F.B Riley left for Washington City yesterday to be present at the inauguration of President Cleveland and hopes to procure the promise of the Marshalship of Kentucky. Old man Eb. Humflete died at his home in the Chesnut neighborhood a few miles from London, Tuesday, Feb. 28. He had been for sometime afflicted with a cancer near one of his eyes. County Clerk Scoville has issured marriage license to the following named parties during the past week; Daniel Goff and Miss Ettie Phelps; William E. Morgan and Miss Mary Z. Black; Scott McPhetridge and Miss Sallie Jones; B.F. Vanhook and Miss Harriet M. Hale; John S. Parker and Miss Sallie Southerland; B.F. Milburn and Miss Rebecca J. Moore; William N. Gilbert and Miss Malinda Sasser. Court will probably adjourn this afternoon. A large number of misdemeanor cases have been disposed of during the week. James Barnard and Jo Allen, indicted jointly for assaulting and attempting to rob Pat Casey, asked a severance of their cases for trial. Barnard's case was taken up and the jury found him guilty, giving him one year in the penitentiary. Allen's case was continued until the next term of the court. James Edwards was convicted for house breaking and goes to the penitentiary for one year. The case of Beth Fuson, indicted in Whitley county for murder was continued and a peremtory? order made for trial at the next term. The case of George Gregg for murder was continued on affidavit of the defendant. Case of John Lucas for forgery was also continued. Both juries was discharged yesterday. The Martha Washington Tea at the residence of Judge W.L. Brown Friday night, for the benefit of the Kindergarten, was a decided success. Quite a number of persons attended and the receipts were the pleasing event of the evening. Miss Stella Brown and Master Roy Brown, personating Martha and George Washington, deserve credit for the manner in which they performed the parts assigned them. All present enjoyed the evening and pronounced it a pleasant affair. The ladies who had the management of the entertainment feel thankful to their friends who attended and contributed to the success of the occasion. ______________________________ ==== HUMFLEET Mailing List ==== ***************************************** Glenn E. 3. I am searching for the ancestry of Allen Ann Sasser (reportedly also "Allie"). She married first James Herring and second Joshua Daly. I haven't been successful finding her. But I have found an "Allin Ann Sasser", daughter of Henry Sasser. I suspect there is a close relationship between the two individuals. Three of Simon Herring's children married Sassers. I was hoping that this would provide a clue as to the ancestry of Allen Ann. James Herring, Allen Herring, and John Herring all married Sassers. 3. Gail and all, I thought it would be easier to follow the instructions I gave, since I have trouble typing such a long address in without making at least one mistake. But I have tried the following, and it works as typed. This is the Sasser information, which is quite limited. Only one of Henry and Nancy's children--Patience--and her descendants to Cheryl Meecha (who, I am assuming, we should thank for the site), are included. You can go from this site to material on Kirby, Watkins, etc. Let me know if you need the web address for any of the others I have mentioned. http://www.hom.net/~egs/dbase/dbase20/axr00001.htm Glenn ***************************************** Glenn E. 1. [SASSER-L] EGS Database
    2. psusers
    3. To: the Sasser and Humfleet lists Since most of you are far more adept with the internet than I am, you probably knew about the Edenfield Genealogical Society Database long before I did. I only recently discovered it and have found some information that would be of interest to others who have not already found it. Under "Excite," type in "genealogy, Sasser," and the first site listed is the EGS Database, which traces the Sassers back to John Sasser in 1715 (as questionable as that is). You won't find much new on the Sassers, but you can go from there to a lot of interrelated Knox/Laurel County families--Kirby, Cobb, Tuttle, etc. Also--Jarvis, Helton, etc. I found some especially interesting material on my Cobb forebears. I happened to look up "genealogy, Humfleet" under "Yahoo." The first site is Don's. The fourth one down is Debbie's. The fourteenth on the list is the EGS site on Robert Gilbert, who married Piety Humfleet (daughter of Arthur Humfleet and granddaughter of Piety Sasser Humfleet, daughter of Henry Sasser). Since Piety died giving birth to her first child, Lucy (who was raised by my grandmother up to age six, when my grandmother married in 1897, and then left in the care of her grandfather), the chart in effect is limited to the descendants of Lucy (Aunt Lucy, as I knew her, although she was my first cousin once removed) and her first husband, Jesse Helton (who is incorrectly said to be her SECOND husband). But there are a lot of names of people belonging to several generations that anyone who is putting together family charts will want to make use of. As in so many such charts, I fail to see sources listed, which makes the information less useful. Glenn ***************************************** Glenn E. 2. PSasser105
