    1. [SASSER-L] Sasser, our Family Index
    2. Robert Earl Woodham
    3. Dear Cousins, Several years ago, I created a unique type of family index. It started out because I found I was spending so much time while on long distance telephone calls looking up info for kinfolks. I was embarrassed for wasting their time and money, so I started writing down EVERY name of ALL my Daddy's family that I knew of and the person's daddy's name so I could "identify" which person the caller was talking about. That didn't help much when they were talking about a particular John Wesley--so I added the person's year of birth. Pretty soon, I had added the place of birth and an ID for the father because I found more than one person by the same name who also had fathers by the same name. I also added a column for nicknames since we all seem to have one and you won't believe the number of folks who don't know their own parents full names nor especially their grandparents. I ended up with this: Aris Sr. 1770 Dobbs Edward Jr. (E)46 Edward Harley Sr. 1810 Darlington William (A)70 John Thomas 1850 Dale John Robert (ED)10 John Wesley ("Wes") 1870 Dale John Thomas (JR)50 Rachel BEASLEY 1771 Dobbs Aris Sr. (E)70 Every person in the Index has the same family name. I later added wives and show their maiden name (if known) in the nickname column in bold letters (and underlined in the printed version). The columns above show the first name; middle name; nickname/maiden name of wives; year born; county where born; first name of father/husband; middle name of father/ husband/ and the "ID" of the father/husband. The ID lists the initials of this person's father and the year this person was born. With this Index system, you can look up any person (that I know of) and then start tracing their direct family line back as far as I know it. For instance, if you wanted to know who the parents of the John Wesley listed above--you would find he was born in 1870 in Dale County and he was the son of John Thomas. Since there are more than one John Thomas, look for one whose father's initials are "JR" and the John Thomas was born in 1850. This will take you back in the direct line as far as possible. By 1980, I had prepared about a dozen such family index records on my kinfolks. I did all this long before I ever used a computer. However, I just never got around to preparing one on our Sasser family until now. I use the Windows "Works" database to create the indexes. I spent the last four years making such index systems for of my several families (mostly for Daddy's side of my family) but until now, had not completed one for our Sasser family (Mama's). I worked all last weekend on typing info and since I had gathered a large amount of new info from Alabama, I selectively entered only info from Alabama and North Carolina from my A, B and J family history sheets books. I already have almost 3,000 names in our new Sasser Family Index now just on those families who lived in Alabama or North Carolina and whose first names begin with these three letters. I have a LOT more typing to do before I have all the info I have in our Family Library entered. It will take several weeks of steady work. But once it is done, it will help me find info for you a lot quicker and easier. I have already discovered "who" some kinfolks were. Such an indexing system works ONLY on same-name families. It does not include descendants of Sasser daughters, for instance. You have to create a different index with multiple family names. I have also created a "Husbands & Wives" Index system. Often, someone knows that "a Sasser married James Smith" but don't know what the name of the Sasser girl is. I can then look under Smith, James and find who she was. At the urging of Daddy's kinfolks who saw my Index on his family at our first national reunion, his family club decided to publish the index on his family as a book--so everyone could benefit from the information. Someday, I hope we can publish our "Sasser Family Index" as a book also. I invite everyone to use this type of indexing system if you are working on a large number of kinfolks of the same name. Your cuz, Robert Earl Woodham

    1. [SASSER-L] Allen Ann Sasser
    2. Donald K. Tillitson
    3. My ancestor, Allen Ann Sasser was born about 1828 and married James Herring, son of Simon Herring and Nancy Dawson. I do not know who the parents of Allen Ann Sasser were. I have recently found a letter written to me in 1981 that might offer clues to the identities of Allen Ann's parents. Simon Herring and Nancy Dawson had 12 children. Three of the 12 children married Sassers. Allen Herring married ___________ Sasser. James Herring married Allen Ann Sasser. John Herring married Nannie Sasser. I would appreciate any information about the Sassers listed above that might lead to information about Allen Ann Sasser's ancestry. The Herrings were from Lenoir County, NC. The Sassers were probably from the same or a neighboring county. Thank You, Don Tillitson sasser@tillotson.net http://www.tillotson.net

