Before me is a copy of "The Compendium of American Genealogy, Vol. VII" published in 1942 by The Institute of American Genealogy. The entry in the Immigrant Ancestors section for Thomas is as follows: "SANFORD, Thomas (1607/08-1681), from England in the "Arbella," with Gov. John Winthrop 1630; settled at Milford, Conn., 1637; m. 1636/37, Sarah -- (d. 1681)." This does not entirely agree with the account in Carlton's book, and no sources are offered for it. Carlton states on page 67: "It is tradition among many Sanfords over the country that Thomas Sanford came over to this country as a member of the John Winthrop Colony in the year 1630. I find no proof of this. It is, in fact, quite safe to say that he did not come with him." Does anyone care to comment? Is there a complete passenger list?
