    3. Hi Sherri: I am Elaine Lorinczi, descendant of James Madison Sasser. I saw your inquiry regarding the pictures and was wondering which line you are from. Perhaps we can share some information. With regard to the pictures, Don Sasser has copies of them and he can be contacted at dlsasser@email.msn.com although I am sure he will contact you after reading your original message. Hope to hear from you. -Elaine Sherri Henry wrote: > > I am very interested in your pictures. I have been shut down because of a > glitch in Windows 98. I am from that line of Sassers. 3. To Mike, Glenn, et al., The day before we met Glenn and Mike Perry and the others cousins in June of this year we made the trip to Sasser, KY. Although it was on the map given us by Glenn some months earlier we had some difficulty locating Sasser. We stopped and ask a farmer on a tractor who had stopped to open a gate to his field just where this Sasser was. He didn't have a clue but looked over Glenn's map. He said we would drive through it just ahead. He said it will look much like the area we were in, just fields and farmhouses. We drove up the road about one half mile and saw the road "T" off to the cemetery just up a hill and we realized the farmer was right. We were driving through Sasser, KY and it is just farmland and farmhouses. Earl Sasser At 08:50 AM 9/2/1998 -0500, you wrote: > >Mike, > > I have a map of the eastern part of Laurel County. 3. Mike, > Does anyone have any information on where Sasser Ky. might have been? Was it > just a Post Office? It is my understanding that Sasser, Ky was a general store with a post office in it which was owned by my grandfather, Taylor Sasser (son of James Buchannan Sasser, son of William Henry Crawford Sasser, son of Henry Sasser). Grandfather died of pneumonia in January of 1949. My grandmother (Rose Brock Sasser) lived on the farm there til the late 60s, when she moved to London. I can remember being in the store when I was about 5 or 6 (I am 49 now). It burned down shortly after that. The store was only about a mile north, or northeast off of the Blackwater Rd. When I was growing up, the road was called Punchen Camp Rd.(there is a creek by that name which runs close). I think it is called Sasser Rd. now, but I am not sure. A couple of years ago I was back there with my father and we walked over the ground of "the old home place" (my father's words). Only about a mile or so up the road is the very nice grave site of Abraham Sasser. Since there are more than one by that name, I'm not sure that's your grandfather. I am at work, and so don't have all my Sasser stuff with me, but I think that Abraham was married to Lucy (Chadwell?). Well, If you need more information let me know and I'll try to help. My dicription of the location may not be completely accurate, but I could drive you right there. Sincerely yours, Phil Sasser Cary, NC

    3. Mike, I have a map of the eastern part of Laurel County. As we all know, Blackwater Creek (also the name of a church and formerly of a post office and school)--at the extreme southeastern tip of the county, next to Knox County and Clay County--was (is?) the center of Sasser life (i.e., of Henry Sasser's descendants). That is where Henry Sasser and Nannie his wife settled in 1826. I am less familiar with the place called Sasser, but the map shows it as lying just north of Blackwater. It seems to be across the hill from Blackwater on the waters of Willie Creek (which roughly parallels Blackwater Creek as a tributary of the Laurel River) or maybe Bennets Branch. Sasser is adjacent to Clay County. If you will give me your address, I will be glad to send you a copy of this map. This applies to any member of Sasser-L. What was stated about Abe's mother being postmistress fits what I know about the names of other post offices around there. That is, they tended to be named for the first postmaster/postmistress. And although the post office probably does not exist any more (the address presumably being London instead, which should not be taken to mean that this is IN or PART OF London), such a name of the locality often has remained. By the way, there is a web site on Kentucky place names that includes a lot of such localities. RootsWeb accepts only plain text mail. That means that HTML mail, attachments, ``enriched text'', and a few other formats can't be sent to RootsWeb mailing lists. You can post your message if you send it in plain text; turn off the ``Post in HTML'' or ``Enriched Text'' features of your mail reader, or don't use any attachments. See http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm for instructions on turning off HTML in most of the popular mail programs, or ask your ISP's technical support line for help. We've had to institute this policy because of the problems that accompany these fancy mail formats. Some people don't have mail programs that are capable of processing the special file formats. Even among those who do, different mail programs handle these special formats in very different and confusing ways. HTML messages pose special problems to our digested mailing lists. Most of all, HTML-ified mail and attachments place a considerable burden on RootsWeb's overworked machines. All in all, mail in this format produces a lot of problems for RootsWeb's servers and subscribers, so we find it's best just to use plain text. -- The RootsWeb staff

    2. The following is taken from the book "The History of Wallowa County Oregon" Does anyone have any information on where Sasser Ky. might have been? Was it just a Post Office? This is about my greatgrandfather, Abraham Sasser. His mother was Pharby Jones Sasser Thanks, Mike Sasser "The decision to leave Sasser, Laurel County. Kentucky, was more than a little frightening. True they would be making the long journey with other families of relatives and friends. True, they would join more relatives and friends already established in Wallowa County and the strangeness and anxiety would be eased. But, true, also, the family of Abe Sasser was leaving a familiar environment of acceptable security among relatives, neighbors and friends of long standing. Sasser, Kentucky, a small village 10 1 2 miles from London, Kentucky had long been home to the Sassers, Hammacks, and numerous related families for generations. Here, too, Abe's mother was postmistress."

