Special to Joe Sissom-- Thanks for the warm and friendly welcome to the clan! Joe Sissom wrote: > Special to David Beasley -- David Beasley wrote you (or the list) nothing. If you had read the message you would have found the following: The message was signed: Alma L. Beasley Placentia, CA (The signature was followed by this note which clearly indicates who wrote the message.) (NOTE: I am having trouble with my computer and I have my son's while he works on mine; hence the reason for two addresses. When mine is finished, I will advise of a change of email address.) > David, it appears you may have succombed to the disease that has > infected many of us who have gone before in over reliance on 'the easy > way.' I have never been known for taking the easy way out. In the third paragraph of the message you will find a message intended for Tammy with the following comment about the sources and support for the info. I don't know who submitted this info nor the sources/support they had for it, but I will try to find out.) > The internet and Broderbund has developed for more genealogical > 'copyists' than researchers. Following the eight generations listed (for info only--NOT cast in concrete) were the following comments as to my intentions for verifications, as well as sources for most of the info listed in the eight generations. This seems like a lot of info, BUT there is still much of this to be verified. There are a number of sources for the info listed. Some of it was found in an old family Bible that dates back to the late 1700's; some from letters, notes and the such found this summer in an old trunk belonging to Mintie SMITH BEASLEY. (Among the things found in the trunk were a number of pictures--old golden tone ones on cardboard, which only one marked as to who it is-- W. H. SMITH and Family, dated 1888. There were also a number of tin type pictures which were unidentified. Maybe sometime connections can be made.) I have made contact by telephone and in person while in the South recently with Sapp researchers who have freely shared info and last, but certainly not least, on the computer at the Mormon Family History Center last Saturday. I will continue to search films, books and other records, but any input any of you might have will be greatly appreciated. In addition, I spent a couple of hours or more on the telephone yesterday, prior to sending the message, with a gentleman who has published a book on the Sapp Family and has been quite involved with a historical society in Tennessee where my line of Sapps eventually settled. I didn't mention this as one of my sources because I am waiting to receive copies of documents, etc. that he is sending. > A few months ago I manned an exhibit across the aisle from Broderbund, > having to listen to the nonsense, and sometimes outright distortions > they were putting out. About a month ago, the director of the genealogy > dept at Dallas Public Library wrote a column in the 'Dallas Morning > News' saying all the above. I don't doubt this at all. I have heard some real horror stories about Broderbund; however, I do like using the software package they publish for tracking my family history.By the way, I might add this comment to you, I said that I was "A NEW SAPP RESEARCHER", I did not say that I was a new researcher. > Be patient, please, cousin. This is frequently a frustrating, but > fascinating hobby. I also agree with this. I have run into many brick walls in my research and have also run into errors in info that has been given me by others (some were well-meaning relatives). Any info received by me from anyone is researched before accepting it as gospel; however, I see nothing wrong with using info provided by others as clues for what might be how things were. > Tomake my point: Please document in any way that Henry SAPP of Kent MD > is the father of Ben of 1730. But I also suspect > a couple of other guys named SAPP might be and I don't ahve a clue, and > some people who are conservatively 10 times better at this than I am, > have been unable to nail it down. I believe someone has sent info regarding this subject to the list tonight. I will be interested to see if you attack them in the same manner you did me. I WOULD LIKE TO THINK YOUR MESSAGE WAS INTENDED TO BE CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM AND THAT YOU HAD NOT READ THOROUGHLY THE MESSAGE I SENT OR ELSE YOU WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN SO OFFENDED BY IT. > Off the soapbox.... welcome to the clan. > > Joe > -- > For my family database go to http://www.123net.net/~jsissom Hopefully, we can be of help to each other after this incident. The message I sent was the first one sent subsequent to my initial subscription to the list. I am a member of several Rootsweb lists and this is first time I have received such a message. Maybe you can explain??? I would certainly like to hear what you have to say. I apologize to you for whatever I said, or you thought I said that offended you. Alma L. Beasley Placentia, CA P.S. My apologies to the rest of the group. Quite frankly, I am dumbfounded by this whole incident. -- David Beasley - Computer Programmer/PC Technical Support Dave's Web Designs http://home.earthlink.net/~dabathome mailto:dabathome@earthlink.net
