    3. http://www.wvlc.wvnet.edu/history/medallst.html LIST OF UNCLAIMED UNION CIVIL WAR MEDALS AT THE WEST VIRGINIA STATE ARCHIVES In order to claim an ancestor's medal, a claimant must submit his or her line of descent from the veteran along with documentation to support this line of descent. To establish line of descent, claimants must include copies of primary sources, including birth, death, marriage, will, deed, military, census, Bible records, etc. Old letters, diaries, marriage announcements, or obituaries may also prove helpful in verifying a descendant's claim. Plea= se note that a family chart submitted without further documentation is not sufficient. 3. Dear Cornelia, Gardening is another hobby of mine. Do you know the reason why your ancestors moved from NC to AL? In my line I know there was a Johnathon and William Sasser from Maryland. I have a date of 1790, may have been a birth date of William. One of them could be the father of William P. Sasser b. 1822 in NC. The family owned a boat they travelled in along river ways. Somewhere around the dates of 1822 and 1843, William P. Sasser's family travelled to Meriwether Co, GA. This is where I know of at least one son of William P. Sasser was born, Henry G. in 1843. Somewhere between 1843 and 1853 the family moved to Talladega Co., AL. Henry G. moved back and forth from AL and TX. Also, Do you have a Mary Elizabeth Taylor? Henry G. Sasser's daughter Martha Dorthula Sasser married George Washington Patterson. Mary Elizabeth Taylor was George's mother. Maureen (Patterson) Morales

    1. Alabama Township
    2. MS CORNELIA B HOLLAND
    3. Maureen, Alabama is land was laid out by latitude and longitude instead of using the "white oak tree" etc. such as found with land in the older states. So you really need an East/West coordinate to locate exact sites of townships. One item which may or may not help you, is that a group of residents from Wayne County, NC led by a Mr. Whitfield (name eludes me at this moment - prominent family, and he was a CSA officer) moved from NC to southern Alabama during the mid-1800s. The Whitfield mansion still exists and Birmingham library has a book on Whitfield which may help.. Given there were Sassers in Wayne Co., it is possible that some moved with the Whitfields as my Bunn/Burn from Wayne Co did. To the Sasser Group: I know very little about my Sassers, the information I have having been collected on the "fringe" of my other research. Since becoming a part of this group, I have had a couple of Emails directed to my Sassers, (WTJ Grantham and his wife Emily Sasser my gg grandparents and Olin Crawford Sasser, the granson of my ggg grandfather, Lazarus Crawford). Please bear with me.. my other hobby, gardening has gotten in the way of my genealogical research (my garden was filmed by public television yesterday) I will try to organize my information and put it out as as soon as possible. Cornelia Burns Holland related lines include Crawford, Grantham, Sasser, Coor, Croom, Bunn/Burn, Taylor, from Wayne/Johnston Co. NC area. mid 1700s to early 1800s.

    1. Lineage from Barton Sasser
    2. Earl, According to my data, Barton & Pherby Sasser's daughter Elizabeth married Thomas Smith in Laurel County on January 23, 1866. I know that Barton & Phery's granddaughter Susan D. Smith b. 4-23-1874 married my great uncle Claborn Taylor Jones (s/o Thomas Jefferson Jones) at the home of her parents on January 8, 1892. They had 6 children (Celia, Mary, Foster, Thomas, Odie, & Dora) before she died on October 22, 1901. She probably died from childbed fever or consumption, 2 common killers of women who had recently born children. Her youngest child was only 10 weeks old when she died. She is buried in the Beech Creek cemetery in Clay County about 3 1/2 miles from Manchester. Uncle Clabe's daughter Martha from his 2nd marriage has always confirmed that Susan was "Uncle Bart & Aunt Pherby's grandchild." She also told me the circumstances of their marriage. It seems that Jeff's 4th wife Virginia (my gr grandmother) died & left several small children who lived for a while with their mother's sister & then came back home. There was no woman living in the house...only Uncle Clabe & Grandpappy. When Clabe was 19, Jeff told him that he needed to find a wife who could help take care of the children, & he said that he would go to Laurel County and see if Susan would marry him and she did. She ran the house until Jeff married (#5 wife) in 1894. By that time she & Clabe had 2 children of their own.

