Capt John Sanford (as family legend has it) was commodore of the first fleet of merchant ships into Japan after Perry. He was living on Utah St. in Baltimore in 1890. Thanks, Hilary Westin

    3. The original LDS Ancestral File that seems to have started all this lists 3 children born to John and Mary BEFORE Rose. They are Margery b. 1579, Margaret b. 1583, and Joan b. 1585. I have no idea if this is accurate but, if it is, then the 1578 marriage date would be correct. Does anyone know if the 1568 birth date is correct? Norm

    3. Linda, I am very interested in the book you cited. What year was it published and does it by chance have a Library of Congress number? I'd guess it was published circa 1900-1910 since Tuttle, primarily a printer, seems to have gone out of business or been absorbed by another publisher (possibly Morehouse) after that. Does Ms. Ware's book cover any of Robert's ancestry? If so, it would be another interesting version of it that would be applicable to his brothers as well: Andrew and Thomas (my ancestor.) It might also shed some light on the status of Zachery Sanford who settled in Long Island and who some think may have been one of these brothers, although it is not really provable at this point. I believe the book you have is quite rare and possibly very important. I'd love to see it, of course, but really don't have the nerve to ask to borrow it. There are facsimile reprint publishers who will reproduce old, out of copyright rare books. This is one possible way you can share it at no cost to you (you might even make a buck or two) if you are so inclined. You asked about other Sanford/Sandford books. Are you familiar with "Thomas Sanford the Emigrant" by Carleton E. Sanford: Tuttle, Rutland VT (1911). It is now available as a facsimile reprint. It is a 1600+ pg. classic listing over 15,000 of Thomas Sanford's descendants to about 1900. It also has a preface by genealogist Charles A. Hoppin that is the most reliable source of info on the ancestry of these brothers that I know of. I also has an Appendix containing what the author found of the descendants of Thomas' brothers and other early Sanford settlers. Although the 2 volume set is expensive because of its size, it is available to members of this group at a significant discount for $125. I'd be happy to provide details for any who are interested. For others on the line, if you have a book similar to Linda's that deals with a Sanford/Sandford ancestry back to or near the first ancestor of the line to emigrate to America, I'd love to hear about it. Also any book you may have that covers a collateral line, but covers a Sanford branch through marriage, I'd sure like to know about it. I have compiled a bibliography of about 50 privately- and commercially-published works that cover my branch of the Sanford clan that I'd be happy to expand and share with anyone interested. 2. Hello Sanford cousins, I've been watching the list for a very long time hoping that my Penelope would surface and have just visited one of the great Sanford websites. With such a group of researchers, surely someone knows my Penelope. My Penelope SANFORD was the wife of Haden EDWARDS (Haden born 1716) of Stafford and Prince William Cos., VA. Penelope and Haden Edwards relocated to Bourbon Co. KY where Haden left a will in 1803 naming Penelope and his children, viz: l. John Edwards, US Senator 1792 (m. Susannah WROE); 2. Penelope Edwards (m. William POPE); 3. Benjamin Edwards (m. Margaret BEALL); 4. Sanford Edwards; 5. Nancy Edwards (m. Charles WILLIAMS); 6. Mary Edwards (m. Wm. ASHMORE); 7. Elizabeth Edwards (my line-m. John CHANCELLOR); 8. George Edwards (m. ELizabeth MONROE). I have unsubstantiated material that says Penelope Sanford came, probably with her brother John, from England to VA in 1735. It goes on to say that Penelope and John Sanford were children of Humphrey Sanford of England and grandchildren of Sir Humphrey Sanford. I would love to communicate with other members of this Sanford family and have much to share. Thanks so much. Marilyn [email protected]

    3. Hello Everyone, I must say I have been impressed with the participation in the "Sanford Mysteries". I want to thank each and everyone of you. It did my heart good to see such a spurt in the "old mail list" Hopefully we can continue in this way. I, myself, think the purpose of a mailing list loses something of it's purpose when discussion isn't posted to the list. If one doesn't prefer this volume of mail then the digest is there for those persons. At long last the website is back online. I thought for a while it was lost. I hit the dreaded "delete" key and wiped out the part I was working on at that moment . Thank goodness for backup files. The URL for the site is Http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/4453/ The site has a "brand new look" which I hope you enjoy. As for me...I am, as ever Sandie

