All's well now -- we're operating normally and should have the backlog cleared up by tonight. Here's what happened: I finished the hardware upgrade as planned at 4am this morning, but the server wouldn't run reliably. The problem was intermittent, and basically what that sort of thing does is force you to try replacing one component at a time until the server starts running smoothly. At about 11am, I'd narrowed the problem down to a specific cable in the server, which apparently has a broken conductor or a loose connection. Anyway, that cable is history now and the server is running fine.
