Dear Nathan, Glad to hear from you. The WILLIAM SASSER that is mentioned in the records you quoted was a brother of your SUSANNAH SASSER. William never married and died in 1815. The record you found was a division of his estate among his brothers and sisters. SUSANNAH SASSER was a daughter of JOSIAH SASSER Senior and his wife ELIZABETH ("Betsy") BRYAN. He and ELIZABETH were married in Johnston Co., NC on 30 Dec., 1770. ELIZABETH was born 28 May, 1751 and died in 1842. She was the daughter of William Bryan and Elizabeth Smith. JOSIAH SASSER Sr. was born about 1744 (only a guess) and died in 1781 in Wayne County, NC. His widow Elizabeth later married William Blackman and they moved to Twiggs County, Georgia where she died in 1842. JOSIAH SASSER Sr. was the son of JOHN SASSER Sr. and his wife SARAH (maiden name uk). JOSIAH Sr. served in the North Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War for Independence. I would certainly appreciate any info you could send me on the descendants of Susannah, up to the present. Unfortunately, I don't have ANY info on her descendants. Wish I could help you there. More later... Your cuz, Robert Earl Woodham Columbus, Georgia
Reba, My g, grandmother was a Crawford from Laurel, Co. , Ky. She married a Brock and bore my grandmother Rose Brock Sasser. I am looking for information on the Brocks who may have migrated from Tennesee, especially, Tim Brock. Can you help. Phil Sasser Cary, NC
Earl, John Sasser is my first cousin. He holds Ph. D.s in both mathematics and theology and is a professor of Mathematics at the U. of Cinn. and pastors a Baptist church in the area. John has done a lot of work on the descendants of Henry Sasser. John is fluent in both Russian and German and worked for Army Intelligence in Germany in the 1960s. There he married Heidi and they have 2 children. John was the first person that I heard who espoused the theory of the Sasser/Heimersheim connection. I do not know of any hard data on that, though and have not conversed with him in over a year. John is the son of the late Rev. Robert E. Sasser of Laurel County, KY. who was the son of Taylor Sasser, son of James Buchanan Sasser, son of William Henry Crawford Sasser, son of Henry Sasser. John is also the brother of the late Hugh Calvin Sasser who died recently (note that there were a couple of errors in the obiturary that you published-if you want corrections, let me know.) down in your neck of the woods (Alabama/Georgia). John's father, Robert E. Sasser, was a wonderful man whom I greatly respected. It was Uncle Bob that first did a lot of geneological work on our family. He died in 1979. John picked up where his father left off. Some of John's information was passed on to my father, George Sasser, the only remaining child of Taylor and Rose (Brock) Sasser, who submitted his information to the Laurel County Historical Society several years ago. That's probably more information than you wanted but if you need more, please feel free to contact me. John has an e-mail address at the U. of Cinn. if you need it, e-mail me privately. As Usual, Phil Sasser 1207 Kingston Ridge Rd. Cary, NC 27511 (919) 460-7277
A. H. SASSER After an illness of only a few days. A. H. Sasser died Tuesday morning, July 7, 1925 at his home in the south part of Enterprise. He was taken ill last Thursday after he had gone to work at the East Oregon mill and attending physicians could not satisfy themselves to the nature of his malady nor could they stay its progress. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2:30 o'clock at the Baptist church and will be conducted by Rev. R.E. Gilmore, paster of the Nazarene church. Abraham H. Sasser was born in Laurel county, Kentucky, April 5, 1864, and lived in his native state until 1903 when he came west, settling at Enterprise which remained his home to the end. He was married February 7, 1889, to Margaret E. Hammack, daughter of Rev. N. E. Hammack, before either family had come west. Mr. Sasser is survived by his widow, one sister living on Alder slope, Mrs. William Weaver, a sister in Kentucky and a brother in Oklahoma and the following children: Mrs. Nancy C. Tedders, Kentucky; Newton E. Sasser of Enterprise; Mrs Mary A. Daugherty of Enterprise, who is now at a sanatarium at Clarkston, Wash. ; Joseph Sasser, Mrs. Barbara McCormack, Chester Sasser, J. W. Sasser, Samuel Milton Sasser, Robert Sasser of Enterprise; Mrs. Louisa E. Stevens of California, who is on the way to Enterprise and will arrive before the funeral is held, and Susan E. and Foy A. Sasser of Enterprise. There are 30 grandchildren. All of the children are married except Milton, aged 24, and Foy, 14 , who resides at home with their mother. Two of Mr. Sasser's nieces are the wives of J. R. Hammack and W.J. Hammack. Mr. Sasser was an industrious and upright man, friendly and always ready to give a brother a lift. He worked for the East Oregon company for more than eight years, almost from the time the company started operations and everybody around the plant had a good word for him. He was converted at the age of nineteen, and continued in the faith until the end. He was a great lover and student of the Bible, having read the entire book three times and the New Testament several times. In his early Christian life he spent much time reading the Bible to his parents and all thru his life he spent much time reading his Bible to his family. He was devoted to singing old time hymns and spent many hours singing in the home. His life was exemplary to the family, having never taken the name of the Lord in vane. He was much devoted to his wife, children, and grand- children, much respected by all, and will be missed greatly. He joined the United Baptist church in early manhood and was faithful to that faith. (Taken from the Enterprise Chieftan, Enterprise, Oregon. Due to a few words being unreadable, I had to guess as to what they were.) Michael E. Sasser
