Although I don't have information on your couple, I do have Sanford families in McDonough Co., IL - and a Joel L. Sanford, born ca 1800 in NY. Joel had a son named Heman Lowell (HEMAN is correct spelling). There may be some connection here. Do you know any more about your Herman Sanford?
