This came to me from another list. It contains some GREAT words of wisdom. I have been doing this a while and I found somethings that I did not know about. Happy Hunting! Dodge[SMTP:arnie708@SILICON.EMAIL.NET] Sent: Thursday, August 07, 1997 3:30 PM To: Multiple recipients of list KYROOTS Subject: Beginner's Page ***************************************************************************** 8/7/97 FOR BEGINNERS. I have been seeing a lot of newbies getting into genealogy work and wondering what to do first. I felt it might be appropriate to provide some insights for these people, and some starting points. USING E-MAIL. ....There are two main classes of e-mail sources for genealogy data. One deals with surnames. It is possible to put your name on a list to receive all mail sent out to subscribers (free) about that name. The other class deals with locations. You can put your name on a list server to receive all mail sent to the list for the state or other division, that most interests you. Some examples follow: Surname Lists Location Lists Arnold arnold-l@rootsweb.com Kentucky kyroots-request@lsv.uky.edu type subscribe in msg body save returned instruction page Missouri missouri-l-request@rootsweb.com type subscribe in msg body Norcal norcal-l-request@rootsweb.com ....Naturally, there are far too many of these lists to do more here than whet your interest. The Location Lists are more or less organized under the U.S.A aegis. The easiest way to find out the address of the area that interests you is to subscribe to one list, and then just read the messages until you see what you want, or you can send a message to the list asking if a list exists for the area of your interest. Frequently you will see a message about a surname on one of the location lists. This is an easy way to pick up on new information. Or, again, you can simply send a message asking about surname lists. USING THE INTERNET ....Once you have mastered the use of e-mail in obtaining genealogical data, you will want to explore the use of the Internet for this purpose. You will not be surprised to find that this area of study is largely organized geographically by State. There is an organization devoted to the presentation of genealogical data for the entire U.S.A. This organization presents a master URL (Uniform Resource Location) site. You can go to this site and link to any or all of the states. After you are connected to a state page, you will see that there is a further division by county. You can click on any one of the counties and discover whatever data and other information has been collected at that site about the history and people of the area. There you will also find links to other data and other sources. You will also note that there are numerous e-mail addresses so you can contact people concerned with that page. http://www.genhomepage.com/FHC.html Mormon Church FHC addresses. http://www.usgenweb.com/ General Inforation http://www.ancestry.com/ Search SS Death Index free! http://www.rootsweb.com/~bwo Books we own http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/ Mailing lists http://www.best.com/~bearbr/genealogy/caindexes/blm.html General Land Office Auto. http://bobcat.etsu.edu/octa/trailmap.htm Westward Ho Trails http://www.concentric.net/~mikerice/helplist.shtml Lookup Volunteers list!!!! http:/www.rootsweb.com/~mogenweb/mo Missouri Master list* http:/www.dsenter.com/~trice/ky/index.html Kentucky Master list* http://www.gendex.com/gendex/ General index of Surnames http://users.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html General index, lists, sites *There are links on these pages that will take you to every other state. FAMILY HISTORY CENTERS The local Family History Center in your town can help you with genealogcal information. Call in advance. Check phone book for Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. If you can't find the FHC call any of the numbers listed as Bishop and ask them. Once you have the number call and schedule the computer for 1 hr at a time convenient as their open times permit. Then go there and check the area called Ancestral File first. After that check the area called IGI (International Genealogical Index) That will let you check the records in Salt Lake for your family holdings.
