    2. Robert Earl Woodham
    3. Dear Adrian, If you only KNEW how much work I have put into TRYING to "spruce up" the webpage during the last two months. My old computer went down on me the first of December and I had to spend all my savings just before Christmas to buy a new one. It has Word97 and I saw that it had a webpublishing program built in, with much more capbabilities than my old web publishing probram so I decided to try it. I have had nothing but problems so far. First, I purposely created all the files as "HTML" files with that extension. Then, I find that GeoCities' file manager cannot handle a file with more than 8 characters and when you start out as a HTML file, and you have 8 characters in the file name, that means their file manager counts "sasser.html" as 11 characters. Their file manger will change the name of your file and insert a "~" and a "1" in each of your files--then it tells you that it cannot find any such file name. Well, it took me almost two whole months to learn what was wrong. I had to spend more than a week changing all my file names from "html" to "htm" and then change all the links on every page to read "html"--because AFTER they are uploaded, the file names automatically become "html", so the links must be named that beforehand in order to work. Sound crazy?? YES! That is just PART of my problems. This darn NEW computer keeps changing my files. I have been trying to use tables so that I can have columns that make obituaries look like they would in a printed newsletter or newspaper. HOWEVER, over and over, for two months now, the computer keeps DELETING ALL of my obits. I go to the effort of typing them out, saving the page. Then when I reopen the page, all of the obits are gone. The rest of the page is OK. On other pages, the headlines and whole paragraphs CHANGE type size. I type out a page, save it, then when I reopen it, I find an entire paragraph has become size 14 or bigger and is boldened. The more I work on a page, the worse it becomes. Some pages become so corrupted, I just have to delete the entire page--over and over. I have been working about a week and a half now trying to type up a section on men who served in military units during the War, listing the names, company, regiment and rank. I discovered some time ago that you could type out something like this and than insert it with the <pre> command (for "preformatted") and the style would not be changed. But my darn computer CHANGES it EVERY time. The program is CHANGING the columns and jamming all the info together. It is CHANGING the text from Times Roman to "Courier New" and changing the size from normal 12 to 10. I NEVER use Courier text and I NEVER size 10. I have gone back and changed it manually from Courier to Times Roman several dozen times and corrected the size. No effect. I have deleted the whole page several times and started over again. No effect. I have raised cain with the manufacturer only to get an email back a week or so later saying "this is a software problem and not our problem". Microsoft says any software installed by the manufacturer is THEIR problem. After threatening to either take the darn thing back to the store and demanind my money back--or suing the manufacturer, they finally told me to completely restore my hard drive. I will lose everything on it and it will take quite a while to copy all the files I have on it. Not to mention a heck of a lot of disks to save it all on--more cost to me. I have spent literally hundreds of hours on this mess. I do have some fairly nice looking pages ready to upload. I will be switching from my present server, SwiftSite, to GeoCities because they offer four times as much space for one-fourth the cost. That will mean more work to change the URL address with all the search engines. I will try to get some of the files uploaded tonight and over the next few days. IF this darn computer would not change and delete what I do, I could already have had some nice looking stuff online two months ago. It really burns me up to watch all my work get lost on a NEW computer that I spent everything I had on. I bought it at CompUSA in Atlanta and that is a 260 round trip--or else I would have already taken it back. My old car can't be trusted again with that long a trip now. More later... Your cuz, Robert Earl

    1. [SASSER-L] Sasser Census Records
    2. Robert Earl Woodham
