    1. Sanford Mystery #8
    2. GOLFOGEY
    3. Hello to all-- Sandie is correct in that I show John WARNER, b 1568; md Mary PURCHASE in 1578 -- and his will is dated 1585. I put the info in my computer notes that means he was only 10 years of age when he md Mary -- It didn't seem correct when I put it into my computer, but I entered it that way anyway. My source is two other Sanford researchers, but I don't know their source. Initially, I had John WARNER b 1555, but I don't have the source for that either. I'm certainly willing to change to whatever dates if somebody has the source. Perhaps I should just delete his birth date. What do you think? Regards, Sandy Sanford (male) in San Diego Co., CA

    3. Hello to all-- Dave Dickman says that Richard Sanford died 16 Nov 1691 -- I believe it should be 1591. I'm not here to criticize please. However, between mid-1995 and mid-1996, I wrote 50--60 snail mail and E-mail letters trying to find the source that said that Richard (the above-mentioned person), b 1533, was the son of Richard, b 1490, because that's what is in the LDS Ancestral File. NO ONE has that source -- it is only wishful thinking!!! Take care, Sandy Sanford (male) in San Diego Co., CA

I had never before seen any information on Robert's parentage, and Dave, Carlton Sanford had research done by Charles A. Hoppin (completed in Jan, 1910) on his ancestor Thomas Sanford, b. 1607/8 in Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex, England. The resulting 39 page article, "Medieval Origin of the Sanfords," serves as the cornerstone of his two volume work, "Thomas Sanford, The Emigrant to New England, etc." Among the things that are documented is the fact that Thomas, Andrew and Robert (at least) were brothers, and that the farthest one can follow their ancestors is to their Great Grandfather, Richard Sanford, d. 16 Nov 1591, Stanstead Mountfitchet, Essex, England. It sounds as though you have been exposed to a more elaborate lineage -- that is a myth. It had already been circulated when the research noted above was conducted, and is convincingly dismissed. The basic information from Carlton's work may be found at the site below. A more complete treatment will (eventually) be completed at my new site: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~softbear/>. There are some issues with my 'old' site that I hope to have cleaned up before it is posted to the new one, but the cleanup and source entries are tedious: I'm sure I will have a whole new crop of errors to tackle by the time I get through it once. 1. GEORGE CLAYTON SANFORD
    2. Jbm748
    3. Hello To Everyone, I posted this query a while back but thought I would give it another try. My ancestral line of SANFORDS goes back to RICHARD SANFORD, born in Stanstead, Essex, England in1533 and died in 1591. My grandfather was HENRY RUSSELL SANFORD, son of CHARLES BOUTON SANFORD and Nellie Cecelia FITCH SANFORD. Charles and Nellie had 9 children, all born in Norwalk, Ct. My grandfather's brother, GEORGE CLAYTON SANFORD was born 8-30-1886. As a child, I can remember my Grandfather always bringing up the fact that he wondered what ever happened to his brother George. It seems George left the family unit at the age of 24 and was never heard from again. As I started to learn a little about genealogy, I decided to try and found out what ever happened to him. I have come across absolutely no record of him anywhere. Perhaps, he changed his name? My Mom, now 80, still talks and wonders about him. If anyone can give me any information, I would appreciate it so much. Barb McDonald