Don, I would love to get a copy of this letter and any documents that you may have from the Sassers in GA. I am mostly concerned with the Littleton Albert Sasser family but I am a packrat and will take anything I can get on a connected family. Thanks, Julie C. Faulkner If anyone on the list would like any of my Sasser info, please contact me by email and I will send what I have. JFaulk6428@aol.com
I have borrowed this book via an inter library loan program. I will have this in my possesion until the 27th of August. If you have family from N. C. during the time period 1690-1760 and would like me to look up information let me know. Also, I have recently loaded Windows NT onto my system, and have not found all of the addresses which I had compiled previously. So I believe the following information is for Doug Sherman (?) regarding the CHEEK family. In this abstract I have found the following: Ann Cheek, James Cheek, Jane Cheek (wife of Richard), Jane Cheek (daughter of Richard), John Cheek, Cheeks Mill Creek, land on...., Randolph Cheek, Richard Cheek, Richard Cheek,Jr., Richard Cheek, Robert Cheek, William Cheek, Wm. Cheek. You may already have the information pertaining to the people listed above. But if not let me know and I can scan the info and send it to you. Carroll, So far, I know of only one child of ELISHA SASSR, born in 1801. ELISHA married ELIZA ANN STARLING. However, they very likely had other children. The one I know of was ELI SASSER Sr., born 22 Feb., 1826 and died 10 Mar., 1890. ELI Sr. was married three times: (1) Peggy Ann Garner (Garne) in 1846, Eliza Garner (Garne) in 1849 and Mary Howell about 1876. He had at least one son by his second marriage, ELI Jr., born in 1861 and died 1905. He had at least three children by his third wife: George Washington, Wiley Cleveland and Luther Blaine Sasser. ELI Sr. left a will in 1890. I do not have a copy of this so I can't tell you what all it says. It is on file at the Johnston County courthouse in Smithfield. Change the name of the father of ELISHA to just plain HENRY SASSER (NOT "John Henry"). HENRY SASSER was born in 1784 and died in 1872. He was married twice and has four children by his first marriage to ANN (maiden name may have been BOYETTE): ELISHA, STEPHEN, ELLEN ANN ("Allen") and ELIZABETH ("Lizzie"). He married second to ELIZABETH (whose maiden name may have been GRANT): they had four children, including WILLIAM HENRY, "BUZZY", ELIZA JANE and ELIZABETH. Henry left a will dated 17 June, 1872, on file in the Wayne County courthouse at Goldsboro. He died at New Hope in Wayne County, NC. I have not been able to learn yet who the parents of this HENRY was. More later... Your cuz, Robert Earl Woodham
Dear Cousins, If you have copies of records of ANY kind on our family, I would greatly appreciate it if you could send us xerox copies of these. For many years, I have been trying to create a Sasser Family National Library where records and copies of public documents of all types can be preserved for our family. With such a Family Library, future generations will not have to traipse all over the country looking for information about their ancestors. Instead, they can learn about their kinfolks from one central source about ALL of our family. Here are some of the types of records and documents I am trying to gather and preserve on ALL our family (including descendants): deeds land grants & homesteads marriage licenses marriage records (from family Bibles, church records, etc.) death certificates birth certificates estate records (court records of a person who left property) old letters family Bible records (include a copy of the title page with the year printed) wills military records (of all wars and of any kind; service records, discharge papers, newspaper articles, etc.) obituaries newspaper articles wedding notices (in newspapers, church bullitins) US and state census records cemetery records (tombstone inscriptions) funeral home records (most keep books of funerals with important info) published information (from books) If you have a copy of any such document or record on our family PLEASE make xerox copies of these and mail to me. If you have the information but don't have a copy of the original document, send the info (you can do this by email). Send this to me at: Robert Earl Woodham 1130 Celia Drive Columbus, Georgia 31907 The generations to come will thank you.
I have finally received a copy of a copy of the original letter Adin Sasser wrote to his son. The date is August 20, 1864. I will send a copy, along with his marriage licence and other documents to to Robert Earl Woodham and any one else who send me their address. It is not a excellent copy but it is readable.... Don Sasser ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- August 20, 1864 Dear Son I take the present opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know that we are all well, hoping this will come to hand and find you all well. I left the post of Pittsburg last Monday morning to attend Circuit Court between Dickson Sasser and the Common Wealth and the case being laid over by the Common Wealth. I came on home next day for the first time since April. I received your friendly letter that you sent with K.D. Wyrichs letter and the letter you to James Waggoner. Him and Jo Waggoner left today on their way to Redbird. Jos case was continued, some few people was threatening to mob him but the excitement is not so great as I expected. Some of them evil men and seducers is tired of Lincoln. I was glad to hear from you all and I was glad to hear that you was with kind people that is willing to pay you a living price for your labor. You wanted to know the price of Mountain Yoke of cattle. One hundred to one hundred twenty five for no. 1 Yoke of cattle. Though some