To: The Sasser group From: Glenn E. Perry Maybe my observations are too obvious, but Earl's question about first names caused me to think again about some interesting aspects of the names Henry and Nancy Kirby Sasser gave to their children. No son was named for Henry or Henry's father at least until child #9 (son #5), i.e., William Henry Crawford Sasser. And that had to await a year when there was a presidential candidate named William Henry Crawford. (As I pointed out in an earlier message, the name is written--as odd as it seems--as William Henry Crawood--not Crawford--in the Bible. Did Henry later decide he didn't like the Georgian who had presumably been his choice for president in 1824, or did somebody else write the names in the Bible?) There seems to have been a preference for the names of maternal ancestors. Child #8 (daughter #4) was named for Henry's mother, Martha Bishop. Child #11 (son #7), i.e., Jesse, was named for his maternal grandfather, Jesse Kirby. (I have wondered whether his full name was Jesse Kirby Sasser; I am not quite sure whether my grandmother told me of such a tradition or whether this is merely a possibility that has sporadically come to my mind. Child #13 (daughter #5) was named for her maternal grandmother, Patience Watkins Kirby. One of the names was from the Old Testament (Adin), as I mentioned once before. The name of one daughter, Piety, represented the parents' religiosity. The name Martha of course is from the New Testament as well as being that of Henry's mother. The name James Henderson was that of an important figure in the early settlement of Kentucky. It is interesting that Henry gave that name to his newborn son one year before moving to Kentucky. Perhaps in writing this quick note I have overlooked the significance of some of the names. And trying to read Henry and Nanny Sasser's minds at this time may seem rather silly anyway. I know that for the English it goes like this, and from I have seen Irish pretty much follow the same naming pattern; First Son or First Daughter - paternal grand parent Second Son or Second Daughter - the parent Third Son or Third Daughter - maternal grand parent So for example you have; William Freeman son of John and Hannah marries Mary Cording daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Children: John William Hannah Thomas Mary Elizabeth I am pretty sure this is one of the traditional Naming patterns. The following biographical sketch of General Theophilus S. Garrard has been exerpted from "Union Regiments of Kentucky," which was compiled in 1895. "GEN. THEOPHILUS S. GARRARD was born near Manchester, KY, June 7, 1812. He was a member of the Lower House of the Kentucky Legislature in 1843-4; served through the Mexican War as a captain in the 16th US Infantry; went to California, on the discovery of gold in 1849, by the overland route; remained in the mines 15 months, and then returned, by way of Panama, to Kentucky. He was elected to the state Senate in 1857, resigned to become a candidate for Congress and elected a state Senator again in 1861. At Camp Dick Robinson, in the fall of that year, he was appointed a colonel of the 3rd KY, US Volunteer Infantry, promoted to brigadier-general November 29, 1862; served with great credit until he was mustered out on April 4, 1864, on account of a serious affliction of the eyes. He has since resided in Clay County, KY."
This is an part of a article that was written by Douglas B Sherman. Doug is a member of out list. I will forward you query to the list. Perhaps Doug or someone can answer your query better than I Thanks, Don, Sasser %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% "The dates of death for William and Martha SASSER are unknown. One may speculate that they died between 1810 and 1820 on the basis of the Federal Census records. Since Henry SASSER had received property from his father in 1801, it is doubtful that there would have been any sale of estate upon his death. While it is true that a William SASSER died in Smithfield in March 1815 "of the prevailing Epidemic or Camp Plague," he was not Henry SASSERs father. This William SASSER was instead the son of Elizabeth BLACKMAN, former wife of the deceased Josiah SASSER of Wayne County. Furthermore, one of the buyers at Edith SASSER's estate sale in 1816 was a William SASSER, which could suggest that Henry SASSERs father was still alive at that time." ---------- From: ANN SUTTON Ables Sent: Saturday, November 15, 1997 9:44 AM To: Don Sasser Subject: Re: Hi Ann I am a Sutton lister, but I hope I am a Sasser too.