This will only be available for two or three days so you must look soon. While browsing through this I did find a Benjamin Sasser from Craven County, 10 entries for Brinson, 493 entries for Jones (have fun Shirley), and 27 entries for Weaver. The list goes on.... 1. Nancy's father
    2. psusers
    3. Robert Earl and all, The Thomas Kirby you refer to was almost surely a close relative of Nancy Kirby Sasser. However, oral tradition has it that Nancy's father was Jesse Kirby. Few memories are as deeply imprinted in my mind as the confident tone in which my grandmother (born in 1875) answered when I asked her in ca. 1955 what Nancy's maiden name was: "She was a Kirby," my grandmother quickly replied, and she proceeded immediately to add that Nancy's father's name was Jesse. My grandmother must have heard this from many people of her parents' and grandparents' generations (particularly from her father, Arthur Humfleet, and from his mother Piety, daughter of Henry) and also from her husband, my grandfather's, mother (Susan, daughter of Jesse). The traditions I have heard more recently from other descendants of Henry and Nancy show a remarkable consistency in backing this up. As for the information I have seen from WFT etc. going back another generation to Jesse Sr. etc., I don't know how credible it is. But I would have to see a lot of documentary proof before I discarded the seemingly solid tradition of Jesse Kirby, Glenn ***************************************** Glenn E. 1. Sasser, new info found
    2. Robert Earl Woodham
    3. "NEW" INFO FOUND For years, most of us who have been researching our early roots in North Carolina have been frustrated by the fact the records of Old Dobbs County were destroyed in a courthouse fire. Old Dobbs was formed in 1758 from part of Johnston County. In 1779, part of western Dobbs became the new Wayne County. Dobbs County existed until 1791, when the county was split into the two new counties of Greene on the north and Lenoir County on the south. The records of the former Dobbs County were transferred to the new county of Lenoir, where they were kept until a courthouse fire in 1878, which destroyed most of the records of Old Dobbs, along with those of Lenoir. Another courthouse fire took place just two years later in 1880. All of the marriage bonds and licenses, deeds, wills, estate records, court records and other public documents in the courthouse were lost. This is the area where our ancestors settled in the 1730's and still has one of the largest concentrations of our family in the nation today. The last time I was at the Lenoir County courthouse in Kinston,NC was back in 1986--so I was not aware of the fact that one important source of information WAS saved during those two courthouse fires. They managed to save the "Grantor Deed Index Book" during the first fire. This index book was then used by court officials to create a new "Grantee Deed Index Book". Then, when the courthouse burned again in 1880, they managed to save both these books. However, they became "lost" or just forgotten for the next 100 years. Then, back in the mid-1980's, some historian managed to find the Grantee Deed Index Book in a courthouse closet. A "grantor" is the one who sells property; a "grantee" is the one who is buying (or receiving it as a gift, etc.). The index is just that--all the information it has is simply who sold property and who bought or received it and the page in the deed books it was recorded on. That doesn't sound like much until you realize it is the ONLY county record we have!! For one thing, it can tell us when an ancestor was living in the area. It also named one Sasser that I was totally unaware of until now. I wrote an article about this in the online family newsletter. Check it out. ALSO: Thanks to a friend in Maryland, our Sasser Family Library now has a xerox copy of the book, "THE SASSCER FAMILY IN MARYLAND", written in 1964 by L. S. Moffett. The only other copy I had been aware of so far is one in the Library of Congress. Note the spelling. This spelling came into general use by most of the family living in Prince George's County, Maryland during the late 1800's. Prior to then, the spelling SASSER was generally used. The book quotes records going back to the 1600's. The book itself contains 57 pages, and includes several more pages for the index. I have been so excited about the book and making new family record sheets for a lot of "new" kinfolks and adding to family sheets on those I already knew about, that I haven't been able to finish reading all of it yet. This is a very valuable addition of information for our Family Library on the family in Maryland and Virginia. It shows they originally started out in Virginia and then moved into Maryland. They settled in Prince George's County, now a Washington, DC suburb, and Somerset County, on the DelMarVa peninsula across Chesapeake Bay bordering the peninsula part of Virginia. Huge numbers of early colonists arrived in the Southern Colonies at small towns and villages in this area because they were better ports than those in Carolina Colony (now both North Carolina and South Carolina). Our eternal thanks to ELLEN MAYES for sending this. She said she had tried to locate the author but she and I both believe he may be dead now. Your cuz, Robert Earl Woodham

    3. ATTENTION: all descendants of HENRY SASSER & NANCY KIRBY Dear Don, and all you cousins who are descended from HENRY SASSER & his wife NANCY KIRBY. I haven't noticed anything in what I have been given about the parents of NANCY KIRBY. Maybe you already have this and if so, forgive the repetition. I just happened to be going through deeds from Johnston County, North Carolina and noticed one dated 7 Aug., 1818. This deed was made by THOMAS KIRBY Senior and his son CHARLES KIRBY, both of Johnston County, in which they sold 250 acres of land for $370 to Stephen Grice. The deed states the land was on the north side of Poplar Branch, adjoining the farm land of HENRY SASSER. The deed was witnessed by H. SASSER and ABEL SASSER. I believe this THOMAS KIRBY Senior was the father of NANCY. Can anyone confirm this? HENRY and NANCY witnessed a deed a short time later, on 24 Nov., 1818, from Joseph Newsom of Anson Co. to James Watson of Johnston Co. Robert Earl Woodham

    3. I have finally gotten my hands on the book "Sassers of Maryland" I have sent a copy off to GA to the Sasser Society. The book is more of a booklet of about 50+ pages, but it's full of Sasser genealogy dating back to the late 1600's early 1700's. I have tried to locate the author of the booklet and have had no luck. From what I can tell this booklet was written in 1964 and I wonder if the author is even still with us. I have talked with Florence Alta Moynihan, who is mentioned in the book as the daughter of Julia Isabelle "Sasser" Mortimer and she has given her permission as a Maryland Sasser to reproduce this book for people who are interested. I would be more than happy to copy the book and mail it to anyone who is interested, just send me $10.00 this will cover the cost of copying and postage.
