Computer viruses CANNOT be transmitted by simply reading E-mail. They can only be transmitted through the DOWNLOADING & OPENING of ATTACHED FILES. TEXT cannot transmit a virus; only EXECUTABLE FILES are capable of doing so. Unfortunately, even some system administrators are not aware of this, however this info is well documented in AOL's information on how viruses are transmitted. Everyone else, please check with your internet service provider. I have received countless panic warnings from well-meaning friends over the last months regarding viruses that supposedly are transmitted via e-mail messages. Perpetuating the panic by forwarding the messages on to other users is as difficult to stamp out as a chain letter; it keeps popping up in the most unexpected places. Everyone should contact their internet provider to verify the accuracy of their information BEFORE they pass it on to others whose inexperience with computers & the internet make them vulnerable to unnecessary fears & panic. Because there are indeed some pretty destructive viruses floating around out there, one should ALWAYS exercise care in downloading any files from the internet, whether they be attached to e-mail or not. The best defense is to know the person/business/entity you are accepting the file from before you download it, don't accept any file from anyone you are not sure of, and have good virus detecting software installed on your computer. McAfee & Norton both provide for updates to be downloaded from the internet, keeping virus detection current. Finally, don't forget to BACK UP YOUR FILES REGULARLY. Best wishes to all, Fay
Sometimes these virus can be real; sometimes hoaxes. http://www.umich.edu/~wwwitd/virus-busters/index.html at the University of Michigan has a nice page on this. -- ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Elbert L. To: The Sasser Group From: Glenn E. Perry I received a telephone call last night from Joyce Gilbert Cottongim, a cousin on almost all sides--daughter of Wallace Gilbert and Audrey Sasser Gilbert--who grew up near where I lived as a child. There are several matters of possible interest to some members of the group. One is that Joyce apparently has a lot of material to share, notably the papers of her first cousin, Robert Helton (much of the information in which was provided by Joyce's mother). I had even heard that many of those papers had been lost, but that apparently is not the case. Joyce says that the pages with geneological information were removed from the Henry Sasser Bible and deposited in the state archives in Frankfort, KY. She understood that the archives would only accept the originals, not photocopies. Although I have mixed feelings about this Bible being dismembered, hopefully the pages will be safer now and we can get xerox copies. I still have not heard from Paul and Yvonne Harris, who reportedly have the Bible and to whom I wrote about this matter several months ago. Again, I am reporting hearsay, but Joyce seems to know what she is talking about. Finally, Joyce is anxious to help with the various geneological charts and apparently has a lot to offer. I am thinking not only of Don's chart of the Sassers but also of Jim Smith's and Phyllis Rogers's work on the descendants of the original Wallace Gilbert. Her address is Joyce Cottongim, 6389 Cincinnati-Dayton Road, Middletown, OH 45044. Tel.--513-777-3835. ***************************************** Glenn E. Dear Martina, So far, I nor anyone I know of has been able to learn who the wife of BENJAMIN SASSER was. Nor any proof on who his parents were. The reason for this is that he was apparently married in either old Dobbs County (the records of which were burned and destroyed in 1871) or he was married in adjoining Wayne County, where he was living in 1779. Many of the older records of Wayne County have also been lost, especially the marriage bonds. According to the 1790 census records of Wayne County, he had at least 5 sons and 2 daughters. The sons included your ancestor, FREDERICK, JAMES, JOEL and JOSEPH. I haven't yet identified the other son nor the two daughters. BENJAMIN was born 7 May, 1755 at Stoneybrook in what is now Lenoir County and died 4 Mar., 1833 in Columbus County, NC. When Benjamin sold land in Wayne County in Sept., 1796, his son FREDERICK was a witness to the deed. FREDERICK was born about 1777 in Wayne County and died in Columbus County (no date of death). He married ELIZABETH WARD, daughter of MATHEW WARD and ANN ELLISON. They had at least 5 children. Would appreciate info on your direct line from Frederick. Your cuz, Robert Earl Woodham
Hi everyone! I am new to the discussion list so I know I've missed a lot of valuable information about the Sasser family. I hope it is OK if I make a query concerning my Sasser on this discussion group's mail. My Great Great Great Great Grandfather was Frederick Sasser who married Elizabeth Ward. They lived in an area known as the White Marsh in what is now Columbus Co NC. He was born about 1770-1780 and served in the War of 1812. I believe his father to be Benjamin Sasser, a Revolutionary War Veterans, who in his pension request said he was born May 7, 1755 in Dobbs CO NC (the name later changed to Lenoir County). He mentions a son Frederick living in the White Marsh area. I am trying to find out who Benjamin married, who his children were as well as his parents, siblings etc. I was very interested in reading about Thomas Aden Sasser because of the similarities in the name of his father, Henry Benjamin Sasser and that of my ancestor. Is there anyone who can maybe help me with this family? I am glad to be a part of your group.. Martina SImmons
Don, I received that exact same letter from them on my Dickerson surname. I never replied to it or ordered the book. These people must be getting city directories and some vague history and making a bundle on unsuspecting genealogists!!!!! Julie C. Faulkner
Dear Sasser cousins, The only book ever printed so far on our family (that I know of) was the book "OF ONE DOZEN SASSERS", on the descendants of THOMAS SASSER Sr. who settled in Screven County, Georgia and whose descendants are primarily in Screven County and Southwest Georgia and south Alabama. I have been working on gathering info and records for a book about our family for more than 30 years now. One of these days... Your cuz, Robert Earl Woodham
We picked up a book like this for another family name a short while ago. It is pretty much as folks have been saying, only we found it to be beneficial for our purposes. My husband is 1st gen. German-American and his father had literally no knowledge of any family in Germany and this book is helping us track down information from folks in Germany. On the Sasser book though it seems that most of us already have as much or more info than they do. So unless you are desperate to track down a long lost cousin and want to take a chance on the book it may not be worth it. You could also just do a Yahoo People Search and do better.