    3. Debbie, You probably already know this, but I thought I would mention that the place known as Tuttle in the various excerpts you have posted is the same as Mt. Olivet. I have always heard that our great grandfather, Arthur Humfleet, was the Tuttle, Ky. postmaster for many years. The Humfleet place and the Mt. Olivet Church and cemetery are just barely inside Knox County, but I assume that the area of the Tuttle postal address straddled the county line. I find it interesting that it is the name of the church (and, I suppose, the old one-room school) that we generally know the area by---not by the name of the post office. Echo 1895 (33) ============================================== Reprinted with permission of the Laurel County Historical Society ============================================== July 12, 1895 TUTTLE Mr. and Mrs. David Martin of Jellico, were visiting the family of W. Harvey Humfleet Wednesday and attended the celebration the 4th. W. F. Sasser like Job of old is afflicted with boils. ALTAMONT Harry Withers, while at church at East Bernstadt, Saturday evening was attacked by Jim Bullock, receiving a knife wound, cutting an artery of the neck and splitting his ear. Mr. Sam Cox has gone West to seek his fortune. Mr. I. F. Green put out some strychnine for crows, but to his surprise he killed five very fine white ducks instead of crows, and when the report reached the owner there was almost a fight, as the ducks were favorites of his wife. TOPTON Some one borrowed a few bags of flour from D. C. Edwards commissary a few nights ago, without his leave, too. MAPLESVILLE Miss Eliza Harrison after a protracted illness of six months, died last Wednesday evening. Her remains were laid to rest Thursday in the family graveyard. Miss Mary Moore, while out riding last Tuesday evening, was thrown from her horse and received slight injuries but not serious. VOX MARRIED-At the residence of the bride's father in the presence of a number of relatives and other friends July 3d, Mr. W. P. Brewer of Fariston, to Miss Manilia Parker, of this place. Rev. C. G. Brewer officiating. May they have a long and prosperous journey through life. LOCAL ITEMS Mr. O. H. Griffin and family are occupying their new residence in the Johnson addition. It is small but a "mighty sight of company" is the report from Dr. Pennington's. It is a girl and registered its arrival last Friday. Mr. Wm. G. Greybeal, who has been out West for several years, that is several times in the last few years, returned to old Laurel a few days ago. Mr. C. X. Bowling who has been attending school at Valparaiso, Ind. during the last year, has returned and will make London his future home. Married-At the court house last Friday, Mr. Wm. MAPLESVILLE Born- To the wife of Jasper Cottingim a boy. Miss Lizzie Harrison is very low at this writting. The residence of Mr. Thomas Doughty was burned last Thursday. He suffers a heavy loss, there being no insurence. OAKLEY Mr. H. C. Pennington and your correspondent visited Mr. Moses Mullins Sunday evening and while there they visited his June apple trees. Fields and Adkins, now in the Barbourville jail under a life sentence for the murder of Judge Combs, say that "Bad Tom Smith" died with a lie on his lips when he said that he heard them, B. F. French and Boon Frazier plotting the death of Combs. LOCAL ITEMS Mr. Fred Pigg had the misfortune last Saturday while out fishing on Cumberland river to have his horse fall over a cliff and kill himself while grazing. Uncle John Arthur, an aged and highly respected colored man living five miles South of London, died last Sunday morning, after a long illness of typhoid. Mrs. W. L. Brown gave the young folks of London a very pleasant social last Thursday evening. A bold and desperate attempt was made last Wednesday evening just after dark by the eight prisoners now confined in our jail, to effect their escape, and had not their plot been discovered just at the moment it was they would have succeeded admirably. They had secured a two inch scantling about four feet long, with which they battered a hole in the sheet iron and broke the saw proof iron bars off their cage, making an opening through which two of them, Lewis Rector, the notorious horse thief, and a negro, had crawled and had about effected an opening through the brick wall sufficiently large to crawl through, when they were discovered. Judge Brown made an order yesterday transferring Rector to the Stanford jail for safe keeping. TUTTLE Mrs. Nancy Baker is very sick. Born-To the wife of W. F. Sasser a fine girl. WANT TO BUY A FARM The undersigned committee, appointed by the Laurel County Fiscal Court, wants to buy a farm of from 50 to 100 acres, located within four miles of London, on which to locate a Poor House. Propositions will be received until the second Monday in July. Address all propositions to Judge W. L. Brown, London, Ky. W. L. BROWN] T. JONES ] ED SCHALCH ] ______________________________
