Thanks to those who responded to my entry regarding marriages between Martin and Sanford families. I have two such families I am trying to trace. The first family is that of my great grandparents.....John Jackson Martin, born in Georgia in l820... married Mary Ann Sanford, bl826 in GA or AL. We believe this marriage took place in Georgia about l842 as their oldest known son, John Sanford Martin states he was born in Atlanta, GA in l844. The family was in Alabama by about l846 in and around Jefferson Co where John Sanford Martin joined the Alabama Confederate Army in l862.....Company "G", 30th Regiment....formed in Jefferson Co. John Jackson Martin's service in the Civil War in unknown, however it is believed that he was killed by Union Troops on his farm in the early l860s. The farm by old family records was located at the Headwaters of the Black Warrior River. By l870 the widow, Mary Sanford Martin and 8 known children arrived in Freestone Co Texas where they settled on a homestead next door to property owned by Elkanah Sanford, Thomas Uriah Sanford, Simon Z. Sanford and Thomas Jefferson Sanford. The eldest of this Sanford family believed to be Elkanah Sanford, born l808 in SC. He went to the area of Tuscaloosa Co Ala in the early l800s and then to Shelby Co Texas about l850. The other Sanfords believed to be brothers or cousins. These Sanford did not stay long in Freestone Co but returned to Shelby Co Texas in l870s. It is believed that Mary Sanford Martin has some relationship to these Sanfords but no proof has surfaced to date. In and l860s another Martin-Sanford family arrived in Freestone and neighboring Leon County. This was the family of Thomas B. Martin, born l833 in MO....and wife, Sarah M. Sanford, born in Pike Co Alabama in l838. Thomas Martin's grandfather, also a Thomas was born l785 in Dublin, Ireland...died in Apeliken, Alabama in l870. The only information on Sarah M. Sanford is that her father was Henry Sanford and mother "Sarah." The surname of both families were spelled SAMFORD and SANFORD. Any connection between the two Martin-Sanford families of Freestone Co is unknown at this time. Anyone with information regarding any of these families please contact me. Glad to exchange information. John Kulbeth, Merced, Calif.
Does anyone have marriages between any Sanfords and Martins? Interested in marriages in mid l800s in Alabama or Georgia. JAK

Jerry; Do you have anything on Barak Sanford? I have never been able to find anything but a brief mention of the name in some record or something several years ago. I think I have seen something just recently on Jesse Sanford though but can't remember what. I also wrote Kathleen about Barak Sanford. This just has to be William "Bill" Sanford's and Merry "Polly" Chamber's son and name after her brother Barak. I also wanted to tell you that I received a listing by e-mail from another Sanford researcher which would take us back at least another generation to Thomas P. Sandford's parents. However there are some various serious issues of mixing multiple Sanford families as one. I went over this a few years ago with some researcher that had this on Thomas P's children's level showing Hezekiah and another Sandford from SC as brothers and their father as someone else. I think that I got him set straight at that time but he said he had paid a professional genealogist for the work a few years previous. I hope I can get something straight on it. It would be real nice to get back one more generation! Hi Kathleen; I have San(d)fords that were in SC before 1790. They moved from Rowan Co, NC with 2 sons c1887. Thomas P. Sandford, b. c1750 VA, d. c1809 SC, m. Mary Rutledge Bef 1780 NC. This family lived in Greenville District raising sons William "Bill" and Hezekiah P. and also daughters Agnes and Julia. The sons were b. in the early 1880s in NC and the daughters after they moved to SC. All 4 married children of Philip Chambers who was in Rowan Co, NC but moved to Union Co, SC in the early 1780s and then to Greenville District after the 1790 census but before the 1800 Census. William "Bill" Sandford married Mary Polly Chambers after the 1800 census. His sisters also married during this time frame, Agnes to Barak Chambers and Julia to John Chambers and all three couples moved to Pendleton District, SC and the area would later become Pickins County and later Oconee Co. The other son, Hezikiah P. Sandford, m. Priscilla Chambers but they remained in Greenville District, SC. Hezikiah disappearing c1821. Mary Rutledge apparently died after the 1830 Census and Priscilla and her two sons and the family of one of them moved to Cherokee Co, AL c1833. I have never been able to find much on William "Bill" Sandford...other than a mention in some record of that area and time frame where a Barak Sandford existed and later a record of two daughters being born and named Zerilda and the other a name also beginning with a 'Z'. I later found a Will recorded for William dated in 1848. His wife, Mary, was listed as customary of the time and two grandsons named Dickson mentioned as heirs. Later, on the 1860 SC Census I found the Widow Mary "Polly" Sandford living in the household of a family named Dickson which was her daughter Zerelda's home. I have never discovered anything else on this William Sandford family but I thought of it as a possibility for your missing Sandford Family. The best of luck to you!
