    3. Dear Cousins, This is an apology for all those cousins I haven't answered for a few days. I started suffering several heart attacks about 2 1/2 weeks ago but kept putting it off--hoping it would "go away". It didn't. I have been divorced for many years ago and live alone. My sister finally came by to check on me and found me lying on the couch. She asked if I had called 911 or an ambulance because she recognized I was having another attack. I said simply NO--I am waiting until I finish one last cigarette. I just got out a few minutes ago. It will take a while to catch up because I have more than 400 emails waiting. Be patient with me because I MUST take it a little easy for the next few weeks. By the way, I have another memory lapse and sinze reformating my hard drive wiped out my "Sasser Family Index" I had worked on several weeks, I can't remember who the Sasser cousin was that went to western Oregon and founded a branch of the family there. Someone let me know what that was. Your cuz, Robert Earl Woodham

My mother's name was Katherine Smoot. His name is Douglas Sasser, and all I know of him is that he has a sister named Julie or Judy (but I beleive It's Julie), that he should be in his late 60's or early 70's, and that he could pass for Porter Wagner just about anywhere he went. He was also in the Korean War. He and my mother were never married, but did live in Houston and then Dallas for a short time. I would really appreciate any information you might have about him or any of his relatives. You can contact me at my home phone (918) 836-6934, either collect or otherwise. I really thank you for having the time to read my letter. Sincerely, Suzanne Chandler 7121 E. Marshall Pl. Tulsa, Ok. 74115

    3. My dad had an uncle named Marion Crocket Hounchell who served in the Spanish American War under Major General Lawton. When his first child was born, he named him Major General Lawton Hounchell. He was called Lawton. When he grew up, he joined the army, and became a career soldier, rising to the rank of Sergean Major. His full rank and name were Sergeant Major Major General Lawton Hounchell. No kidding. Honest Injin. That's the truth.

    3. Don, My father has told me that Cora Perry Sasser (whom he called "Aunt Cory") was a sister of his grandfather, Tom Perry. William R. Perry ("Uncle Bill")--the one buried at Mt. Olivet--was their brother. I am pretty sure that Nancy Jane Perry was their sister, but I might be wrong. Another sister of these Perrys that many of our ancesters were connected to--if only because she was the midwife who seems to have delivered about all the babies along the Knox/Laurel county line for decades, including both my mother and my father in 1918--was "Aunt Liz Doc" Gilbert (whose husband, I am told, was "Doc" Gilbert). SASSER were but don't look for them in Miller County, Ga. Walter was born in Early County, which adjoins Miller County. His father apparently died when Walter was young and his mother remarried to JAMES KELLY. In 1910, Walter and his sister "Kittie" (Catherine) were living with Jim in Early County. Most of the branch of the family from Early County are descendants of WILLIAM SASSER and RUSSIA (Rosa, Rucia) and their two sons. It is my GUESS (without any records to go on) that WALTER T. is a son of their son, WILLIAMDUNCAN SASSER. He was married twice, first to Mary Ann Penelope Alphadema ("Neppie") Douglas. They separated and he then married another lady whose name I don't know yet. I don't know all their children but they included a child, Pat Keaton who died at age 5 and a son MACK DANIEL, born 1883, died 1957 who had several children. I know all the children of William and Russia's other son, Daniel Wright Sr. so that leaves only William Duncan as a possibility. You need to check this out. Your cuz, Robert Earl Woodham

    3. I am looking for a connection to two Sassers: one named THOMAS W. 'Tom' and DANIEL 'Dan'. Among some old photos my grandmother, Coral H. Mattingly Farabee, left me are 3 photos of these two Sassers. They may be brothers. In the 2 pics of TOM SASSER, he seems to have been in WWII at the time & perhaps in a cavalry unit. In the one pic of DAN SASSER, he seems to have been a cook in military during WWII, stationed at Fort Sill, OK. My grandmother has written on this picture "Dan Sasser on left. My Cousin." I've been through an ocean of KY Mattinglys & never turned up any Sassers in that part of my grandmother's tree. I'm thinking that if they are cousins that it may be through her Stewarts. My grandmother's mother was Martha Jane Stewart (b: 1874, Laurel Co., KY) m: John L. Mattingly (b: 1860, Clay Co., KY). Martha Jane Stewart's parents were: Martin VanBuren Stewart (b: 1848-49, Knox Co., KY d: Bef. June 21, 1900, KY?) and Rhoda J. Hubbard (b: April 1850, Clay Co., KY d: Unknown in OK?). Their children were: 1. Cue b: Aft. 1865 d: Bef. June 21, 1900 2. Isabel b: Abt 1869 3. Sally Ann b: Abt 1870 4. Lucinda b: Abt 1872 5. Martha Jane b: July 24, 1874 6. Daniel b: Abt. Aug. 1876 (never married but had a son called Charlie) 7. Cumiah b: Abt 1877 m: William Bristo Mattingly 8. Nancy b: Abt Sept 1882 m: ? Jefferson Davis Champion? 9. Henry b: Abt Nov 1885 m: Bessie Thomas 10. William James b: Abt April 1886 11. Joseph E. b: July 26, 1880 m: Laura Mattingly I may be off base on the Sasser-Stewart connection but it's the only one that seems likely. If either of these two Sassers ring any bells with anyone, I'd like to know how they fit in. I presume they were from KY originally & may have ended up in OK after WWII.