    3. Debbie M: I am almost sure that the James Sasser mentioned in the 1892 Mountain Echo is my g,great grandfather James Buchanan Sasser, son of William Henry Crawford Sasser, son of Henry & Nancy (Kirby) Sasser. After his first wife died, he remarried Cynthia Williams (daughter of John (Reb) Williams & Barbara Weaver). Cynthia gave birth to Taylor Sasser (my grandfather) and died shortly thereafter. James' third marriage was to Nancy Perry. They left Laurel County and went west, living in Kansas, Oklahoma, and then finally settling in Oregon. When they left Laurel County, Taylor was left with his maternal grandparents, Reb and Barbara Williams. James returned in 1892 from Kansas to get Taylor and take him with them. Taylor did not want to go and stayed in Laurel County and was raised by Reb & Barbara Williams. I was not aware that Reb had ever lived in Arkansas, nor do I have any information on his family. If anybody out there has any info, I'd appreciate it if you would pass it on to me. Phil Sasser

    2. Don L. Sasser
    3. I have a map that shows the section, township and range of the area around Yellville AR. I assume you are asking about Andrew Jackson Sasser's land. It was" North East quarter of the North East quarter of section 23 in Township 17 north, of range 17 west" and was 40 acres. That would place it .. what is now Hwy 508 2 1/2 miles south east of Bruno AR., on the north side of the road. Bruno is about 5 miles southwest of Yellville AR. Story has it the Bruno arrived at it's name from a dog named "Bruno". Bruno is where Joseph Sasser had his store and his son, Dewey had a barber shop. The Store in now the home of Bruno Fire Department. Bruno is not what I would call a town. It has at the most 12 house's with-in 1/2 mile radius of the Fire Department. Standing in from of the Fire Department's building you can see the church, two house's and the pasture that belonged to Joseph Sasser. My grandfather T.A. Sasser's land was about 8 miles to the NE of Andrew's. Henry's was on the road to Andrew's but only 1 mile S.E. out of Bruno. James Nelson Sasser's was 2 miles to the N.E of Andrew's... 3. Don and all, I have kept looking at the message below without replying to it, probably because the quite obvious answer does not seem the likely one. But is is possible that this is the patriarch himself--that he remarried shortly before his 79th birthday and slightly less than two years before he died? If this had been the case, it seems that there should have been some other record (or tradition) of it. Soon after I joined the Sasser List I suggested the possibility that, in light of his age, Henry might have been a widower when he married Nancy Kirby. I said I didn't think so. But later I saw evidence that this indeed was true. Again, I don't think so. I infer from someone's e-mail message that there is a death certificate for Henry; presumably that would have shown that he had a surviving wife if he indeed had one, but she could have died before he did. Could the Arthur Sasser who married Fannie Hubbard in 1899 have been Henry's son who was born in 1818? He would have ben 81 years old. Since I don't have the date of death for his wife, Lavina Weaver, I have no idea whether he was a widower in 1899. That is also said to be the year of his death.. Someone probably has information that would show such suggestions to be ludicrous. I will be glad to hear it. Glenn ... ________________________________________________________________ I found in a book published by the Laurel County Historical Society that lists marriages from 1826-1937.. Henry Sasser m. Elizabeth Asher. 02-06-1857 Arthur Sasser m. Fannie Hubbard. 08-14-1899 UN-fortunately, these are two Sasser's I do not have any information on. 3. The 1860 Laurel County census lists the family of Henry & Elizabeth Sasser. He was 24 years old & born in NC. She was 23 years old & born in KY. The 1850 Laurel County census locates Elizabeth in the family of Robert and Susan (Morris) Asher, & references the fact that she later married Henry. However, there is no listing for Henry who would have been 14 years old. Mysterious! I can't add anything to the Arthur Sasser- Fannie Hubbard question. Vietta
