Sasser Fans, Can you shed some light on the court cases mentioned in this letter. Would love to know the details. Also interested on more history regarding the Sassers during the Civil War. Seems the Laurel Sassers were with the Union. Regards, Treasure Smith The following was from a newspaper clipping. It had been trimmed out so that the date and name of the publication is unknown to me. Can anyone shed more light on the contents of this letter? I think I know why there are a few preachers in this family now. Note: Wyrick spelling. Civil War Days Are Pictured In Letter Prized By Luther Woman An insight into life during Civil War days is presented in a letter that Mrs. Mary Morrow has prized for the last 35 years. The letter was written by Mrs. Morrow's grandfaterh to her father. The letter follows: August 20, 1864 Dear son: I take the present opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know that we are all well, hoping this will come to hand and find you all well. I left the Post of Pittsburg last Monday morning to attend Circuit Court between Dickson Sasser and the Common Wealth and the case being laid over by the Common Wealth. I came on home next day for the first time since April. I received your friendly letter that you sent with K. D. Wyrich's letter and the letter you sent to James Waggoner. Him and Jo Waggoner left today on their way to Redbird. Jo's case was continued. Some few peo;le was threatening to mob him but the excitement is not so great as I expected. Some of them evil men and seducers is tired of Lincoln. I was glad to hear from you all and I was glad to hear that you was with kind people that is willing to pay you a living price for your labor. You wanted to know the price of Mountain Yoke of cattle. One hundred to one hundred twenty-five for no. 1 yoke. Though sometimes you might get a small yoke for fifty or sixty. I thank you for our friendly admonition but I don't know how to do any better now. I am working for the support of the family. I have nobody to help me. Eli is going to school now, but I don't know whether he will stick to it or not. I have to go back and leave them. I have not raised anything this year and of course have it to buy. I get sixty dollars every month and is the best I can do under my present condition. Louisa has no book to go to school. Little Jo is as fat as ever, but we have no home to go to that we can say is our own. I got a letter from Thomas Sasser, dated the 5th of August. He is still at the same place and doing as well as could be expected. If you want to write to him, direct your letter to Nashville, Tenn. He says he thinks he will stay there till his time is up, and then he is coming home. Lord grant it may be so. Jim Waggoner will bring your things up here in a week or two and take his mother home with him. He told me this morning to scroll a few lines for him. They are all well and he has just been to London and is on his way home. Your mother and the children have plenty to live on though everything is very high, but corn crops are very good in this neighborhood. Wheat was indifferent, but if the people are not robbed of their corn there is no danger of starvation, yet the leaders are trying to rally the voters for Lincoln, but some of them will not hear. Now is the most critical time and the most dangerous time since the war commenced, but there is no use to predict what is coming but every eye can see and every ear can hear the times is getting worse, and the people are going back into heathenism and barbarity and if this thing goes on four years longer where will we be? The health of this country is tolerable good, the connection are all well as far as I know. Though I hear of some flu and some fever. Give my respects to Kate and them two little babies and if we meet no more in this world lets us all try to be ready when the summons comes to meet in a better world. Where the rattle of drums and the roaring of cannons and tongues of liars can never never disturb us anymore. Farewell, Adin Sasser

(handwritten to Linna Sasser Smith) Dear Mrs. Smith, I am trying to compile a history of the Sasser family - especially all decendents of Henry Sasser who came to KY from N.C. in 1824. All of the Okla. Sasser information I obtained from Sharon O'Donell, also all Sasser names in your phonebook. I know it is asking a great deal but would you please look over the chart I am sending and please fill in any information you may be able to supply. I am very interested in the dates when the Sassers came to Oklahoma, the death date of Catherine Wyrick, where Henry died and where he is buried, as well as where hes children were married. I have been working on this for two years and enjoy it so much. I have found the Sassers in N.C. as early as 1737 - there was a Wm. Saucer in Norfolk Co. VA in 1643 but I can't seem to get past the 1737, perhaps more searching will turn something up. My sister and I have been to KY and N.C. searching the court records but it will take a great deal more time than we had. I hope I'll be able to visit N.C. again. I wrote Mrs. Gertrude Crab and (your sister) Mrs. Jewell Martin but nether answered. Perhaps you could call and talk to thes people and get their information for our family line - I would be more than willing to pay for the toll calls. I suppose most people don't really understand when they receive a letter asking who their grandfather was. I'll close for now hoping I hear from you soon, and thank you so very much. The following veterans of the 7 KY who were living in Clay County at the time of the 1890 Clay County Special Census cannot be identified by unit from the census data. However, the Adj. General's Report does give their units. John Carol Company B Dave Bowlin Company E Henry Freeman Company E Squire Smallwood Company E