times you might get a small yoke for fifty or sixty. I thank you for our friendly admonition but I dont know how to do any better now. I am working for the support of the family. I have nobody to help me. Eli is going to school now, but I dont know whether he will stick to it or not. I have to go back and leave them. I have not raised any thing this year and of course have it to buy. I get sixty dollars every month and is the best I can do under my present condition. Louisa has no book to go to school. Little Jo is as fat as ever, but we have no home to go to that we can say is our own. I got a letter from Thomas Sasser dated the 5th of August. He is still at the same place and doing well as could be expected. If you want to write him, direct your letter to Nashville Tenn. He says he thinks he will get to stay there till his time is up, and then he is coming home. Lord grant it may be so. Jim Waggoner will bring your things up here in a week or two and take his mother home with him. He told me this morning to scroll a few lines for him. They are all well and he has just been to London and is on his way home. You mother and the children have plenty to live on though everything is very high, but corn crops are very good in this neighborhood. Wheat was indifferent, but if the people are not robbed of their corn there is no danger of starvation, yet the leaders are trying to rally the voters for Lincoln, but some of them will not hear. Now is the most critical time and the most dangerous time since the war commenced, but there is no use to predict what us coming but every eye can see and every ear can hear the times is getting worse, and the people are going back into heathenism and barbarity and if this thing goes on four years longer where will we all be? The health of this county is tolerable good , the connection are all well as far as I know. Though I hear of some flu and some fever. Give my respects to Kate and them two little babies and if we meet no more in this world lets us all try to be ready when the summons comes to meet in a better world. Where the rattle of drums and the roaring of cannons and tongues of lairs can never never disturb us anymore. Farewell Adin Sasser
Debbie, Reading you loud and clear here. I got your e-mail about copies of Henry Sasser's deeds. I'll put them in the mail tomorrow. Gotta run......this work stuff really gets in the way of important matters such as the Sasser geneology. As usual, Phil Sasser

To all cousins: I just returned from the SASSER reunion held at Clemmons State Forest near Clayton, NC, in Johnston County ... county of origin for many Sasser lines! (See plans for next year at bottom of text.) There were about 20 people there including three of us SASSER-L subscribers: Phil Sasser <PSASSER105@aol.com> of Cary, NC, and Doug Sherman <Dougsherma@aol.com> of Durham, NC; both of the Laurel County, KY, line; and myself from the Cullen Joseph Sasser line that relocated from Wayne County to Stanly County, NC, in the mid 1850s. We enjoyed fellowship, traded stories, shared family histories, looked at photos of our ancestors, and made new friends. We continue to work to find that these new friends are indeed related to all of us! This reunion turns out to be a local line eminating from Jasper SASSER of Johnston County, NC, as follows: 1 Jasper Sasser 2 Elijah Thomas Sasser b: 1851 d: 1896 + Evaline P. The plan is to have it at the same place: Clemmons State Educational Forest, 12 miles southeast of Raleigh on US-70. The site is just northwest of Clayton, NC, in the edge of Johnston County. It is hoped that larger numbers will come with better promotion and that an ever-increasing number of lines will be included. We hope to outgrow the facility. OK, good news: your mailing list is ready to roll. Briefly (very), people can subscribe to your list in mail mode by sending a message to KIRBY-KERBY-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains the word subscribe and nothing else. If they prefer digest mode, they should send the command instead to KIRBY-KERBY-D-request@rootsweb.com. To unsubscribe, they should send the command "unsubscribe" to KIRBY-KERBY-L-request@rootsweb.com (if in mail mode) or KIRBY-KERBY-D-request@rootsweb.com (if in digest mode.) To switch from one mode to the other, they should unsubscribe from one and then subscribe to the other. There is no "no mail" mode -- if they want messages to stop, they should simply unsubscribe. To post to both KIRBY-KERBY-L and KIRBY-KERBY-D, messages should be sent to KIRBY-KERBY-L@rootsweb.com. Messages sent there will appear both places. To all Henry Sasser Officianatos, A deed dated in 1815 puts Henry's property "on the sides of Poplar Branch". Anybody got a clue? Is this Poplar creek to the south of Buffalo Creek but north of the present U.S. Rt. 70? Has anyone determined the exact spot of either William or Henry's farms in Johnston Co.? It is interesting to note that Thomas and Jesse Kirby helped to do the survey. Y'all may have a copy of this deed already but if you don't, I can send you one. For the cause, Phil Sasser
In looking at the Johnston Co. NC census of 1784 there were 3 Sasser's listed: William, Abil (Abel), and Arthur. Henry and William Sasser were both listed in the wills of both Arthur and Arthur's daughter Edith. I was wondering if anyone had any information as to the relationship between William (if this is indeed the father of Henry) and Arthur and Abel? Brothers perhaps? I am also looking for information on William's wife Martha Bishop. I did find a Bishop family (Thomas) in a later census. Does anybody know anything about the Bishops. I am ultimately trying to get to William & Martha's ancestors and am having a hard time. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Phil Sasser
