Ararat. He has about 40 students. Miss Lizzie Black returned from Jellico, Tenn., where she has been staying with Mrs. Dominick. Mrs. Nancy Warren and daughter have returned from Tennessee, but will not tarry long. OAKLEY La grippe is quite prevalent in this neighborhood. During the few warm days last week, our farmers began work in earnest, but their toil was of short duration. The snow and rain of Friday and Friday night stopped nearly all work. Mr. Wm. Bayless of Washington county, Tenn., visited his daughter Mrs. Granville Black, of this place last week. While in this county he visited relatives at Altamont and at Lily. Mr. Bayless is eighty-seven years old but is as nimble as a boy. He returned to his home near Jonesboro last Monday. DIED-On Sunday morning, Feb. 17, Johnny and Lewis Morris, twins aged one month. Since the death of their mother, Mrs. Mollie Morris, the children were in care of their grandmother, Mrs. J.T. Black. Mrs Black says that although they had been sick, the babies were apparently no worse a few minutes before she found that they were dead, than they had been for sometime. BORN-To the wife of Mr. John Dalton, of Altamont, a bouncing boy. John is wearing a huge smile. Mr. Wm. Binder came very near losing a good mare on last Saturday night. After doctoring her nearly all night she got somewhat better. Mrs. Sallie Black is on the sick list. LOCAL ITEMS Thomas Howard a prominent citizen of Middlesboro, was shot and killed while eating supper Tuesday evening by an unknown party. DIED-At the residence of Alexander Smith's of consumption, last Thursday night, near Green Mount Mr. Wm. Smith, formerly from Clay county. Craig Gregg, well known to many of our people and expecially well known to recent jailers of this county, and who escaped jail at Manchester a few weeks since, has been recaptured in Somerset and returned to the Manchester jail. Reports reach here that a duel to death with pistols was fought recently on Lots Creek, Perry county, between James Burton and Clarence Acord over a game of cards in which Acord was instantly killed and Burton very seriously if not mortally wounded. DIED-Of comsumption at the resident of her husband in Perry county, Mrs. Jesse Barger, aged 79 years and 5 days. She was the mother of 11 children, grandmother of 104 children, and great grandmother of 104 children. Mrs Barger leaves a husband, 84 years old, 10 children and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her death. Quite a small pox scare was experienced on the streets of London last Monday. Just before noon the news appeared on the streets to the effect that Miss Lyda Adams, of color, living almost in the center of the town, and who had returned from Lexington only a day ot two before had the small pox. There was an expression of anxiety yet a hope that the report was unfounded permeated every countenance and an investigation was at once put on foot. Dr. Coldwell at once repaired to the house of the reputed sick woman only to learn that she was suffering with a slight cold, with no symptoms whatever of the dreaded disease. When this report became generally known an expression of happiness and peace took the place of sadness upon the countenance of everybody. ______________________________

    1. [SASSER-L] Moving, Robert Earl
    2. Robert Earl Woodham
    3. Dear Cousins, I am moving tonight and Saturday (29 Aug) and will be off line for 3 or 4 weeks. I am putting everything in storage for a while and will be staying with my folks until I get another place. So please bear with me while I am "off the air". The Sasser Family Association pages will all remain on line during this time. But I just can't personally answer any questions or mail during this time. Thank goodness I have two good hefty-sized buddies who are doing all the moving for me. Still can't lift anything after that latest heart attack. I felt totally useless as I watched them carry all those armloads of notebooks out to the truck (my collection includes about 3,000 notebooks and that takes a LOT of armloads to carry out!!). A cousin on Daddy's side emailed me last night and I wrote him back immediately and provided him with a lot of info. He surprised me by dropping by this afternoon and was totally shocked to see so many records. This "stranger" cousin immediately offered to help in the moving tomorrow. FAMILY still DOES mean something to some folks, thank God. Talk to you all later... Robert Earl Woodham

    1. [SASSER-L] Smithey Sasser = Smithey Botkin???