My name is Reba McMillan and the reason I subscribed to the Sasser list is the close relationship of my line of Tuttles in Kentucky with the Sasser line. My mother's mother was a Tuttle. I have been very much more successful in tracing my Tuttle roots because of this list than I have the CRAWFORDs that my grandmother married into. Thank all of you for sharing info with me. I agree with Don... I am on other lists that have tightened down on what goes because there have been abuses which so far we haven't had. One group has 350 members and has to be run strictly business. With a name like Sasser in our background we are all related somewhere down the road! I also enjoy getting to know the people on a list. Here is my bio: My name is Debbie (Humfleet) Mauelshagen. I was born and raised in a small town about 30 miles from Detroit MI. My father was born and raised on the Humfleet family homestead in KY founded in the 1800's by William Umphlett and his wife Piety nee Sasser. He played in Mt. Olivet Cemetery where a few Sassers are buried, went to church in the Mt. Olivet Church and went to school in the one room schoolhouse there on the same property. I remember visiting the area as a young child and seeing the School, the chimney of the original homestead and a few tumbling down out buildings. I have some copies of some photos of the old home which I hope to post on my web page soon. I grew up in Walled Lake MI and moved away upon getting married in 1975 to Ralph Mauelshagen. We still lived in MI for another 2 years. After visiting my relatives in KY, AL, TN and GA one year on vacation, Ralph fell in love with the Atlanta area. A year later we moved there and stayed for 10 years. In 1981 my first child Laura was born and before she turned 6 we moved to Dallas TX where we are still today. Ralph works for Interstate Batteries as an IS Project Mgr (Computers) and I homeschool my now 15 year old daughter and also have a custom dressmaking and alteration business in my home. Since moving to TX we also have 2 more additions to the family, Karl Nathanael "Nathan" 3 1/2 and Susanna Joy just turned 2. I have to all consuming hobbies one of genealogy and the other smocking and making my young children's clothing. I am the "owner" of the Humfleet list on Rootsweb, it is new and very small and not very active but it has about 15 people from very different branches of the family. I thoroughly enjoy genealogy research in fact yesterday I finally got my first connection to the "old country" in one of my lines! I am just waiting on documentation! I started doing research on my tree about 12 years ago when Ralph's sister (who is married to my brother) took a class on it. She and I did some research together for a few years before we moved to TX. After I moved both of us dropped it for a number of years. I got started again last year when we got Internet access. In one of my forays into the world of the web I found Don, this was before SASSER-L was in existence. We swapped info and kept each other posted on what we were finding... he found MAISER and founded SASSER-L and here we are. Happy Hunting! Debbie www.isource.net/~ralph I do have some of my Lines posted on our web page. I am after my computer expert to do some revisions this weekend (Maybe?). Hello Sasser Group, Is there a John Sasser from Cincinnati, Ohio on the list??? If not does anybody on the list know John Sasser form Cincinnati??? Cordially, Earl Sasser ewsasser@worldnet.att.net
Hi everybody, I want to say that I am very fortunate to have found this group. I love the fact that I have no idea what the message is going to be about. Anyhow, I began searching my genealogy in February hoping to find the connection to my Cherokee heritage, but to my surprise I found the Sasser tribe instead. I was born in San Mateo, San Mateo County, CA June 22, 1965. I met my husband, Rene Morales, attending College of San Mateo in 1986. I moved to San Francisco in 1986 and have been here ever since. Rene and I got married on my birthday in 1990. I have studied Art, Photography, and just recently received an OA at the California Culinary Academy. Right now I am working on putting together a book of poetry and artwork, pieces I have done over the last six years. Hopefully I will get a scanner soon so I can send some images. Also, I have tons of great recipes if anybody needs something tried and true. My friend Erin calls me every once in a while to get consultation for her dinner parties. I hope to find out more info on the Sasser line, especially when my Aunt Carol moves to Arkansas, gets her computer, and joins our group. She will have alot more time then me. Maureen
