I apologize for possibly wasting others' time. New at this, have apparently not yet used proper syntax for archive search. Also cannot connect to server when attempting alternate rootsweb search vehicles. To the point... Looking for information on ancestors, additional data on, Ephraim Sanford and Mary St. John. According to my mother, he was a colonel in Kansas National Guard after the civil war. He and wife (Mary St. John) apparently moved from Genesee region of New York state to Kansas, possibly to tilt state anti-slave. Don't know where in Kansas. Talk of family knowing John Brown. Ephraim and Mary had (at least) two children, Mary Emily and another daughter, probably named Louise. Louise married, went to California, where she and husband ran a vineyard, communicated with sister Mary Emily, but they never saw each other again. (In late 1920s, my mom remembers a barrel of grapes sent to Mary Emily from Louise.) Mary Emily was my great-grandmother. She was born in Kansas in late 1860s, her parents were born in New York state. Mary Emily married James MacLatchie Nicol. Their son, Warren Sanford Nicol, was born in Carbondale, Pa. on Sept. 23, 1895. Also, Ephraim had an ancestor who escaped from the Wyoming massacre in late 1700s (Wilkes Barre area, Pa.). This ancestor was part of group of Connecticut settlers who came to Pa., both Connecticut and Pa. apparently disputing ownership of the area post-Revolution. Of those fleeing, some went back to Connecticut, some ended up in Towanda, Pa (Bradford county?). Don't know which group Ephraim's ancestor was a part of. That's all I know at this point. Lacking more info from my mom, list members should be spared my impenetrable prose. Thanks for your patience. Bruce Rockwell ([email protected])
