    2. Does anyone have info on a Knapp marriage for a Sanford woman? My 3rd great grandfather, Chandler Knapp's parents were said to be Thomas Knapp and a Miss Sanford. He was "of VT' and she "of NY." The marriage was about 1806. Can anyone help on this long standing brick wall? Sharon

    1. [SANFORD] Ruffus Sanford Shelby County Texas
    2. Chelle & BR Byerly
    3. I am looking for Ruffus Sanford. I know that he had children and married in the 1870's in Shelby but I also 'just know' he has to be there before then. I am looking for him or a parent, sibling etc. He used the Harvey name on at least 2 of his kids ( their middle name is Harvey) and one son is Absolum. I would love to hear from anyone researching in Shelby even if you dont think you are part of Ruffus line cause if you can identify one of the families in the 1850-1860 census' that will help :) I cant identify them and its all that much harder becuase they used initials! Ruffus did marry Joanna Jane Eaves in 1871 and they had a passel of kids. I am confused as to where Ruffus started out adn why he is so hard to find. ????? Michelle Coan Byerly Jasper, Texas

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Sanford Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4FFBAIB/1058 Message Board Post: My husband's 2nd great grandfather is Greenberry Sanford. Greenberry first appears on the 1850 Shelby Co TX census in the household of Thomas Sanford, age 35. It's a household that does not seem to be one family. The female head of household is Mary age 70. The next 4 people could be a nuclear family (John, 25; Mary,21; Hiram, 5: and Ben F, 6mos) and lastly is Green B, age 6, born in MS. My best guess is that Mary, age 70 is a grandmother to little Greenberry. Thomas and John are probably her sons. But is Thomas or John the father of Greenberry? Probably not, given the order of enumeration. They are more likely uncles to Greenberry. Who is the husband of Mary? There is an Elizabeth Sanford, born in AL, who died in Shelby Co in May 1850 at age 41 of unknown cause. My guess is that she is little Greenberry's mother. But who is and where is his father? I can't find any of this household in 1860. In 1870, Greenberry Sanford and wife Mary are enumerated in Shelby Co, Brooklin PO, with eldest son William J(Jackson). Mary, age 26 was born in LA, but the child was born in Texas, so I'm guessing they married in Shelby Co ca 1866. By 1880, this family is in Sabine Par LA (not far from Shelby Co, TX). They now have 3 children, William J, Samuel (my husband's great grandpa) and Greenberry, age 3- all kids born in TX so they probably stayed in Shelby Co till at least 1877. By 1900, Greenberry has moved all his family to Cherokee Co TX. Mary apparently died in the early 1880's because Greenberry married Elizabeth "Betty" Chambers and they had 8 children. There are a number of related Sanford/Samford familes who came to Shelby Co TX bef 1850: Elkanah, Samuel, Absolam, William, Uriah, Simon and Greenberry. How does my Greenberry fit? Was he orphaned?

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4FFBAIB/1055.1 Message Board Post: The dates I removed were estimates that someone inserted into publicly posted trees that were not supported by Carlton Sanford's work, the census, the SSDI or other reliable information. Earlier versions of my tree were influenced by the public trees. See my comments on fictitious dates in previous posts. I have not removed any dates provided by Carlton; on the whole his work seems to have been quite reliable. In a few cases the census supports slightly different dates, which I used if they were consistent, and especially if they suggested an earlier birth year. People rarely say they are older than they actually are, although there are a few exceptions. Some of the unsupported dates remain, I'm sure. Feel free to point them out.

I used information from the 1911 genealogy by Carlton E. Sanford, and added to that information from the census and other public data sources. I also removed dates that appeared to have no basis, although some probably remain. I'd appreciate any additions or corrections to this data. The sources are the genealogy by CES unless otherwise sated in the notes. 3. There were SANFORD & SANDFORD families in Greenville District & Pendleton District beginning as early as 1790. Those in Pendleton were later in Pickins as Pendleton was disestablished. Some may have moved from Pickens to GA with CHAMBERS, COBB, DICKSON & PITTS families. I have not came across a George Sanford that I can recall though.