    1. Research question
    2. Fellow Jones/Sasser Researchers: I need help on a problem that I have been wrestling with ever since I started researching the Jones family years ago. My gr grandfather Thomas Jefferson Jones (1836-1916) raised my dad Omer Jones (1905-1988) after dad's mother Sallie died. Jeff Jones was the oldest child of Malinda Sasser who married Millington /Milton Jones (m. 1841, Laurel Co, KY), but he was not Milton's child. Years after Jeff was dead, his son T. T. Jones wrote a letter to my father, explaining the circumstances of his birth. I will excerpt the relevant section. "My great grandfather on my father's side was Henry Sasser of North Carolina. He came into Knox Co about 1825. My grandmother, Linda Sasser remembered coming through Raleigh in a wagon. She was born in 1817....My grandmother, L. Sasser, bore my father to Anderson Jones of Laurel Co. who left her and went west to Kansas or Arkansas. She then married Milton Jones and had by him a large family." The letter is quite detailed about other (but unrelated) family relationships, and is correct in all other important aspects. There is significant support that Milton was not Jeff's father (i.e., birth & marriage dates, and also the fact that Jeff was not an heir when Milton died, despite the fact that he had been part of the family most all his life). There was a man named Anderson D. Jones of approximately the same age as Malinda who married Mildred Yager in (1844) and lived in Laurel Co all his life. According to the 1850 census, he was the son of Darling Jones, who lived near Henry Sasser in 1840 & had a son of the right age. If he is Jeff's father and went West, he did not stay long. I have never heard of any relationship between Jeff Jones & his biological father, so I can't say for certain whether the Anderson Jones I have described is the right man. I am hoping that someone in the group knows something (Perhaps, one of Anderson & Mildred's descendants). I would like to do some work on this branch, but don't know whether I should or not. I'm open to suggestions. Surely, I'm not the only genealogist with a "woods colt" in my tree. Vietta

There are about 100 Sassers mentioned in this particular CD-ROM for Alabama. Maureen (monrene@pacbell.net)

    1. Re: Lineage from Barton Sasser.
    2. On my recent visit to Laurel Co., I did find some information that might be of interest to Carl Edward Depew. I have a picture of Joseph Sasser's headstone and I have a copy of Joseph Sasser and Sarah B. Jones's marriage license and marriage certificate. I did notice one mistake in the information about my great grandfather, Abraham H. Sasser ( son of Bardon Sasser). He died July 7, 1925 in Enterprise Oregon . Abe and his wife, Margaret are buried in the Enterprise cemetary. His first wife, Louisa Russell Sasser is buried in the Gilbert cemetery in Laurel Co., along with 4 of his children. Abe and his family moved to Oregon in 1903. Now I have a few questions. I know that Millington Sasser married his first cousin Louisa Sasser (Adin Sassers daughter) on March 6, 1872. I also have a marriage certificate for William H. Sasser and Louisa Sasser . They were married on Dec. 6, 1877. Witneses were Dixon Sasser, Jessee Sasser and Joseph Sasser. The Certificate is signed by Henry Sasser . Which William H. Sasser is this? And who is this Louisa Sasser? Also does anyone know who Sally Ann Sasser (b.sept. 15, 1874) who is burried near Henry Sasser in the old Dixon Sasser cemetary? There is also Emily Sasser ( b. Jan 29, 1922- Dec. 19, 1935), buried near Barden Sasser and his wife Pharby. Does anyone know who she is? Michael Edward Sasser MikelSas@aol.com Elwood IL.

He said that he knows that one picture of him exist, but the lady is reluctant to copy it. In her picture, he is a grown man, maybe 25-30 years old. He said to remember he died young. 3. Adrianne, The book "OF ONE DOZEN SASSERS" was written by Mrs. Claudia Chitwood Weller. I haven't heard from her for some time. her last known address was: Mrs. Claudia C. Weller 3615 Shamrock Court Orlando, Fla. 32806 The book is about the descendants of THOMAS SASSER Senior and implies that he and his wife CLARISSA had 12 children. The title is incorrect. They had 21 (that's righe--21) children. Claudia was a "newbie" to family history research when she first contacted me back in the 1970's. I told her that I still had a LOT of research yet to be done on our older generations and urged her to wait until I could do more work before she published a book. So the book stops at the point where I was at that time. However, she didn't want to wait and as a result the book left out many children and their descendants. In the credits for the book, some of the information is stated to have come from certain folks: however, the original source for the information was yours truly, Robert Earl Woodham. 3. To: Earl and all From: Glenn Sorry I was so vague in referring to "Glasses who married Sassers." According to "A well published story," which Don shared with us (the one with that starts with the account of Palatinate origin), two of Jesse's daughters married Glasses (brothers, I believe). Rhoda married Hiram Glass, while Frances Evelyn married George Glass. The Rhoda who had the Bible (daughter of Rhoda and Hiram??) apparently was a much respected English teacher in the high school in Lexington, for when I met her she was retired from the public schools and--as I understood-- teaching at the University of Kentucky, presumably as a part-time (adjunct) instructor for freshman English Composition. She was a very dignified lady. I would not want to seem to be ridiculing her, and I am not. But my aunt and uncle used to tell me with some amusement that, in Lexington, she claimed to be a native of Culpepper County, Virginia (which she told me was where our Gilbert forebears came from) rather than admit that she came from the hills of Laurel County. I am not sure whether I saw her obituary, but I heard from the same people that it gave one of the Bluegrass counties as her place of birth. ***************************************** Glenn E.