    3. Dear Adrian and the rest of the family, About the spellings in PRINTED census records. All too often, our family name has been mistakenly corrupted in recent published census indexes. This makes it very hard to find an ancestor in these indices. For instance, the "SAPER" spelling that you list from the 1810 North Carolina printed index is NOT how the original record actually is written. This again is a classic example of inexperienced researchers mis-reading the double "ss" as a "p". It can also be mis-read as a "f" (written "backward"). When some genealogical publishing companies began compiling state census records to print them a few years ago, they had a limited staff just were not familiar with huge numbers of family names. They couldn't take the time to check out each and every unusual name. Sadly, these books are now widely circulated and many new family researchers are unable to locate their ancestors because the spelling has entered print with a corrupted spelling. I haven't found STEPHEN Sr. in the 1850 census yet either. His son, STEPHEN Jr. was in Pike County, near his brother LEWIS and JAMES SASSER. However, neither of these three families are listed in the 1850 Mississippi Index that I have checked. In fact, WILLIAM SASSER is the ONLY Sasser listed in this particular published index. I have found the printed "SAPER" version several times but always, when I checked the original census itself, I found it is actually a double ss. I have even found where the authors of index books have misread the initial S as an L and printed the name as LASER or LAPER. On top of this problem, we also face the other problem of the name being spelled poorly in the original records by the census takers. They ofen could only barely read and write and had to do the best they could in spelling names. So when you are checking printed index books, always look for several different spellings. Your cuz, Robert Earl Woodham

    3. I have been doing some Census work on the Stephen Sasser line. I have him in Wayne Co. NC. I have him going through the indian lands through GA in 1810. I haven't been able to find him in 1840 or 1850 Census in MS. Does any one have an explanation for this? I have located land records in MS on Stephen and his sons, Lewis, James, William & Joseph in the late 1850's on the MS Land Record Cd. Also is there really a place called Sasser City? Where is it? Also, where does everyone get Joseph's father was Richard b. England? My mother had gotten her Sasser information from a book and I had some questions and thought that the family members would be the best place to start. Thanks for any tips on this family. 1. [SASSER-L] Hello
    2. Art Howe
    3. I just joined the Sasser distribution list after learning of it from Don Sasser. I'm a descendent of Henry Sasser and Nancy Kirby. My line of ancestors is 1. Henry Sasser (b. 29 Mar 1778, d. 11 Jan 1859) > 2. Arthur Sasser (b. 23 Mar 1818, d. 15 Jan. 1899) > 3. William Henry Sasser (b. 29 Mar 1850, d. 28 Jul 1907) > 4. Laura Anna Sasser (b. 10 Jan 1875, d. 19 Jan 1963) > 5. Cecil Evelyn Jones (b. 15 Mar 1901) > 6. Herbert James Howe (b. 31 Jan 1931) > 7. Arthur James Howe (b. 17 Apr 1960). FYI, my family history including everything that I've got on the Sasser line is posted at http://members.tripod.com/~arthowe/. Although I have not independently researched the Sasser line, my mother Ann Baird Howe has collected substantial information on the descendents of those Sasser family members who migrated from Kentucky to eastern Oregon in the latter half of the 19th century. It's hard to believe its 1998 and that time has rolled around again. Time for the 25th TOM & LELA SASSER FAMILY REUNION! I heard some of you did not receive the postcard I sent out in the fall. I'm truly sorry for that, some were returned (you moved and didn't tell me) and had been smudged so they might have gotten wet. Any way, here is all the scoop and then some you may have missed. We are trying for a central Texas location this year. The reunion will be held on June 12, 13, and 14 at Hidden Cove Park; The Colony, Texas. You'll find an enclosed brochure highlighting this park. We have reserved the group dining hall for Saturday and Sunday. If you want to go ahead and make reservations you will need to pay for full rate one day. If you have a Corp. of Engineers Golden Age Pass you will get your half price discount back when you check in. Also, if you reserve a shelter anyone in the group using the dining hall will get first choice of the shelters in that area on arrival. You can't plug in R.V.s of any kind at the shelters, but they have great sites with hook up near by. All sites are on first come first served basis, even with a reservation, but you will get one. I hope this makes sense. Has everyone been working on or, at least, thinking about bringing their auction items? Last reunion's auction was a big success. The personally made items were the favorites, painted T-shirts and vests, wind chimes, wooden vases, crocheted Items, needle point items, and paintings. There were other "white elephant" items that turned into sought after treasures , a tractor seat, jewelry boxes, old movies on video, and an O.U. cup. There were photo copies of some old family photos that really brought in the bids. Everyone had a great time, it was more fun, and more profitable than passing a hat. So, dust off those "special" items or get busy on those crafts and bring your auction items. Don't forget the kids, they enjoy bidding also. We are doing our best to get this all pulled together. If you have any questions please call one of us or my dad Tom Swails, the former president, and now reconnaissance agent. also, please send all address changes of your family members.
