand mother had came form KY to Ar to MO. They homesteaded there and the original home was still standing... barely.. If any one has a picture of Adin Sassers grave I would like very much to have a copy.. Thanks Don Sasser

    1. FW: De Sasseur / de DeNune from Scotland?

    3. Food for thought- From: Don Nooner Sent: Tuesday, July 01, 1997 10:40 PM To: Don Sasser Subject: Re: De Sasseur / de DeNune from Scotland? Don, Thank you for responding...I felt so badly when I sent it, and it just came back. It is from the book,"REGISTER OF MARYLAND'S HERALDIC FAMILIES" period from 1634, March 25th to March 25th, 1935 by Alice Norris Parran, sponsored by the Southern Maryland Society Colonial Dames. "DENUNE: Ethel Denune, now, Mrs. Norville Finley Young. 1968 Denune Ave., Columbus, Ohio. (I won't go into lineage or registrants) The name, Denune was assumed by the proprietors of the land and barony of Denune in Argyleshire, Scotland, as early as names became hereditary in the country. The name is local and the first two letters probably had a prepositional or designative use before they, together with the place name, became a single word. Once the honor of knighthood had been conferred on a member of this family the name became 'de Denune'. In a charter of James, Lord High Steward of Scotland, confirming the donation of his predecessors to the monastery of Paisley the witness are Robert, Bishop of Glasgow; John, brother of the Lord High Steward; Sir Arthur de Denune, Sir Nicholas Campbell and Sir Reginald Crawford, Knights William de Schow, Alexander de Monneville, Esquire, Anno 1294. Douglass further states that members of this family have been free barons in different counties of Scotland for some centuries. Sir Arthur de Denune and Guy de Denune were among the barons of Scotland forced to swear fealty to King Edward 1st of England in 1296. The lands and castle of Denune through feud and throug intermarriage became at last the property of the family of Argyle, and when in 1594, a quarrel arose between brothers of the house of Argyle, Duncan the Governor and Donald his brother, settled in the north of Scotland, assuming their maternal name Denune and retaining their ancestral arms. From Duncan the Governor descends a line of Denunes, Barons of Cathole, men "of parts and learning." John Denune, 5th Baron of Cathole, a man of singular merit, a faithful and loyal subject of king Charles 1st, spent the greater part of his paternal estate in his Majesty's service and died without redress. Contemporary with Andrew, Baron of Cathole, son of Duncan the Governor, and also in the north country lived Sir David Denune, likewise possessed of considerable estate which appears by two charters under the great seal domina Willielmo de Denune of the lands and barony of Pittigothy, the village and lands of Pettnellsi Ballancouth, in the shires of Ross and Inverness, one charter dated 1538, another 1540. That commissions of the highest importance were entrusted to the loyalty and dependable judgment of members of the Denune family is evidenced by the following from Collens' Peerage of the English Vol. 8, pg. 388," Edward IIIrd, he with William de Denune were commissioned to treat at New Castle with Sir Robert de Loweden, Knight, and others deputed by the Scotch on such matters as then shall be offered by them: From such historical records we learn that the Denune family has long played an important part in the drama of our race and civilization. The old castle of Denune was of such antiquity that no date or period was ever assigned to its construction. the present castle was built by the late Duke of Argyle. (the rest is about the Denunes in America, Dr. William Denune, who was born in Scotland and received his education in Paris, France and came here to America, a Huguenot, who married Elizabeth Duvall, also a Huguenot, dau. of Maren Duvall, of the Marsh. It is very interesting, but I did not wish to bore you, but only to show that the DENUNE name, really did start with a DE., as the question was if the 'de Sasseur' could possibly be the origin of the name, determing nationality...as it does with our Nuners and Nooner families. We have not yet proved it, but it has many strong ties and facts that I believe we are on the verge of proving a name change in America) Hope this helps a little.. Let me know when you find out.. A xerox copy of any original record is always better than a typed or handwritten copy. It might be compared to someone sending you a list of birthdates OR having a xerox copy of the information from the family Bible. Xerox copies of ALL types of documents wanted also I would also appreciate it if you all will send xerox copies of any old deeds, wills, old letters (with a copy of the envelope as well), marriage licenses, military records, family Bible records (the births, deaths, marriages, and a copy of the title page showing the date the Bible was printed), birth and death certificates, newspaper articles, cemetery burials (information from tombstones: names, dates of birth and death) and other types of documents and info. 3. Dear Earl and all, About obituaries on our family: PLEASE send me xerox copies of ALL obituaries you can find on our family. This includes any old ones you can find tucked away in family Bibles or scrapbooks, etc. AND current obits. I consider these to be VERY important sources of information. When I began my professional journalism career writing for the ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, the largest newspaper in the Southeast, the very first thing I was assigned to was writing obits, as all newbies were. It was meant to teach us a lesson: that this is a vital piece of information and that the information should be accurate. Mess up an obit and the phone will ring off the hook, I quickly learned. When you see an obituary of a Sasser relative in your local newspaper, PLEASE clip this out, along with the name and date of the paper from the top of the page and mail it to me. All these obits will be preserved in our Sasser Family Library for future generations to learn from and treasure. In addition, if you hear of a death in the family but don't have an obituary to send in, try to get all the information you can and email it to me so I can include the obit in our Sasser Family News newsletter. Your cuz, Robert Earl Woodham