Postings of poems , happy birthdays etc. are fine on this list . I started sasser-l so we cousins could get to know each other's lines, history and about each of other. I hope we all continue sharing any thing that might be of interest to one member as well as everyone. You don't know until you post it :-) 1. How do you'all feel? 2. how do you feel about each of us posting a short bio on ourselves? Thanks, Don L Sasser p.s.MS CORNELIA B HOLLAND has been " Unsubscribe please"... Thanks, Don Sasser ---------- From: owner-ky-footsteps@sirius.dsenter.com on behalf of MRS BEULAH A FRANKS Sent: Friday, July 25, 1997 9:20 AM To: ky-footsteps@sirius.dsenter.com Subject: KY-F: Bio: Glass.BC-Scott Co. History of Bourbon, Scott, Harrison and Nicholas Counties, Kentucky, ed. by William Henry Perrin, O. L. Baskin & Co., Chicago, 1882. p. 811. [Scott County] [Georgetown Precinct] BEERI CHRISTY GLASS, Farmer and Capitalist, was born December 4, 1804, six miles from Georgetown in Scott County, Kentucky, and died at his home in Georgetown, June 20, 1874. His father, William Glass, was a native of Pennsylvania, emigrated to Kentucky at an early day, and became one of the most substantial and successful farmers of Scott County. Beeri C. Glass received a good education in the best schools and academies then existing in his native county, and made his first step in life as a teacher; although he probably taught school at intervals for several years, it does not appear that he had any design of pursuing that avocation as a profession. January 20, 1846, he was appointed agent of the McCracken Fund. He resided on his father's farm until 1847, and was actively engaged with him in the various interests of the place. Under the old State Constitution, he was several years Sheriff of Scott County, but had little desire for political position. In 1847 he removed to Georgetown, where he continued to reside during his life. May 17, 1848, he was appointed one of the commissioners to lay out Scott County into eight election precincts. November 19, 1849, he was appointed County Treasurer. He was one of the founders of the Farmers' Bank of Georgetown and remained in its directory until his death. He had accumulated considerable means, having been remarkably successful in everything he undertook with earnestness, before settling in Georgetown, and mainly occupied his time for years in loaning and speculation on his capital. His name was associated with all the important interests of his community. He contributed largely to the organization and building of Georgetown College, and was one of its most active managing trustees, and was connected with the Board of Trustees during his life. He was a leader in every movement of advantage to the town, and was one of its most active, influential, and successful business men. In politics, he was always a Democrat; had strong convictions and adhered to them at all hazard, but was courteous and deferential when any personal feeling of principal of individual honor was involved. When the civil war broke out, he espoused the cause of the South, and, had his health and age permitted, would have entered the army in defense of his principles. In 1852 he united with the Baptist Church and, until his health and hearing failed, he was one of its most active and valuable members. On November 15, 1858, he resigned both the agency of the McCracken Fund and the office of County Treasurer. He was one of the Trustees of Georgetown for several years, and held various positions of trust in the community; lived an exemplary, active life, was open hearted and charitable; started out in life a poor boy, and, by superior judgment, business ability, and unyielding perseverance, succeeded, mainly unaided, in accumulating a fortune. He was a man of fine habits; of strong, sympathetic nature; was strongly devoted to his family; was a man of fine sentiment and feeling, which he displayed liberally in his home and in his personal friendships; and died universally regretted and respected, leaving the world better by his having lived in it. Mr. Glass was married in 1847, to Miss Margaret A. Kenny, daughter of Joseph B. Kenney, a prominent citizen of Georgetown, a lady of great personal and social worth, who still survives him. Their only child, Victor Kenney Glass, married Miss Bettie Force, of Georgetown and resides in that place. Beulah Wiley Franks wrfc71a@prodigy.com

I do not know the specific reason the group from Wayne Co. NC moved with (soon to be CSA Gen) Whitfield, to South Alabama, but about that time, there was another exodus from that area into Hardeman Co. TN. After the 1800 census, a large group from Old Dobbs Co. NC (Johnston specifically) moved from that area to Davidson/Rutherford Co. TN. The explaination I believe for all these moves is new land was opening up and the old land was wearing out. This area of NC had been populated since the mid 1700s, so it was time to move on. Maureen, The only Sasser relatives I know are the ones I mentioned in my previous post to you. Cornelia Holland