    2. Tom Lorinczi
    3. The questions about Smithey Sasser caught my eye... I have listed a Smithey Mae Botkin (b1-1-1849 Johnston Co. NC), the daughter of Martha Patsy Sasser (b 1-30-1823 d 12-21-1896) and Joseph E. Botkin (b9-18-1816 d 6-26-1895). She married a Samuel Young. I don't know the source yet as I am in the process of sorting through records that are over 20 years old. Hope this helps. If it does, let me know and I will look more diligently for the source of my information. -elaine helton lorinczi ==================================================== Date: Wed, 5 Aug 1998 17:13:37 -0700 From: "Denise (Kirkland) Smiley" <MDSMILEY@prodigy.net> To: SASSER-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <005c01bdc0cf$0fd013e0$23989cd1@default> Subject: Re: [SASSER-L] sasser family book Hi Patsy, I am sorry to say that I was not able to find any information in the book to a Smithey Sasser. 3. WOW!!!! I am the daughter of Robert Wayne Helton of Milwaukee, WI. I recently began to go through dad's old geneaology files and am trying to get back into researching the Sasser/Humfleet/Helton/Sprinkle line. In going through the roots search, I never expected to see dad's name after 19 years. I have his records and think others might be interested in the things he compiled. but, I have no idea how to go about submitting them on this roots search. I am rather new to this stuff so any help would be appreciated. -elaine helton lorinczi ORIGINAL MESSAGE: Date: Sat, 20 Jun 1998 21:39:36 -0500 From: "psusers" <psperrg@scifac.indstate.edu> To: SASSER-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <38D57BC626F@scifac.indstate.edu> Subject: [SASSER-L] Sarah Grindstaff's letter Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Debbie, You recently asked whether anyone has a copy of Sarah Grindstaff's letter to Piety Humfleet--widow ofWilliam Humfleet and daughter of Henry Sasser and Nancy Kirby Sasser--in 1888. This is the way it was printed in Knox County, Kentucky Kinfolk 2 (no. 1): January 1, 1978, pp. 6-7 (reprinted for the Knox County Genealogical Society under the Reprint Program of Cook-McDowell Publications, Inc., 719 E. 6th Street, Ownesboro, KY 42301). Glenn [p. 6] A LETTER FROM THE PAST Contributed by Mr. Robert W. Helton, 5739 North 98th Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 53225 The following letter was also [in addition to another item published in the previous pages of the same issue]found in a trunk belonging to my great-grandfather, Arthur Humfleet. The letter was transcribed by his grand-daughter, Eva Humfleet McHargue and was typed by Robert W. Helton on December 10, 1977. (Note: The letter was addressed on the outside to, "Mrs. Pi ety HumfleetTuttle, Ky.") Apr. 23, 1888 Spickardsville Mo. Grundy Co. Dear Sister & Family I thought I would write you a few lines. I am still on the land amongst the living, but I don't feel that my time is very long here. I am growing old and feeble but when the Lord calls I am ready to go. I am the last of the family and I have been left here a long time to suffer and toil. But that hope I have of the rest after death sustains me through this toilsome life. I am crippled with the rheumatism so I can't hardly get around. Paris has three children two boys and a girl. The oldest is six years old. They are named Jimmy, Willie, and Betty. Paris es (sic) wife isn't very well now. Paris is plowing for corn he is going to put in about thirty acres of corn. We are doing very well. This is a good country. Wages run from 18 to 20 dollars per month. I want you to write and tell me something about brother Johns wife. Where is she and where is Berty Williams and sister Mary's girl. What became of her. And give my love to all the friends. I want some of you to write me as soon as you can. I don't know how long I will be here to receive and write letters. I would like very much to hear from you often. I feel that I am nearly alone in the world. Paris and his family are all I have [beginning of p. 7] here and sometimes I feel very lonely. And a letter from my old home would cheer me up. I will close hoping to hear from you soon. Ever remember your affectionate sister and friend. Sarah Grindstaff Special Note: Robert W. Helton adds the following regarding the above letter: "William and Piety Humfleet are found in the 1850 Knox County Census. Living with them was a Sarah Humfleet, age 40, born N.C., who is either a sister or widowed sister-in law of William in my opinion. The writer of the letter, Sarah Grindstaff, may be this Sarah. Where the word sister is used in reference to Piety in the letter, I am absolutely positive she is not a blood sister." ***************************************** Glenn E.