    1. More info on Abel and Benjamin Sasser
    2. To the group: I found the following info on Abel Sasser and Benjamin Sasser at the NC archives last week. It comes from "Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files," Vol III: N-Z, by Virgil D. White (1990), p. 3020. Abel Sasser's pension file is #S7450. It says he lived in Johnston County at enlistment and applied for his pension on 27 Aug 1832. He was 69 at the time and was born in NC. (This doesn't agree exactly with earlier info I posted from another book, which had him as 71 in 1831). Benjamin Sasser's pension file is #S7446. He was b. 1755 in Dobbs County, lived in Duplin County at enlistment, and lived in Johnston County for 1 year following the War. He then moved to Wayne County and then on to Columbus County in 1798. His son, Frederick Sasser, was a resident of Columbus County in 1832. Benjamin applied for his pension on 14 Aug 1832. Doug Sherman dougsherma@aol.com

    2. In a message dated 97-07-03 13:54:14 EDT, you write: > Did someone ask about a Joseph Sasser? I have a copy of an old photograph, > it's in very bad condition, of Joseph Sasser brother of Henry. With a note > in the right margin saying, "About 1913 at Tommy Hawk South of Bruno, Ark.." > Earl, I had posted the following to the group a little while back: I was talking with my cousin in London, KY, and she mentioned a query that appeared in "Kentucky Explorer Magazine." If anyone has a photo of Joseph Sasser, (b. 4 Sep 1861, d. 7 Nov 1895 in Laurel County, KY) please contact Carl Depew at the following address: 13250 Ridge Road #4A-8, Largo, FL 33778. If the date of death is correct, then it wouldn't be the same one. Thanks for the info. Doug Sherman dougsherma@aol.com

    3. Earl, Yes, I will be around here during the summer--except possibly for a few days at some point. I think I saw the PBS documentary on the Civil War that you refer to. But that was before I had read Adin Sasser's letter. I will try to see it again, with the letter in hand, as you suggest. The Confederate family you refer to were my great great grandparents, Piety Sasser Humfleet (daughter of the patriarch and sister of Adin and Jesse) and her husband Bill Humfleet. Three of their sons were in the Confederate army, while Bill himself was put in prison on charges of cutting a telegraph wire. He was taken to the Johnson Island prison at Sandusky Ohio. (There was a recent docmentary on the History Channel about Civil War prisons which included a short piece on the horrible conditions there, including stories of men surviving by eating rats). When you travel to the Knox/Laurel area next year I hope you go to Mt. Olivet and visit the Humfleet home place. Our cousin, Lois Warfield and her husband Ralph Warfield--whose house is on the original site--will show you the metal box that includes family papers going back to the early 19th century, including the original copy of a hymn written by a fellow prisoner in honor of Bill Humfleet.) He was finally released (according to my grandmother, pardoned by Abraham Lincoln) but died in January 1865--before getting all the way home--of pneumonia at East Bernstedt in Laurel County. My grandmother had heard that he had to walk all the way (or, according to her account, at least from somewhere near Louisville, which I had mistakenly understood until recently to have been the place of imprisonment). Another sad story in a class with Adin's letter and predicament is the one that was included in materials I recently received from Debbie Mauelshagen about Piety having to take the wagon to East Bernstedt to bring her husband's body home. According to my grandmother, even the body did not get all the way to Mt. Olivet but instead--for reasons that one can only speculate about--was laid to rest at Robinson, just a few miles away. I sometimes halfheartedly fancy myself trying to write a novel about all this. Using my imagination to fill in the parts we don't know, I think I would have Adin writing another letter--this one to President Linconl pleading successfully for his brother-in-law's release. (To my knowledge, nobody has sought the documents that may be available on all this--and which might confirm or contradict some of the legends.) I don't know whether anyone has any explanation of how my great grandfather Arthur Humfleet avoided going to war along with his three brothers. He was born in 1847 and thus would have been about 15 years old in 1862. Many had to go who were even younger than that. I speculate that the recruiters were friends of the family and agreed to let this one boy stay, perhaps after his mother (Piety) begged them (and urged him not to volunteer). At least, those might be good fictional details. According to a different tradition, another one of my great grandfathers, Isaac Taylor, who would have been only about 12 years old at the time, was captured by the Rebels (at his home on Big Richland Creek, the place where I was born and raised) but turned loose at Mt. Olivet, just a few miles away; in my imagination, he was well known by the Humfleets, whose clout with the recruiters was responsible for his release. There are some anecdotes that I heard from my grandmother. One was about the young female relative visiting at Mt. Olivet (I think my grandmother said she was a Waggoner, but I am not sure) who taunted the Union troops passing by by yelling "Hurray for Jeff Davis!" Just recently, I heard another story from our cousin, Chester White (who is full of information about his Humfleet forebears). According to this story, Arthur Humfleet showed the troops where the spring was (he called it a sulfur spring and indicated that it was a considerable distance from the Humfleet place, and thus apparently not the one that my grandmother said she had to go to through the graveyard before daylight each moring). As the story (intended, I suppose, to contain an apocryphal element) goes, the troops "drank it [the spring] dry, and they drank the creek dry too." (Keep in mind that Mt. Olivet was on the Wilderness Road, the main highway though Cumberland Gap. As an afterthought, I am sending copies of this to the Sasser and Humfleet lists. I apologize to the members of the latter group for repeating some material they have already seen, but I might not get around to writing up the other maerial again.
