Joanne Rabun started it all when she set up her family history site called The Gene Pool. She included a page called The Ball Room with information about Edward Ball- affectionately referred to as "Big Ed" where people could leave messages. Very analogous to the Sanford site. After some discussion it was agreed to share gedcoms- one person offered to collect and compile- later another did the same. Eventually the data became the gedcom shown at: http://www.altlaw.com/edball/biged1.htm Throughout this process there was ongoind discussion about copyright issues, publication worries, site security etc. Occassionally some people got annoyed with others, but everyone hung in there. Thanks to a generous donation of server space the data has been available to all for about two years or so. Having genealogists who are first class researchers really helped, and so did the exoert computer skills of Lawrence Hiler. The Sanfords have the benefits of genealogical expertise and, I suspect, computer skills- if the logistical and personal issues can be handled, some sort of collaborative effort would be extremely beneficial.