    1. RE: Robert Sanford (1615-1676)
    2. Steve
    3. Sandie I'll take a stab at this. I just went through the Appendix to Carleton E. Sanford's "Thomas Sanford the Emigrant" in which he lists data about "other" pioneer Sanfords (other than Thomas) including his brothers who emigrated, plus several others of this surname totally unrelated to Thomas and his brothers. On p.1335 (vol. 2) CES covers Thomas' brother Robert and lists his wife only as Ann. He further notes that James Savage lists her as the daughter of Jeremy Adams, thus she would be Ann Adams. But CES further notes that "recent research" (which would have been c. 1900) by A. D. Hodges Jr. disagrees with Savage. However, nothing CES quotes of Hodges conclusions clarifies who else Robert's wife might have been. I find it hard to go against Savage's conclusions since his work really is the first methodical genealogical info on the first settlers in the Mass Bay Colony and he was working with original source documents. The subject Robert clearly settled in Hartford and, according to CES, died there. I scanned his children's listings and most of them who migrated only went across the Sound to Long Island, which in the beginning was administratively part of the Hartford Colony. None of Robert's children appear to have migrated to Virginia. There are several other possibilities covered in the CES Appendix worth looking at. While he lists no other "pioneer" named Robert San(d)ford, he does list several of other pioneers who had sons named Robert. For example, on p. 1394 pioneer Richard Sanford, and on p. 1398 Nathaniel Sanford, both had sons named Robert. It may be worth mentioning that the Index to CES's book lists ONLY descendants of Thomas. None of the Pioneers (or their descendants) in the Appendix are listed in the book's index. However, the Appendix sections are relatively short and easily scanned if you are looking for a specific name. Another more promising clue I found in the CES Appendix was on p. 1398 under Pioneer Nathaniel Sanford. Under him CES lists a number of "others" who may/may not have been offspring of Nathaniel. Note Vincent Sanford, at the bottom of the page, who "Was Clerk of Lancaster County, Va., in 1652, showing plainly that a Pioneer Sanford or Sanfords had settled there and probably prior to this time. The name [Sanford] often appears in the records of Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, and Westmoreland Counties, and among the best families." CES cites several of these people, then concludes, "There are a great many Sanfords in the Southern States, nearly all of whom sprung from the Virginia Pioneers." This is the best "pointer" to the Southern Sanford's I can recall seeing in CES. [I'm not so sure about his phrase "and probably prior to this time" since, if Vincent was Clerk in 1652, and likely at least 22 years old to hold the job, he would have been born in 1630 or before -- too early to have been anything but an emigrant himself.] I am so focused on the Pilgrim Colony (1620) and the Mass Bay Colony (1630) that I personally have not really looked into other colonization in America that followed. But I am pretty sure that by 1640 many vessels were sailing from England directly to ports other than Boston (New Amsterdam/ New York for example) and most likely other places down the coast. I think I'd establish the history side of this first, then try to find records of the first settlers of the ports/colonies south of New York. I do know that Gov. Winthrop and his company had land grants in Virginia but, through a navigation error, they wound up in Mass Bay. Thus his Virginia Grant was up for grabs and it seems likely there were many who quickly (mid to late 1630s on) headed for the Virginia Grant. I'd bet Vincent Sanford, if not the principal ancestor of the Southern Sanford lines, was at least one of them. Steve Sanford [email protected]

    3. Sandy & Ann I'm pretty sure the John Warner mystery comes from inverted last two digits of his marriage year. He and Mary Purchase were married in 1587 (not 1578) when he was about age 19. Note that their first child, Rose, was born 1588. John's other dates seem OK: b: abt 1568 & d: 1614. I had the marriage date wrong too. I'm not sure if I inverted the digits entering the data, or copied it that way when I found the Warner ancestry in the LDS Ancestral File. According to my notes, the link I used was from John's oldest brother, Thomas Warner, AFN 8J90-Z9. Hope this helps. Steve Sanford [email protected]

    3. Sandy, I haven't checked your Sanford web site in a while, but when I did I sent you a note about my grandparents that were listed, Lula Jackson Conner m. Albert Jesse Weaver. You had her name spelled 'Lulu'. That is incorrect. Also death date for Albert Jesse Weaver (son of George J.H.T. Weaver and Mary Sanford) was Feb 25, 1943, not 1923.
