It has been quite a while since I've seen discussion about the possible connections between the Westmoreland co. VA Sanfords and the Lunenburg co. VA Sanfords. I've recently been looking over the last string, and I have some questions and comments. (1) Regarding the Robert Sanford who married Mary Muse: What is anyone's current thinking about whether Mary was the mother of all his children? (His will makes reference to wife Mary, sons Augustine and Robert, and son Joshua "and his mother Mary Sanford," possibly implying that she was not the mother of the other sons.) (2) Regarding the Robert Sandford "Junior" who married Frances Longworth: Is there any possibility that this Robert could have been the one who also married Mary Muse? Dates are problematic, because the marriage to Mary Muse seems to have taken place no later than 1726, and in 1732 a Robert Sanford petitioned Westmoreland Court for the portion of the estate of John Longworth due daughter Frances, with whom Sanford had intermarried. On the surface it would sound as if Robert and Frances were married at that time; but is it possible Frances was deceased, and Robert was actually suing for the portion of the estate which should go the Frances' heirs (i.e., their children)? Otherwise, why was it necessary to sue for this inheritence? (I do not have a copy of the court papers themselves, and it may be that they make it clear that Frances was alive at that time; but if there is some ambiguity in them, is this a possible reading?) (3) It has been speculated that the Robert who shows up in Lunenburg co. is the Robert who was the son of Robert who married Mary Muse. Do we have any evidence, pro or con, as to whether Mary Muse was the mother of all of this Robert's children? (4) Has anyone discovered any evidence of the maiden name of Frances, the wife of John Sanford of Lunenburg co. who died ca. 1762? (5) Has anyone ever seen a marriage record for the John Sanford, son of the above John, who allegedly married Nancy D. Roberts, perhaps ca. 1790? One would expect the marriage to have taken place in Lunenburg co., but it apparently isn't recorded there. How about neighboring counties in VA or NC, especially Granville co. NC where there is some suggestion that this John Sanford may have lived? Richard O. Johnson P.O. Box 235 Grass Valley, CA 95945 [email protected]