    3. This George Crittendon Samford was the son of William Amasa Samford and Sarah Evelina (Webb) Samford according to the following obituary. .....Shirley Holmquist Reprinted from The Champion, Center, Texas August 28, 1929 "Crit" SAMFORD DEAD AFTER LONG ILLNESS; FUNERAL HELD SUNDAY G.C. "Uncle Crit" as he was affectionately called had been a member of the Southern Methodist church for nearly 60 years and he left the assurance with his sorrowing family that he had passed from earth to heaven. And we are trusting that by and by we will be an unbroken family in that home beyond the skies, where there will be no more and parting, sorrow or death. He leaves his wife and seven children. 21 grandchildren. 5 great-grandchildren. 6 brothers and one sister to mourn his passing away. but we realize our loss is his gain. Just another one gone on to await our coming. Two children. a son and a daughter had preceded him to that better land. Five of his children were with him in his last hours: Mrs. W.T. Bounds and Jesse Samford of Center, Mrs. W.C. Worsham of Buna, Texas. Eddie and Victor Samford of El Dorado. Ark.. Mrs. J.T. Owens of Overton and Lottie Samford of Crane, Texas were absent. Several of his grandchildren and four of his brothers and his only living sister, Mrs. R.G. January were with him. Funeral services were held at his home. Conducted by Rev. FE. Luker and Rev. C.V. Dunn. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery. Many flowers were placed on his grave by his good friends. There we left his body to return to the dust while his spirit wafted home to that glory land. We feel that God will say to him, Well done thou good and faithful servant enter thou into the joy of thy Lord, His Son. -----Original Message----- From: SSanfordG <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Wednesday, March 25, 1998 5:17 PM Subject: Sanford Mystery #1 >Hi Everyone > >I would appreciate if all answers are sent to list. 3. I am a descendant of Robert and Ann (---) Sanford of Hartford, CT. Robert died in 1676, and was previously thought to have married Ann Adams, though this has been proven wrong. I recently found a website that purports to identify Robert's parents and ancestors (his father supposedly being one Ezekial Sanford of Co. Essex, England), and these include an amazing group of gentry in Cheshire, Shropshire and Essex. I had never before seen any information on Robert's parentage, and am interested in tracking down the source of this information. The website owner said he traced it to an Annie Sanford of Carmel, CA who submitted it to the LDS. I am interested in the sources she relied on in putting together this information. Can anyone else help? Has there been a breakthrough on this line while I wasn't looking? Dave Morehouse [email protected]

    3. John Warner was the father of Rose Warner, mother of Thomas, Andrew, Robert and probably Zachary Sanford, and of Andrew Warner, who came to America with the Sanford brothers. His will, filed on 16 July 1614, not 1585. is printed in Carlton Sanford's book, to wit: "Commissary Court of London, Essex and Herts. (Filed Will.) 16 July, 12 James I. (1614) "In the name of God, Amen. I, John WARNER of Hatfeild Broakoke alias Hatfeild Kings, Co. Essex, yeoman, now sicke in bodie but whole and sound of mynde and memory, &c. "Item. I give and bequeath unto Mary my wief all those my freehould lands, &c., in Hatfeild, she paying Elizabeth WARNER my daughter 10 pounds a yeare for six yeares, and to Thomas, John and Ezechiell three of the sonnes of Ezechiel SANDFORD my sonne in law 3 pounds 6s. 8d. apiece at 21, and to Andrewe WARNER and Edward WARNER my sonnes 50s. apiece yearly. "To Thomas WARNER my grandchild 20 pounds at 21. "To John my sonne one year's rent or profit. "To said wife Mary three load of wheat strawe yearly, &c., to be brought to hir and delivered by Thomas my sonne, &c. "To Rose my daughter the best chest save one, &c. "The resideue to Thomas my sonne, executor. "Xphfer WILKYN and Abraham PURCAS to be my overseers. "his John X WARNER mark. "Witnesses. Ezeakell SANFORD, Christofer WILKIN, Robert HOWE. (no note of probate.)" Don't know his birth date, but after you've corrected the death date, 1568 seems reasonable. Have you asked any of these researchers for documentation? -----Original Message----- From: SSanfordG <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Wednesday, March 25, 1998 5:26 PM Subject: Sanford Mystery #8 >Anyone have any more input on the birthdate of this gentleman???? > > John\Johan /Warner/ >BIRT DATE ABT 1568 >Hatfield, Essex, England >DEAT DATE 16 JUL 1614 >Hatfield, Essex, England > >Researcher: [email protected](Mark and Glorene Winfield Stevens)1568 > >Researcher: [email protected]( W D Sanford)His source says dob was >1568 and that he md Mary Purchase in 1578; if so, then he was 10 > years old at the time!!! 3. Before getting into the Sarah mystery...the Emigrants were Thomas Sanford and his brother Andrew (along with a couple of other siblings). They were two different people. (See Carlton Sanford's book). Sarah's name wasn't wife, she WAS Thomas's wife. Every time I see a last name given for Sarah or Dorothy (if she existed) and ask for documentation, I never get an answer. Be very careful of accepting any wife for Thomas unless they show the evidence. And if you do get it...please post it to the list. I have asked several "researchers" to show me the proof, and they don't answer. -----Original Message----- From: SSanfordG <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Wednesday, March 25, 1998 5:22 PM Subject: Sanford Mystery #5 >Has anyone found anything definate on the followin puzzle? > > Thomas Andrew /Sanford/ The.
