Surnames: Sanford Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/4FFBAIB/948.2 Message Board Post: Dear Joyce, It's a year since you posted but I just read your post. I am the g-g-g-grand-daughter of Walker J. Sanford through his son William Dawson Sanford. I intend to do more research on this family and would very much like to compare notes with you. If you read this please reply so that we may visit some. I hope to write a novel based on the lives of some of these Sanfords in WV who were kin to my Grandmother, Lilly Clark. I do know that Wm Dawson Sanford and 5 of his brothers were Methodist Episcopal Circuit Riders. The more stories and tales I can gather from this family the more interesting the novel will be. I currently live in the Pittsburgh area and want to visit WV to do some interviews and research. --Jean Clark Caudill Calicemsalutaris@aol.com

    1. Re: [SANFORD] Sanford, Martin families of Georgia & Alabama
    2. I don't have any info re: Sanford Martin families in the South as you indicate. There is another "Sanford/ Martin tie in in Marion County OH where there were lots of Sanfords and martins. Amasa Bernard Sanford md Polly Martin about 1820 and they had several children (about 10 as I remember). Polly Martin was from the Martin line that was from Piscataway NJ. I know nothing more about Amasa Sanford other than the fact that he married twice more after wives died and eventually died in Michigan City, Indiana. Piscataway was getting too crowded apparently and Jacob Martin (Polly's grandfather) led a group of 7th Day Baptists to settle in Ohio. Polly and Amasa were md in Jefferson County, OH and migrated to Marion Co., shortly thereafter. Some researchers believe Amasa was in theSouth before he moved to Indiana but have never seen any documentation of this. Marion Keefer, Oregon

    3. Research all "SANFORD" in the 1880 AL Census for Cherokee and adjacent counties. There is a very good chance you will find 'Martha' in the home of her parents. If you have no luck with the 1880 census, try the 1870.