According to the 1890 Special Census, several veterans of the 7th KY or their widows were living in Clay County at that time, including T. T. Garrard, who was recorded as being a Brigadier General. The transcribed copy that I have contains additional information taken from the Adjutant General's Report on Kentucky; e.g., enlistment & discharge dates for most of the men. Altogether, 300 veterans of the Civil War or their widows lived in Clay County in 1890. Of that number, 13 had served in the CSA, and roughly 33 had served in units from other states. The rest were from KY Infantry units 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 14, 23, 24, 26, 47, 49. Also KY Cavalry units 11, 14, 39, and the 88th KY Batt. The 1890 Special Census was taken from the pension roles. In some cases the name of the soldier was known, but his regiment was not. There were 37 such cases in Clay County. I will try to give the whole census in the next few days, and will list these veterans along with the rest. For now, I will list the veterans of the 7th by company. Unless otherwise designated, they held the rank of Private. I have transcribed the name as it was written, and some of them are misspelled. If I know the correct spelling, I have put it in parentheses by the name. I have also designated when it was a widow and not the veteran who was listed in the census. To: The Sasser List, Our line moving to Oklahoma may have been much later that other lines. Our Sasser line settled in Bruno, Marion Co., Arkansas about nine miles from Yellville and right in the middle of the Ozark Mountains. Some of the Sasser's went to Christian Co., Missouri north of the Ozark Mountains. Our line traveled south to Mulberry, Arkansas in the Fort Smith area of Arkansas. Three of Andrew Jackson Sasser's sons married three Willmon girls. The Willmon's were from Mulberry. Benjamin Aden Sasser married Mae Jane Willmon; John Birda Sasser married Mable Willmon; Leslie Oren Sasser married Clare Ines Willmon. Aunt Mable had Polio and she walked with a crutch because of her deformed foot, nevertheless it didn't seem to set her back any. She was the dearest sweetest lady and boy o' boy could her cook. My Grandfather (Leslie Oren Sasser) and Grandmother (Clare Ines Sasser) set up house in the Mulberry area and did some farming. As to the reasons of their move to Oklahoma I didn't have a clue so I wrote to my sister, Barbara. After I received this reply I ask her permission to send the message to the Sasser list: >Earl, I got your letter this morning asking about why we moved to OK. >Mother often said there was no work for Grandfather in AR, so he went to >OK with the family, first to work in the oil fields. They, Grandfather, >Grandmother, Dad and Clayton, went back to AR to visit and Dad took Mom >out. She worked for the doctor at the time and was only 14 years old. >Dad went back to AR and married Mom and they moved to OK. I am not real >sure how many times Dad went to see Mom before they got married, she >didn't say or I don't remember. I do know Mom & Dad lived with Granddad >and Grandma when they first married. Dad was in school and Mom worked. > I think she started at Pop Hicks. Is that the right name? She worked >there for a long time. Even after she had me. I understand I had a >black nanny but Mom didn't work after she had you. Do you remember >hearing all of this? I am sure you do. Grandfather used to tell of >all the hard work in the oil fields and how many men either got killed or >died working there. Sue Granddad was talking to both of us about the >work. Do you remember? Grandma said once they thought they were >living high on the hog when Granddad brought in $10 a week from the oil >fields and she sewed for people getting a couple dollars for each coat or >outfit she made. Boy was she good at sewing for people and cut out the >patterns on news paper or anything she could fine. I remember one time >she said she made a blouse for someone in town and used old paper that >meat had been wrapped in. > >Earl I am sorry I really don't remember all Mom or Grandma or Granddad >told me. Wish I had been wise enough to take notes. Boy could we write >a book now huh? > >Hope this much helps. > >Barb's > In this message that my sister sent to my younger sister and me it appears that the reason for the move was economical. The restaurant my Mom worked in, POP HICK'S is still there as an old Highway 66 restaurant. If you ever drive through Clinton, Oklahoma stop at Pop Hick's. The old timers still meet there in the morning talking about when old 66 came through town. Earl Sasser EWSass@writeme.com
Hi Don, The book I am talking about is called "Claudia - The Story of Colonel Harland Sanders' Wife" by edward G. Klemm, Jr. Courier - Jorunal Litho Co. - Louisville, Ky. It was copyrighted in 1980. The Library of Congress Catalog Card No. 79-56639 The ISBN # is 0-89144-102-6 "Just as the trees of the farm were rooted in the soil so also was Claudia's family deep-rooted to the land. Her great-grandfather on her mother's side was named Jesse Sasser. He had come to Kentucky with his wife and had settled his family in Laurel County before the War Between the States, and from her earliest childhood Claudia heard stories about the war and about this great-grandfather who left home to fight with the Union Army. She was to learn of his adventures and of his death in the fighting somewhere in Tennessee or Georgia. The family never was able to learn the details of his death nor of the incidents surrounding it. His body was never recovered and his end has remained a mystery to this day." It goes on to briefly mention Daniel Boone, another branch of the family and also mentions her great-great-grandfather Glass. I don't have Claudia entered into my Family Tree Maker program yet because I don't have her parents. I have written to the relative who sent me a copy of the book and have asked her if she has the information. Claudia's parents names were Jerry and Nancy Ledington. I will be happy to share with you any information I get. Sherry

Hi, My name is Sherry and I am researching the surname Ledington. I have some info on my Ledington and line and I think I have someone who is going to send me some more. The surname Sasser rang a bell as I have just recieved a copy of a book called "Claudia". Claudia was a Ledington. She married Col. Sanders, the chicken man, and it seems to me her maternal grandfather or gr. grandfather was a Sasser. I haven't had time to read much of it yet. Does any of this fit in with what you are researching? Sherry Does any one have links to Ledington?????? Thanks Don Sasser
